I decided it was time that this topic gets its own thread.
For previous discussions about her SB show, please see the "Upcoming Projects" thread, it's also filled with links to articles about how nobody wanted her to appear at the SB
Is Madonna the Worst Choice Ever for a Super Bowl Halftime Show?- Social Sentiment About the Material Girl's Imminent Performance: Negative!
By: Simon Dumenco Published: February 03, 2012
Madonna is on the cover of the New York Post today for having done a Victor Cruz-style salsa victory dance at a press conference yesterday. You'll be forgiven if you suspect that the Material Girl was merely engaging in a last-minute attempt to associate herself somehow with something football-ish as her Super Bowl halftime show approaches.
Madonna said that in addition to intense rehearsals, she'd be relying on "the support of the universe and the grace of God" to pull off her performance.
The support of the universe? I guess the universe doesn't include football fans, who have been grumbling in social media about Madonna since the announcement of her halftime gig was first made in December.
And it didn't help Madonna's cause that there was also a good bit of grumbling about her appearance on the Golden Globes telecast last month. She may have sold hundreds of millions of records, but a lot of very vocal people seem to be very sick of Madonna.
Ad Age has been working with Networked Insights, a social-media analytics company that advises brands and agencies on media planning, to track social sentiment surrounding Madonna.
Click Here to View Image: Madonna Has Hits But Fumbles With SB Fans
Some notes and context:
Networked Insights tracks sentiment across the social web, including Twitter and Facebook, but also in forums and blog posts.
Over the past couple of months, the No. 1 recurring theme (at 45% of volume) in social-media commentary about Madonna's upcoming Super Bowl halftime show is that she was a lousy choice (on the part of NFL and its broadcast partner NBC, although the culprits are seldom called out by name). Some 15% of comments dis Madonna's appearance, and 12% make fun of her fake-sounding British accent.
By the way, the percentages in our chart don't add up to 100% not only because they don't comprehensively cover all conversational themes but also because there's often overlap between sentiments -- for example, tweets that dis both Madonna's looks and her selection for the gig, like this one from @RoxyCavendish: "Madonna. Not feeling it. She's old. She's looking like a skeleton. With a wig. #notthrilled #halftime #superbowl."
"Anyone who has bought advertising during the halftime show should be concerned from a media-planning perspective," Dan Neely, CEO of Networked Insights, told me. Not only are there plenty of counterprogramming options available on TV (including, of course, the kitty halftime show during Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl), but tons of Super Bowl viewers will surely be turning to second-screen experiences -- choosing media on their mobiles* over Madonna.
Networked Insights also tracked recurring themes in social-media conversations about Madonna's appearance at the Golden Globes last month.
The most common discussion had to do with her feud with fellow nominee Elton John (a one-sided feud, granted, that was started by sore loser Sir Elton and his equally ungracious partner David Furnish), with comments acknowledging her Best Original Song win coming in second and disses of, yep, her weird-sounding faux British-y accent coming in third.
Have Madonna and her people been monitoring her negative social-media buzz? From the sounds of yesterday's press conference, I'd say yes. If you watch the brief excerpt video on the New York Post's website, you'll find that not only has Madonna suddenly scrubbed the annoying British accent from her voice, but she made a point of emphasizing her American-ness: "This is a Midwesterner girl's dream to be performing at the Super Bowl halftime," she declared in a flat Midwestern accent. (Oh, right -- she's from Bay City, Michigan, not York, England. Almost forgot!)
Have the NFL and NBC been monitoring the negative social buzz surrounding their halftime choice? I'd say yes, judging by the fact that, as The Guardian reports, "Both Nicki Minaj and MIA announced they would perform alongside the 53-year-old Material Girl on Sunday, cannily bridging any generation gap between headliner and target demographic." (Minaj and MIA guest on Madonna's new single, "Gimme All Your Luvin'," out today.)
Who would Super Bowl fans rather see than Madonna? From its blog and forum monitoring (three sample comments appear in our infographic above), Networked Insights saw a lot of love for the stadium-rocking Foo Fighters.[/size]

Six Reasons You Should Watch the Puppy Bowl Instead of the Super Bowl- 4. The half-time show.
This year Madonna will be performing during the Super Bowl half-time show. Do you know what’s more entertaining than Madonna? At this point, almost everything but kittens in particular. Puppy Bowl’s half-time show is a bunch of kittens standing on a play structure, looking sort of terrified but also very adorable.

