I could have sworn we already had a Maripol thread on the forum, but we don't.

I do remember posting about her before, but I don't recall which thread.

Some of the fashions and trends Madonna was credited for in the 1980s were created by other people, such as Maripol, while some of them were simply en vogue at the time.

Maripol is the one who came up with the black rubber bracelets all worn at once - not Madonna.

What the following article does not say - but I read this somewhere else - is that just several months or a year or so after Maripol released her jewelry (the stuff she made popular for Madonna), that Madonna switched to her more overt Marilyn-Monroe rip off (on the the True Blue album) thus rendering the warehouses filled with box after box of the rubber bracelets and crucifixes pretty worthless.

And IIRC, Madonna did not forewarn Maripol that she'd be switching her look from Debbie Harry - punk - Marilyn Monroe to straight up 1950s Marilyn Monroe, so Maripol was stuck with boxes of these bracelets and stuff.

This page is dated May 2018, but it sounds as tho the interview itself is from around 1985.

  • By Lynn Geller

A bundle of French energy, Maripol whirled into New York city in 1976, and soon began assisting photographer Jean-Paul Goude. Finding gaps in available accessories, she began designing her own jewelry, which was spotted by Fiorucci shortly thereafter. They not only ordered her earrings, but sent her on a trip around the world to research a line of jewelry. That led to the formation of a Hong Kong manufacturing company.

The original model for her popular rubber bracelets was Grace Jones, in 1977.

“My concepts is really junk jewelry, mass media,” says Maripol. “A rubber bracelet today is like the mood ring of the ‘60s.” But she isn’t bitter about the plastic knock-offs found on every street vendor in Manhattan. “I’m not flattered because the quality is so bad,” she says, “but I’m not worried either. They don’t have any more ideas, and I do.”

In 1982 she formed her new company, Maripolitan P.O.L., and this year signed a licensing deal with Madonna for a line of jewelry. “I believe in mass market, very low prices. I want every kid who loves Madonna to be able to afford something, to feel like they’re buying a little bit of her.” Maripol now has backing for the first time and looks forward to being able to concentrate solely on the creative end of the business. “It’s time for me to move on to a bigger level,” she says, “and not to have to take care of every detail. Now that the production end it being taken care of and my jewelry is in stores, I can focus on new ideas.”

A longtime habituee of New York nightclubs, from the Mudd Club to The Reggae Lounge, Maripol is a natural candidate for innovative rock ‘n’ roll design.

She was the artistic director and executive producer of New York Beat, and her jewelry can be seen in numerous videos, as well as on magazine covers and in advertisements. She would like to get into merchandising with other rock stars and has been approached by several.
“My dream would be to design for David Bowie,” she says. “I’d like to do big pins for him, brooches. He’s the cultural translator of our time, an eternal youth. Sometimes I wonder if he’s even human.”

Madonna's Photographers

I'm fairly certain that this Testino guy took photos of Madonna in the 1990s:

Photographers Mario Testino, Bruce Weber accused of sexual misconduct
  • Jan 2018

More than a dozen models have come forward to accuse top fashion photographers Bruce Weber and Mario Testino of sexual misconduct, The New York Times reports.

Fifteen current and former male models have alleged that Weber sexually exploited them during photo shoots, allegedly pressuring them into unnecessary nudity and sexual acts. Several models claim Weber had them touch themselves and then guided their hands with his own.

Testino is facing similar accusations from 13 male assistants and models, who allege he made sexual advances that included groping and masturbation. Representatives for both photographers have expressed shock at the claims and denied the allegations.

But Anna Wintour, Vogue’s editor in chief and the artistic director at Condé Nast, announced that Condé Nast would be putting its “working relationship with both photographers on hold for the foreseeable future” in light of the claims.

Madonna's Music Used in Weird Places

I think I mentioned on here a few years ago I was at a mall and the mall played some Madonna song over the PA system.

Today, I was watching movie, and a Fruit of the Loom commercial came on - and they were using Madonna's song "Holiday" to advertise it (only it wasn't Madonna singing, they had some other lady singing it).

How about that. Madonna's music being used to sell underwear.

Madonna Flies Economy Class

Posted by flea dip (Admin) at Nov 2 2017, 01:55 PM. 4 comments

I had no idea what other thread to put this in, so here we are.

Well, we're not in 1985 any more. This is 2017 where she's not so famous any more. I doubt she has gaggles of teens (or even 40-somethings) buzzing around her to get autographs. Maybe that factored into her decision.

