Some reviews are saying that Rihanna's latest video is really good, and that Madonna's was awful by comparison, that Madonna should take a cue from Rihanna.
Some reviewers are saying it's a controversial video
Edit. I just watched the video and listened to the song. I don't care for either one.
The reviewers seem to be saying she's beating Madonna at what Madonna used to do.
One of the things I've said before is that Madonna using sex to be controversial is very tired, and if she insists upon being controversial, she needs to switch it up (no more sex. Also, the crucifix imagery is equally tired, trying to offend Christians).
Rihanna is primarily using violence here, shots of blood, knives, etc., in her video. There are sexual aspects to her video, but it's not about sex.
The sex thing has been done to death, so Rihanna goes for blood and guts - which is actually something Lady Gaga played around with a little bit a few years back in some of her live TV performances and a video or two.
Rihanna's b***h Better Have My Money video: For and Against the pop flick that's got everyone talking - Rihanna's 'B*tch Better Have My Money' video has taken music fans by storm, with its violence, drug use, gore and nudity combining to create a genuinely shocking film.
Cue the Twitter storm... On one side, fans praising the visually-impressive video for being action-packed and 'cool'. On the other side, those who feels it's crossed a line of decency and is a predictable hash of 'controversy for the sake of it' that disrespects young fans.
Controversy still reigns supreme in the world of the music video, it seems. Twenty-five years on from Madonna's 'Justify My Love', Rihanna's new "explicit" music video (by the title's own teasing admission) is garnering much hysterical backlash with its blood, breasts, blades and bongs (and kidnap and murder and.... well you get the point). How far we've come.
But, reluctantly, I find myself kind of nodding in agreement. While the Tarantino meets Spring Breakers cut is very well made - hey look, it's got Mads Mikkelsen in it! - isn't it also incredibly contrived? A pastiche of provocation that the masses will either hoover up or hate, and either way Rihanna and her record company win from the sales and publicity? B_tch Better Have My Money music video: Rihanna's stoner gangsta fantasy - Taylor Swift begone, this week it's Rihanna who rules the internet. Fresh from being unveiled as America's top digital recording artist, Rihanna's new music video clip is making huge waves. And why wouldn't it?
...They'd have a point. Could black pop culture make a more powerful (and oddly, acceptable) statement than a black woman - arguably the least powerful American, according to several post-Charleston hypotheses - committing extortion and bloody torture against one of America's emblems of success - a beautiful rich white woman? Either way it looks the business.
Every frame is a reminder of how damn cool Rihanna is (Madonna take note, this is how you do it in 2015). Every shot looks worthy of a spread in some so-hip-it-hurts French fashion magazine. Parts of this were also copied to another thread:
Guns'n'poses: Rihanna's BBHMM is the return of the blockbuster music video- Does RiRi’s NSFW video for her new song b***h Better Have My Money signal a new direction for the former ingenue?
by Rebecca Nicholson Thursday 2 July 2015 08.17 EDT
The big pop event-video has been flailing in recent times, though there have been plenty of contenders.
Taylor Swift’s endlessly teased, celebrity-heavy Bad Blood video failed to live up to the extraordinary hype, glossing out any personality or bite and ending up resembling an ad for hair dye.
Madonna brought together the biggest pop stars in the world for her B_tch I’m Madonna clip, but the final result was more French and Saunders spoof than cultural moment.
In fact, the most successful videos have been the less showy, more understated ones: Sia’s use of interpretative dance in Chandelier, Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé eating burgers and having a great time together in Feelin’ Myself, Beyoncé goofing around in hotel rooms for 7/11. Going big in videos was for Lady Gaga in her prime, not the pop stars of 2015. edit. New links added.

Rihanna's "BBHMM" Video Is Not Suitable For Work, Or Feminists- Here's the premise: Rihanna's accountant (Mikkelsen) has stolen her money and jacked up her credit. As revenge, she and her scary squad kidnap his bombshell wife, stripping her down and letting her dangle from her ankles in some grimy warehouse. It's full-on Lethal Weapon.
Mrs. Accountant gets stuffed in a box, hit on the head, submerged underwater, and basically orally assaulted with a bong (is that a punishment?).
The video is slick and her fans are already raving about how entertaining it is, but really? Did we need to see a human Barbie doll get the crap beaten out of her? It's not even a girl fight; Rihanna and her crew are torturing this woman, simply because she married a slimy crook.
So, yeah, needless to say, we won't ever be asking RiRi for a loan. We also won't be re-watching this video. Rihanna Tortures Woman, Strips Naked, and Gets Covered in Blood in NSFW ... - The definitely NSFW video tells the story of Rihanna attempting to extract money from the b***h (who turns out to be her accountant) by kidnapping his wife, putting her in a trunk and then subjecting her to all forms of torture.
As the accountant continues to fritter RiRi's money away on girls and booze, Rihanna and her gangster team of women subject his blonde wife to a number of awful fates, including hanging naked from the ceiling, being pistol whipped, and then nearly drowned in a pool.
At one point Rihanna, her accomplices, and her victim end up in a motel room getting high and drunk, before the 27-year old singer returns to her accountant's home and dons latex gloves while picking out which knife, sword or saw she's going to use to cause carnage in his house.
The shocking end to the story sees Rihanna, stripped totally naked and splattered with a load of blood, lying in the trunk, which is now full of bank notes — one of which carefully covers some of her modesty. Rihanna debuts epic 'B---- Better Have My Money' video WARNING: GRAPHIC ...
