Andrea Peyser recently wrote a good editorial criticizing Madonna's overbearing parenting style; you can read that in this thread
---------------------------------------
David Bowie recently passed away (more information on that here)

Of course Madonna had to jump into this and insert herself into the story.

As board member Mandonna noted on another thread (link)

Hello, nice boardpeople, I'm here to express my disdain over Madonna's Instagramposts regarding David Bowie's death.

All manner of showbizpeople have paid their respect, but our subject just cannot do it without giving each post the hashtag 'rebelheart'. He might have had a rebel heart, but it is the only hashtag, and it comes across as really appropriating, like she makes him a part of her concept of Rebel Heart / Rebel Hearts. Almost every image on her Instagram has the rebel heart hashtag or a variation thereof.

Yes, we know you have a massive ego, Madonna, but you could carry it with decorum XC

Also, spelling. The first post about his death written by her on Instagram looks like he died in a car accident, and she was in the car:
"[madonna] Im Devastated! This great Artist changed my life! First concert i ever saw in Detroit! R.IP. ️#rebelheart"
Well said.

Here are some links from news sources about Madonna's instagramming or tweeting about Bowie lately:

Madonna shared a series of tweets early Monday morning to honor David Bowie hours after his passing. The Material Girl, who accepted Bowie’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 1996, initially wrote that she was “devastated,” adding that her first concert was seeing the iconic British rocker in Detroit.

Madonna then tweeted out a series of superlatives — “Talented. Unique. Game Changer. The Man Who Sold The World” — and declared Bowie’s “spirit lives on forever.” She also posted an old photograph of herself with Bowie with the comment “So lucky to have met you! Hot Tramp I love you so!”

Madonna recounted her experience as a 15-year-old at a Bowie concert when speaking at the Rock Hall induction ceremony. “I don’t think that I breathed for two hours. It was the most amazing show that I’d ever seen, not just because the music was great, but because it was great theater,” she said.
“I came home a changed woman, as you can see, and my father was not sleeping and he knew exactly where I went, and he grounded me for the rest of the summer. But it was worth every minute that I sat and suffered in my house that summer.”

I wonder if she's gonna "pay hommage to him" now and rip off some of his songs on her tour, like she did on Sticky & Unoriginal Tour with Michael Jackson after his death.

They have screen shots on this page of her Tweets:

Madonna is accused of using her Twitter tribute to David Bowie to help promote her latest tour after using her rebelheart hashtag
  • 57-year-old posted series of tweets in tribute to Bowie, who died yesterday

She quoted his lyrics before writing #rebelheart, the name of her latest tour

Some Twitter users criticised her for still trying to promote her own songs

Others also used the same hashtag to pay tribute to the 69-year-old star

Madonna has been accused of using her tribute to David Bowie to promote her latest album.

The 57-year-old singer posted a series of tweets this morning after it emerged the rock star had died following his secret 18-month battle with cancer.

But she was quickly slammed by fans for using the hashtag #rebelheart - the name of her latest tour and album - to finish off her tribute.

Madonna (pictured with David Bowie) has been accused of using her tribute to the singer to promote her latest album. She used the hashtag #rebelheart, which is the name of her latest album and tour, along with lyrics from his song Rebel Rebel

The so-called Queen of Pop, who inducted Bowie into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1996, has been promoting her tour relentlessly on social media, using the hashtag at the end of nearly every post.

She wrote: 'Im Devastated! This great Artist changed my life! First concert i ever saw in Detroit! R.IP. ❤️ #rebelheart.'

Posting a photograph from his younger days, she then wrote: 'Talented . Unique. Genius. Game Changer. The Man who Fell to Earth. Your Spirit Lives on Forever! #rebelheart'

The singer then posted a picture of them together, quoting lyrics from his hit Rebel Rebel, which read:
'So lucky to have met you!!!! Hot Tramp I love you So! #rebelheart.'

But many people took offence to the tributes. One user wrote:
'Did madonna really sign off her tweet for bowie with #rebelheart...'