Madonna proves she's no material girl as she shocks passengers by flying economy to Lisbon

NOT SUCH A MATERIAL GIRL Madonna flies ECONOMY to Lisbon – despite being worth £438 MILLION

Madonna shocks fans by taking an economy class flight from London to Lisbon

SUPERSTAR Madonna stunned holidaymakers after shunning a private jet and opting to fly to Portugal in economy class.

Multimillionaire Madge, 59, was snapped on an TAP Air Portugal flight to Lisbon from London having squeezed herself into one of the cheap seats.
  • Nov 2, 2017

Madonna’s not such a Material Girl anymore – she’s been spotted slumming it with the regulars on an economy flight from London to Lisbon. Madonna, 59, still looked youthful in a snap taken by a fellow passenger , wearing powder pink trainers, ripped jeans and an oversized winter coat. The star took the TAP Air Portugal flight to Libson having reportedly visited her son Rocco Richie in London.

Another of her children, adopted David Banda from Malawi, now trains at a football academy in Lisbon and Madonna has reportedly bought a house near the Portugese capital to support the 12-year-old.

David plays at the Benfica football team academy, and Madge has allegedly bought a house in Sintra, located in the foothills of the Sintra Mountains. And fans on social media are reacting with shock to the news that Madonna flew economy class, seemingly make up free.

Twitter user @MadonnaNation said: ‘Imagine seeing Madonna on your flight’ and captioned the tweet with a shocked face smiley. Another fan said ‘I’d cry’ if Madonna got on their flight, while another impressed fan said: ‘She may be the Queen of Pop, but Madonna opted to shun first class travel in favour of economy on a recent flight…’

Now that the veteran hitmaker has confirmed her move to Lisbon, eagle-eyed fans might want to keep an eye out in airline queues in future.

EXCLUSIVE: Madonna grilled in court over visiting jailed Tupac at Rikers Island after rapper penned a letter telling her 'I would love to speak face-to-face with you' about ending their interracial relationship
  • Oct 2017

Madonna may have visited Tupac Shakur while he was in jail in New York City, according to court documents obtained by DailyMailTV

The rapper had penned a letter to the singer while at Rikers Island in January 1995 and had it delivered to her at her New York City apartment

The then 24-year-old asked Madonna to visit him so he could better explain why he broke up their fledgling relationship because she was white

Madonna, who was then 37, refused to answer if she actually went to visit Shakur while he was locked up in a recent deposition about the sale of the letter

She curtly responded to a lawyer, 'I'm not answering that question,' before adding that her visit was 'not relevant to this letter'

Madonna is trying to stop the auction of the murdered rapper's letter and other personal items, including her 'worn panties' and a hairbrush
    - - - - -
Madonna may have secretly visited Tupac Shakur in jail after the rapper wrote her a letter explaining the reason why he ended their relationship, according to court documents obtained by DailyMailTV.

The handwritten note was penned in 1995 when Shakur was locked up for charges surrounding a sexual assault case and given to Madonna after the two had gone their separate ways.

Shakur, then 24, wrote that he had ended their romance because he felt that dating a white woman could jeopardize his career but pleaded with the then 37-year-old to speak face-to-face with him.

After receiving the letter, Madonna possibly left her New York City apartment to visit Shakur, who was just a few miles uptown at Rikers Island.

The revelation comes as Madonna, 59, has halted the sale of the revealing letter and other items, including her 'personally worn panties', which are up for auction.

In a deposition, Madonna acknowledged that she read and received the letter from Shakur while she was staying at her New York City apartment, according to New York court documents.

But the musician skirted around the question of whether or not she visited the rapper while he was locked up, stating: 'I'm not answering that question.'

When the lawyer pressed further on the visitation matter, she curtly responded: 'It's not relevant to this letter.'

The two-and-a-half paged note was written by Shakur 18 months before he was gunned down and killed in Los Angeles in 1996.

The lengthy letter finished by saying: 'I don't know how you feel about visiting me but if you could find it in your heart I would love to speak face to face with you.

'It's funny but this experience has taught me not to take time for granted.'

Madonna Albums

TeleMusicNews: Madonna's 15 albums ranked from worst to best

The worst one, according to this web page:
  • MDNA

The EDM one. On which Euro house artists like the Benassi Bros help Madonna onto the sweaty electronica bandwagon but – despite peppy contributions from Nikki Minaj and MIA and a reunion with William Orbit – she fails to make an emotional connection. More album filler than dancefloor killer.
And more from that page:
  • 14. American Life (2003)

The political one. For which the Material Girl yanked on a black beret and hoisted her guitar aloft to break the shocking news that fame and money don't make people happy. Though she admits to "feeling super-dooper" while driving her mini cooper, she suspects world peace might, on balance, prove more satisfying in the long run.

