The good old days. When she could actually make people angry, usually right wing people.

These days, she doesn't realize things have changed, and so she ticks off left wing people.

(Right wingers became pretty immune to most of her shtick years ago.)

Ranking PMRC's 'Filthy 15': Madonna, Prince and More Get Dirty
  • Tipper Gore and a group of other (socially) conservative and influential women gathered 30 years ago to organize the PMRC (or Parents Music Research Center) after listening to the travesty that was Prince's "Darling Nikki."

    That organization has become the face of the censorship movement in the United States, ruining good album artwork and antagonizing Eminem, Marilyn Manson, Frank Zappa and others for three decades now.

    When it formed, the group issued a list titled the "Filthy 15," listing tracks that it considered especially repulsive. Music Times is ranking those first 15 songs in terms of potential for wrecking lives, from Madonna to Prince.

    14) "Dress You Up" by Madonna

    Madonna has never been one to dodge controversy, which makes it somewhat surprising that "Dress You Up" was the most spicy part of her catalogue that the PMRC could identify. Yes, we realize that "dress you up in my love" is a reference to sex, but musicians have been making more bawdy remarks for 60 years leading up to that point in history. In terms of innuendos, "Dress You Up" is on the family-friendly side of things.

30 years ago: Madonna at Hofheinz Pavilion

    If you had cable TV back in 1985, and if you were young enough to have baby boomers for parents, you knew who Madonna was. All you had to do was watch just a few minutes of MTV.

    But no matter what you thought of her sensual image or even her music, you couldn't deny the fact that she sold records. By the truckload.

    So it should be no surprise that -- 30 years ago tonight -- a mass of fans clad in lace, fishnets and crucifixes filled Hofheinz Pavilion to see her in person.

    But did she live up to the hype? Here's how the Houston Chronicle's Michael Spies described it:

    "In the movie 'Desperately Seeking Susan,' she at least had a certain sensual arrogance. On stage Saturday at the Hofheinz Pavilion, for a sold-out Houston appearance during her first-ever U.S. tour, she displayed a tempting midriff and sang her hits, but the voice is puny and the material punier.

    "The traces of ego are not appetizing, either. She is already wanting to know if one side of the audience loves her more than the other because she can't go on unless everybody loves her."

    Jerome Weeks of the Houston Post wasn't any more complimentary.

    "She's trained in dance, and she danced Saturday night much better than the usual rock show hops and struts. And there was plenty of lascivious crawling and writhing, especially during 'Everybody' and 'Burning Up.'

    "But Madonna's voice is on the thin side, reedy and cold, despite all the heated panting. The problem with her image is not the dumb sexual easiness implied by her 'Boy Toy' belt that causes many to dismiss her as a bimbo, but quite the opposite: sexual utility. Madonna implies that she enjoys sex, but as in 'Material Girl,' she's also cooly determined to use it to get what she wants.

    "All of which only heightened the concert's feeling of a rather unfeeling, flashy manipulation and of an act that, at best, is still practicing."

    Ah well. So-so reviews like these didn't matter much in the grand scheme of things. Madonna would return in 1987 on the "Who's That Girl" tour. That time, she appeared a few miles away at the Astrodome.

    Both reviewers, though, saved their worst for the opening act, a heretofore unknown white rap group from New York called the Beastie Boys.

...hahaha...pretty accurate so far...she hasn't changed her act much over the years now has she...

...BTW that photo of her at the top of the article serves as a pretty accurate reminder of the Madonna that was...quite a ratty-haired, messy-looking thing...she actually looked like her personal hygiene was suspect...and even though she probably had some plastic surgery by 1985, it's almost shocking to see her original nose and fuller, pre-exercise bulimia face...

I thought she coulda been related to Boy George, they looked so similar.

I understand at the time, total strangers who would go to the same gym as her - or just read this magazine & that - made comments about how fat, ugly & pale she was. Doubtlessly, these remarks made it to her & she really took it personally like Karen Carpenter did.

Ergo, the yuppie workouts & body sculpting.

^ I've noticed that. Wow, I didn't think of it until you just said that. She truly has been body conscious over the years. Now we see why... and she claims she don't care about reviews. Guess she does if she was unsure of her weight due to what they said about it at the time.

She was also painfully thin when she was at UMich in Ann Arbor. But, yeah, she must've had a very insecure undercurrent during 1985, including her wedding to The Love Of Her Life ... ** massive eyeroll **

...'fat, ugly, and pale she was'...Indeed I never understood at the time why the press and her fans were so adamant that she was 'beautiful'...in fact, I heard thru the grapevine that a lot of people who encountered her in person found her to be quite plain, bordering on homely...