Another said: '#Madonna is devastated about #bowie's death but has till her mind to add his #rebelheart hashtag on her tweets about it. #fail #gross.'

Another user wrote: 'Leave it to Madonna to try and sell albums off David Bowie's death #rebelheart #flop #retire.'

And one person tweeted: 'Not even Bowie's death will have Madonna shake the "#rebelheart" off her tweets. Queen.'

However, some other users also employed the hashtag to pay tribute to the singer. Bowie wrote the song 'Rebel Rebel' and many used the hashtag to refer to him as the 'original Rebel Heart.'

Yes, she certainly is making it all about her. Is that photo of her with him even real, or another Photoshop fantasy?

Reportedly in 1984/85, she was at a party in NYC that Bowie, Mick Jagger & Yoko Ono also had attended. In a fit of irony & rudeness, she remarked "Oh, there are only old people in the kitchen" about those three.

On IMDb's Beyoncé Knowles message board, people were harassing Gaga for not crying enough in public about Bowie. To them, Gaga is the self serving phony & their usual scapegoat.

You ask me, maybe Gaga didn't need to sniff him enough compared to Mental Madge, or Phony Pharrell, or Kanye Kartrashian. Maybe she's actually crying real tears while Madge cares more about castrating Rocco & Guy.

Or, Lady Gaga cares about him more, and isn't willing to devalue David Bowie by using him as a self-promotional tool. That's what I would tell those people on that board. I'm not for, or against Gaga by the way. I don't have strong feelings about her.

Madonna Pays Tribute to David Bowie With 'Rebel Rebel' Cover: Photos

Madonna Performs 'Rebel Rebel' Tribute to David Bowie: Watch
  • 1/13/2016 by Lars Brandle

Madonna has saluted David Bowie with a performance of his classic song "Rebel Rebel."

“I want to pay tribute to a man who inspired my career," she told the crowd as her Rebel Heart Tour stopped Tuesday at Houston’s Toyota Arena. “If you haven’t heard of David Bowie, look him up motherf---ers.

“He was one of the geniuses in the music industry, one of the greatest singer-songwriters of the 20th century and he changed my life when I went to see him in concert in Detroit. He showed me that it was ok to be different. And he’s the first 'rebel heart' that I laid eyes on.” She then “got the party started” with Bowie’s 1974 standard.

Madonna was on hand to induct her good friend and childhood hero into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. When news reached her of Bowie’s death on Jan. 10, a heartbroken Madonna shared three tweets in quick succession. In one of them, she remarked: “Talented . Unique. Genius. Game Changer. The Man who Fell to Earth. Your Spirit Lives on Forever!”

He WAS a part of her outlaw teen years. She should owe him so much for the rest of her life, since he mastered the art of morphing first & foremost.

David Bowie was probably the major influence in Madonna's life for her entertainment career. This was after seeing him in concert in Detroit in the early 1970's. She is basically a Bowie copycat who happens to be female. The rock song and dance routines with male dancers in bizarre costumes on bizarre stage sets were Bowie's trademarks when Madonna was still in junior high school. She followed her idol closely.

I think she also ripped off Marlene Dietrich and Marilyn Monroe a hell of a lot for a long duration of her career.

She started out stealing Debbie Harry's look, too.

Her fans have the nerve to throw a fit if they think another pop star today might even be copying Madonna, when Madonna based 99% of her shtick, fashions, hair styles, etc, copying off other people.

Sorry, but I'm still not impressed by that performance of Rebel Rebel in Houston the other night. It still smacks of "it's all about me & my tribe/cult". And the stans lie in wait of how else she'll exploit Starman.

Why be boring, indeed.

Whomever wrote this review was not impressed by Madonna's Bowie tribute.

This review says her singing was a little off.

Madonna scored a 6 out of 10, while some other singers on the list scored 8 out of 10 or higher.

Those Bowie tributes rated – from the Brits to Springsteen, Madonna to Iggy
  • Madonna
What did she do? Played Rebel Rebel in Houston on 12 January.