    13. Hard Candy (2008)

The Pharrell/Timbaland one. The signature booming bass and brass of her producers dominates so much of this album that, at times, Madonna sounds like a guest at her own party. She saved the world with Justin Timberlake and sang that sex with Guy Ritchie was "metaphysical" though he would soon be "miles away".

    12. Music (2000)

The one with the cowboy hat . "Hey Mr. DJ, put a record on, I want to dance with my baby." commanded Queen Madge, feeling playful again after the serious trance of Ray of Light. Warped on other songs, her vocals were clear and true against the guitar loop of "Don't Tell Me" written by her brother-in-law.

    10. Rebel Heart (2015)

The New One. Hurrah! A return to form as after the trend-chasing sounds of Hard Candy and MDNA Madonna sounds like she cares again – and not about what anybody else is doing either. “I poured a beer into my shoe and got my freak on” she sings. Welcome back Madonna!

Madonna and Portugal

Madonna Moves to Portugal and Reportedly Buys 18th Century Moorish Revival Mansion Near Lisbon
  • by Mark David

    BUYER: Madonna
    LOCATION: Sintra, Portugal
    ASKING PRICE: €7,500,000 ($8,927,470)
SIZE: 16,146 square feet, 4 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms plus guesthouse and caretaker’s cottage

YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Madonna announced over Labor Day weekend, via her selfie-heavy Instagram account, that she’d done packed up, picked up and moved to Portugal where word on the Iberian Peninsula celebrity real estate street is the 59-year-old Material Girl purchased the historic Quinta do Relógio estate in the picturesque hilltop village of Sintra. The asking price for the property was €7,500,000, an amount that converts to $8,927,470 at today’s rates.

About 20 miles outside of Lisbon, the approximately 5.5-acre estate is anchored by a grandiose 18th-century Moorish Revival-style mini-palace of more than 16,000-square-feet designed and built in 1865 by architect by Antonio Manuel da Fonseca.

The colossal, quirky and elaborately embellished four-story residence, with four bedrooms and 7 bathrooms, is not currently habitable but, according to listing details, has had substantial structural work, including the addition of steel supports and shoring up of the 150-year old stone foundations.

It will take a few years and no-doubt many millions of dollars to properly renovate, restore and update the main residence, where in the late 1800s the then future king of Portugal, D. Carlos de Bragança, and his bride, Maria Amélia, spent part of their honeymoon.

However, the still bawdy, brash and gleefully rebellious international pop star can settle into the property right away if she so chooses since the estate additionally includes a secondary residence of around 4,700-square-feet that was extensively and luxuriously refurbished by Portuguese architect Thiago Bradell.

There’s also an approximately 1,110-square-foot caretaker’s cottage. The estate’s gardens were designed in a “romantic style” according to marketing materials with a small lake, several springs and fountains, and lush vegetation that includes rare specimen trees such as centenary oaks, cedars and palms.

Madonna, still churning out high-octane pop ditties and with a net worth estimated by the bean counters at Forbes to be in the impressive vicinity of $580 million, has long made her primary home in New York City.

Insensitive, Thoughtless Madonna

Hey, she did the same thing on her MDNA tour. She had a segment of that tour where she danced around stage with rifles and guns.

When she took her tour to Colorado, they begged her to leave the gun part of the show out, because just a few days before, some nut brought guns into a movie theater showing "Batman" and he shot at people.

Did Madonna, out of respect for that community, cut the gun part of the show? Nope.

Another with the handle vivimodancer added, "What a fine clumsiness madonna (sic). Yes with more than 500 hectares of forest burning still part of the morons (sic). Saint-Tropez can only be on fire."

The post also appeared on her Twitter account, where it also attracted angry comments from users.

Madonna Upsets Colorado Fans Through Gun Use in Concert - Oct 2012

  • Some Colorado fans are upset after music superstar Madonna used guns during a performance in a community that is still raw from a mass shooting at a local theater and a violent summer that includes the unsolved slaying of a 10-year-old girl.