...she must have it written in to her contract with S@t@n that she would be perceived as beautiful by gullible stans and media shills...not even S@t@n could bestow real acting or movie-making talent though apparently...

Madonna Threatened With Arrest In Toronto Over 'Like A Virgin' Faux Masturbation: 25 Years On, Was This Her Most Controversial Moment?
  • ... In fact, 25 years ago today, Madonna’s raunchy on-stage behaviour almost landed her in trouble with the law, due to a particularly provocative performance of her hit ‘Like A Virgin’.

    For her Blonde Ambition tour, Madonna revamped the song with an Eastern vibe, performing it on a bed, alongside two male dancers - who were wearing conic bras, of course - while simulating masturbation on stage.

    Unsurprisingly, not everyone was impressed with her not-exactly-family-friendly display, and she was even threatened by the police, before taking to the stage in Toronto, that they were prepared to arrest her if she included the faux masturbation sequence in her routine.

    Of course, being Madonna, she went out and did it anyway... and the police, perhaps wisely, decided not to arrest her.

Madonna before she was Madonna – a dance student at ADF
  • ... It’s the beginning of a Charlotte Observer story from July 1978, about the American Dance Festival’s first year at Duke University in Durham.

    And it might be the first notice from the press that Madonna received.

    Observer staff writer Richard Maschal quoted Madonna, then 19 years old, describing the rigors of ADF as “pretty draining and demanding.”

    And he called her “what the American Dance Festival is about.”

    .... [Maschal commenting on Madonna]: “I also found her one of the most self-absorbed persons I had ever met.”

    That self-absorption also manifested as confidence, which would stand Madonna in good stead as she pursued her career.

    One of her 1978 ADF classmates was Eric Tyrone Smith, who later shared a West Village apartment with Madonna in New York City.

    In a 2007 email, he recounted a salient memory of Madonna’s evolution from dancer to singer:

    She came back to the apartment one day bragging that she had just been out in Washington Sq. park singing with some black guys and that they had told her she could sing. I told her she couldn’t believe everything she was told and of course the rest is history!

    Little else remains of Madonna’s long-ago time as a dance student in Durham. Her primary teachers there, Pearl Lang and Pauline Koner, are both deceased.

    And while ADF still has her application and school records on file, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) means they will remain private unless Madonna herself chooses to release them.

    That’s doubtful, so mostly we have Maschal’s witness-bearing account. He admits he did not come away impressed, with little inkling of just how big a star she would become.

    Maschal’s 1985 story about Madonna concluded by asking about the 26-year-old singer, “Can you picture Madonna at 40?”

  • As Madonna announces her first Australian tour in 23 years, we look back at her last Sydney show, way back in November 1993. And according to Sydney Morning Herald music critic Bruce Elder, it was 'nothing special'.

    Given the hyperbole which had preceded the arrival of Madonna, it was almost certain that her live performance would not equal her incredibly overpowering sales pitch and media profile.

    Thus, the best that could be said about this two-hour performance was that it was an event, an occasion, a place to be seen at, but as pure dance, pop or rock entertainment it was nothing special.

    The rain, which had been threatening to turn the evening into a total disaster, managed to hold off for the duration of the concert.

    The audience of about 45,000 behaved themselves in an exemplary manner and Madonna delivered her Girlie Show, which has now been seen around the world.

    The central question raised by the concert is whether Madonna is really committed to celebrating sexual liberation or whether she has simply hijacked sadomasochism and homosexuality in the name of good old American capitalism.

    The evidence would seem to suggest the latter.

    Although she dedicated In This Life to people with AIDS, offered lots of homo-erotic dance routines and generally seemed to be celebrating sexual liberation, there was a kind of coldness and distance to her whole performance which did little to produce a feeling that she was really committed to the issues in anything other than a mercenary, "what can I get out of this particular scam" kind of way.

    In spite of her reputation for outrage, this was ultimately a rather tame performance.

    At times she dressed like a Berlin cabaret singer, a military officer, a habitue of a sadomasochistic brothel and an elegant Victorian woman.

    She went through her paces, performing an interesting and unusual version of Like A Virgin, which was delivered with a Marlene Dietrich huskiness, while Holiday was performed as a circus band composition.

    In the end, there were too many flat spots (the whole central hour sagged terribly) to make this a truly memorable concert.

    The vast audience seemed to love what they saw but there was a real feeling that they were in love with the idea of being able to say they had seen Madonna.

    There was little evidence, either from on stage or off, that Madonna had offered something special and extraordinary. An entertainment it was, but it never became an inspiring occasion.