Any link to Bowie? He inspired Madonna’s career, she said during her introduction to the song, “and he changed my life when I went to see him in concert in Detroit, OK? He showed me that it was OK to be different, all right? And he was the first rebel heart that I laid eyes on, OK?” Nice piece of product placement, there.

Any cop? The rendering – right down to the guitar tone – is a pretty much exact version of the original. It was probably amazing if you were there, but on unforgiving pro-shot video, Madonna’s voice is a little quavery. But does it matter? No, not really. Madonna covers Bowie – still an event.

    Marks: 6/10
From the same page, others who scored higher than Madonna:

  • The Brits
What did they do? Lorde, backed by Bowie’s band, performed Life on Mars.

Any link to Bowie? It was his backing band, so you could say that.

Any cop? This was excellent – someone very young, giving every impression of being honoured to be there, singing a great song with verve and charisma, backed by the musicans who knew Bowie the best. It was simple, understated and devastatingly effective, because it was all about the song, not about the performer.

    Marks: 10/10
    ---------------------
    Bruce Springsteen
What did he do? Played Rebel Rebel with the E Street Band in Pittsburgh on 16 January.

Any link to Bowie? Bowie was a Springsteen fan early on, and recorded both Growin’ Up and It’s Hard to Be a Saint in the City. Introducing Rebel Rebel, Springsteen said: “Not enough people know it, but he recorded our music way, way, way back in the very beginning, 1973.

He rang me up and I visited him down in Philly while he was making the Young Americans record. He covered some of my music and he was a big supporter of ours. I took the Greyhound bus down to Philadelphia, that’s how early on it was. Anyway, we’re thinking of him.”

Any cop? The gruff, manly, very American Springsteen and the effete, metrosexual, very English Bowie don’t have much in common on the surface, but beneath there’s plenty – a shared joy in pop music, and a keen appreciation of each other.

Rebel Rebel, an out-and-out rocker, is pretty much the perfect Bowie song for Springsteen to cover, and the E Street Band are used to covering anything and everything – the organ here changes the song subtly, emphasising that it’s an R&B rave-up at heart.

I can’t help wondering how great it would have been if they’d done Suffragette City, though – imagine Springsteen delivering the “Wham, bam, thank you mam!” line.

    Marks: 8/10
    -------------
    Iggy Pop

What did he do? Performed The Jean Genie and Tonight at the Tibet House benefit in New York on 22 February.

Any link to Bowie? Where do you want to start? Bowie produced Raw Power, the last Stooges album; the pair hung around LA and Berlin together in the 1970s; Bowie worked with Iggy on The Idiot and Lust for Life, and covered China Girl on his own Let’s Dance album.

Any cop? The only footage that has emerged has been filmed from the crowd – and this august concert hall, with a harp centre stage, looks like an odd venue.

But Iggy, backed by the Patti Smith Group, is pretty much the essence of what you want a Bowie tribute to be. The brief clip of The Jean Genie is a wish-you-were-there moment, and full marks to Iggy for following it with something less obvious in Tonight (which he co-wrote).
With added harp. Full marks, too, for doing a version that sounds not one bit like the Bowie take, which was not one of his greatest moments.

    Marks: 9/10
    ---------------------
    Rick Wakeman
What did he do? Performed Life on Mars on BBC Radio 2 on 11 January, and on ITV’s This Morning on 23 February.

Any link to Bowie? He played piano on the original Life on Mars. If anyone has the right to play it at the piano, he does. Wakeman says Life on Mars was “the best song I had ever had the privilege to work on”.

Any cop? Yes. It’s beautiful. For all his King Arthur on ice, and his capes, and his eating-a-curry-during-the-Yes-guitar-solos, Wakeman doesn’t half know his way around a keyboard. This is a wonderful performance, and a reminder that Bowie recognised talent wherever it was to be found, not just among the people publicly anointed as cool.

    Marks: 9/10
    ----------------
    Shooter Jennings feat Marilyn Manson

    Marks: 8/10
That page rated Lady Gaga and a few others (like the Red Hot Chili Peppers) as a 4 out of 10.