Madonna's second act at her show Thursday night at the Pepsi Center in Denver featured the 54-year-old singer using a fake gun to shoot a masked gunman and images of blood splattering on a large screen behind the stage. She used the set for her performances in other cities for the song "Gang Bang," which includes the lyrics "shot my lover in the head."

"We're dancing and all of a sudden people started realizing what the song was," said concert-goer Aaron Fransua, 25, who was in section 120. "We all just stood there. Everybody who was around me all had shock on their face. I heard a lot of 'wows,'" Fransua said.

Mile High Sports Radio Denver personality Peter Burns, who was in another section, said the people around him began murmuring when the song came on.

"You could see people kinda looking at each other," Burns said. "I heard the word 'Colorado,' you know, 'Aurora,' 'shooting.' You could hear people talking about it and it was little bit unsettling. I saw two or three people get up and grab their stuff and actually leave their seats."

Madonna Exploits 2017 Manchester Terror Attack

Posted by flea dip (Admin) at May 25 2017, 01:41 PM. 2 comments

This story covers so many threads here - it's about her ego, her fans (what's left of them) being upset with her, her misuse of social media... it's hard to know exactly which thread to put this in.

Any time someone dies, she usually does manage to make it all about her. Except some commentary she made at the time of Prince's passing, I think she kept it focused on him rather than herself, which is highly unusual for her.

Don't forget Madonna used another terror attack a few years ago to promote her Rebel Heart album:
Madonna Accused of Using Paris Terrorist Attack to Promote her Album (2015)
  • Jan 2015
Madonna is being accused by many online commentators of using the recent terrorist attack in Paris to promote her album Rebel Heart.

The 56-year-old posted a series of photos to her Instagram to offer support after 12 people were killed in the gun attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo's Paris offices.
But as Madonna offered encouraging words in the captions for her social media images, she also provided some hashtags which were in promotion of her new album.

Many are shocked at her tone-deaf post in the wake the tragic attack

    By Lauren Franklin, Showbiz Reporter

MADONNA has been slammed by fans today for posting a picture of her and Ariana Grande partying.

More than 24 hours after Monday night’s Manchester bombing, Madonna, 58, uploaded a picture to Instagram of her and Ariana, 23, with their arms wrapped around each other and pouting at the camera.

Madonna wrote: “Thank Goodness my friend is O’K. Lets all pray for the innocent victims who are not ok. For their families and for Manchester

However her followers were left reeling at the picture and the words the singer had chosen.

One wrote: “She should NOT use such a tragedy for self-promotion!!! Another picture and words would fit better!!!!”

And many more believed that Madge should have been focussing on the 22 dead, 59 injured, and nine people still missing from the atrocity, before namedropping Ariana.

One fumed: “Being thankful that Ariana is ok should have come at the end of her post, it should have been respect for the dead children that should be foremost in people’s minds not being thankful that ur multi $ celeb friend is safe, very selfish post by @madonna [sic]”

Another called it “narcissistic”, writing: “This post was so damn unnecessary!!! Think more before you post this kind of s***!!! over the top narcissistic….

Another simply said: “Me me me me me me me me me me and me only me.”

One pointed out that she uploaded the controversial picture of her daughter and a “cocaine” cushion before paying tribute to Manchester.

“And it’s only taken you a day to realise? Ariana ok? What about the families? Post your ridiculous cocaine cushion pictures first, that’s your priority!!!!”

And others pointed out that the post echoed Kim Kardashian, with the reality star also posting an Instagram snap of her and Ariana partying that many deemed inappropriate.

“It's as ridiculous as Kim Kardashian posting a picture of her & Ariana partying..??? WTF get a grip people.”

While Madonna may have missed the mark with her post, many other famous faces across the world shared their shock and paid tribute to those who lost their lives.

However, Madge followers were adamant at the way they felt the Material Girl should pay her respects.

“Not the best tribute. Sorry @madonna

'Classic narcissistic Madonna': Singer slammed by fans over 'self-indulgent' Manchester bombing tribute snap with a pouting Ariana Grande

Madonna has been slammed by fans over her 'narcissistic' and 'self-indulgent' tribute to the Manchester Arena bombing victims.

The Like a Virgin star, 58, joined the scores of celebrities who took to social media to pass their condolences to the families of the 22 gig-goers who died after the terrorist attack at Ariana Grande's show.

Alongside a snap of the star posing alongside a pouting Ariana, she wrote: 'Thank Goodness my friend is OK.

'Lets all pray for the innocent victims who are not ok. For their families and for Manchester.'
However, her 'vain' choice of picture has riled her followers, who also claimed the star was 'insensitive for focusing on the singer rather than the innocent gig-goers who lost their lives.

One wrote: 'Being thankful that Ariana is ok should have come at the end of her post, it should have been respect for the dead children that should be foremost in people’s minds not being thankful that ur multi $ celeb friend is safe, very selfish post by @madonna.'
Another fumed: 'This post was so damn unnecessary!!! Think more before you post this kind of s***!!! over the top narcissistic…. '

While one commentor wrote: 'She should NOT use such a tragedy for self-promotion!!! Another picture and words would fit better!!!!'

The backlash comes after Kim Kardashian also came under fire for posting a picture of herself in a tribute to the victims.

Taking to Instagram on Tuesday to share her shock and sympathies, the reality star, 36, shared a well-intentioned throwback snap of herself with sister Kendall Jenner and Ariana, which she accompanied with a touching post.

The mother-of-two wrote: 'I'm praying for everyone in Manchester. This is truly so senseless & heart breaking.

'I can't imagine the fear and agony these parents must be going through searching for their kids.

'Concerts are supposed to be a place where u can let loose and have fun. It's so scary to not feel safe in this world. My heart goes out to @arianagrande I love you.'

Despite her sweet words, several fans were offended by the choice of picture, as they questioned why Kim had included an image of herself in the tribute.

...On Tuesday evening a suicide bomber - now named as Salman Abedi - blew himself up at Manchester Arena during Ariana's Dangerous Woman tour, killing 22 people.

ISIS have claimed responsibility after the terrorist set off a ball bearing bomb at an Ariana Grande concert, killing 22 and injuring 119 in the worst terror attack Britain has seen since the 7/7 London bombings.

Eight-year-old Saffie Roussos, 18-year-old Georgina Callander and 26-year-old John Atkinson were among those killed. Of the injured, at least 12 were children were among 59 taken to hospital, with 60 others treated at the scene.

Ariana was one of the first stars to share her sympathies, posting: 'Broken. from the bottom of my heart, i am so so sorry. i don't have words.'

She has now suspended her Dangerous Woman tour.

Sheryl Crow and Madonna

Posted by flea dip (Admin) at Apr 22 2017, 02:28 PM. One comment

I agree with Crow's comments. It's a shame she feels the need to backtrack when some people began asking her if she meant to be critical of Madonna's behavior in the public, or of Madonna's views.

Maybe Crow was just trying to avoid a media-concocted cat-fight, which I don't entirely blame her for, but I like to see women speak out against the sort of "feminism" so-called that Madonna promotes (the get ahead by shaking your butt in public stuff) that Camille Paglia favors. It's a shame Crow is walking this back.

Did Sheryl Crow Mean to Shade Madonna?
  • April 21, 2017

The Grammy winner set the record straight on her controversial interview on #WWHL.

Many people thought Sheryl Crow was coming for Madonna after she made some comments about women's sexuality and female empowerment in the music industry during an appearance on AXS TV's The Big Interview with Dan Rather earlier this month. But Sheryl set the record straight during a visit to Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen Thursday night.

When Madonna accepted the "Woman of the Year" honor during the Billboard Women in Music 2016 celebration in December, she spoke about how women in the music business "have to play the game" in being what men and what other women are comfortable with them being, but they're not allowed to act too smart, share their own sexual fantasies, or age.

Dan Rather asked Sheryl what she thought about Madonna's remarks in the context of her own career.
"For the women that are out there now, I would always ask the question, 'Do you feel more empowered by using your body to draw attention to your art, or do you feel more empowered by wielding a talent that moves the molecules?'
And to me, I choose the latter because I think that, I mean I wouldn't put it all on Madonna, but there's a certain part of me that says when you start exploring sex as a woman's power and you project that into art as a business form, you change the way women are forever looked at," Sheryl explained.
"I take offense at the fact that so many females out there have an opportunity to be powerful and strong and not have it be relying on the size of their butts or a particular kind of dancing that we've all seen through decades and that being construed as power. It isn't."

Though many people interpreted Sheryl's response to be critical of Madonna, the Grammy winner told one WWHL caller that wasn't her intention at all and her comments were "taken sort of out of context." "Yeah, that was a bummer," Sheryl said. "I did a Dan Rather interview, and he asked me about a quote from Madonna. I actually had not seen her speech."

Sheryl went on to say that she would never do anything to insult the Material Girl. "Of course, I would never pick a fight with Madonna," she continued. "I have a lot of respect for her."