Flea's personal review of Madonna's Half Time show
I might watch Madonna's half time show. They're on a commercial break right now.
I'm also thawing out some stuff for dinner.
If I get side tracked with dinner, I might miss all or part of the half time show.
Okay, they're about to start, so I might as well stay put.
She's starting off with Vogue.
She's dressed in some kind of Egyptian themed outfit, but most of her back up dancers and other guys are dressed as ancient Romans.
The sword sound effect in the song - rip off of Robert Palmer's song Simply Irresistible.
She's singing (lip synching?) "Music" with back up dancers in white track suits
One guy is on a tight rope - whatever that's about.
Now there are people with pom poms. She's singing her new song.
A few of the back up dancer gals appear to have a hybrid outfit going on that doesn't make sense - part cheerleader, part ancient Roman.
There's a marching band on stage, now she's singing Open Your Heart, and Like A Prayer.
I hope she doesn't sing this one off key. (I saw her sing it live once, and she could NOT hit the notes, it was broadcast on MTV. But if this is lip synced, it might not be a problem.)
It's over.
The end was a bit strange in my opinion (she vanished in a burst of light, and the phrase "World Peace" appeared on the stage).
She kept it clean, so I'll give her credit for that.
I wasn't blown away by it, but it wasn't horrible. Parts of it were entertaining.
Now I have to go check on my dinner.
Edit. We now have 161 visitors on our board. I wonder why we've gotten so many people here this evening all at once, unless it has something to do with her Super Bowl appearance?

Not only is it because of her Superbowl appearance, it's partly because she has a new album, song, video, and movie out. We wanna see if any of it is laughable! And some of it is: The GMAYL video, the W.E. movie are hilarious! LOL.

I did not watch it, I was out doing historical research out here for the museum. Much more interesting. I saw a few pics and read about it. Flip Da Bird? Even though it wasn't her...yawn. A band called LMFAO? Oh, how clever. I read about Roman outfits with pompoms, and a tightrope walker? One report said she almost fell once. I luv how she NOW is proud to be a Midwesterner, even though she trashes the Midwest all the time. Oh, wait, wasn't this game played in the Midwest? Now I get it. Anyone else think "World Peace" at the end is retarded? Forget that the saying is meaningless in a world where terrorism is rampant and the Occupy idiots are burning buildings, but "World Peace" at a football game, where guys beat the hell out of each other?

This page has video of the performance: Watch Madonna's Full Super Bowl Halftime Performance- As a solo performance, the show was pretty much just OK-- Madonna can clearly still move even after 50 years on this earth, but she was also obviously lip-synching, something you can't really help at a massive production like this but also taking away from the live performance aspect.
But it's hard to know what tops this in terms of sheer spectacle.
You've got the perfect backup dancers, you've got the stadium full of lights backing her up, you've got the dude flying up and down on the tightrope… and then you've got the truly magical effect that somehow turned the field into a giant projection screen, turning it into Vogue covers and speakers and anything else they wanted.
Watching it on TV, with some truly well-chosen camera angles, it looked like she was performing on an actual stage, or in outer space somehow. I've really never seen anything like it.
Sure, it was a little awkward when the dopey-looking LMFAO turned up onstage, and "Gimme All Your Luvin" has got to be among Madonna's worst songs, and MIA looked unforgivably bored out there-- apparently if you look closely, you can even see her flipping the bird to the camera.
But it's amazing to see this kind of stagecraft during a Super Bowl performance, and even if you don't care about Madonna at all, you've got to admit you're dying to know how they put that together. Feel free to float your own theories, or let us know what you thought of the performance in general, in the comments below. - Lady Chadwick
-
I saw a few pics and read about it. Flip Da Bird? I did pay attention to about 85 - 90% of her half time show, and I did not see her flip the bird. It's possible she did during the few moments I looked away from the set, but I didn't see her do that.
- Lady Chadwick

One report said she almost fell once. I luv how she NOW is proud to be a Midwesterner, even though she trashes the Midwest all the time Yes, she fumbled (sorry for the pun) 2 or 3 times on stage, and I noticed at other points, her movement was not nimble - she had a lot of help from back-up dancer guys who held her leg up, helped her with other moves, etc.
See the link from AdAge (it's in this thread above; see the link: "Is Madonna the Worst Choice Ever for a Super Bowl Halftime Show?") for an explanation on why she is doing that.
She is acting proud to be an American/ Mid Western because her people found out she is disliked for not being American enough so they told her to drop the fakey Brit accent and play up her American roots. It's calculated.
The LMFAO guys were on stage with her for only a few seconds. They sang, "I'm sexy and I know it" twice (that is, the sentence, not the whole song by the same name), she sang the line once, and they were gone.

Anyone else think "World Peace" at the end is retarded? Forget that the saying is meaningless in a world where terrorism is rampant and the Occupy idiots are burning buildings, but "World Peace" at a football game, where guys beat the hell out of each other? It made me think of John Lennon for some reason. How reductive of her.
Madonna fails to ignite Super Bowl halftime sparks - Newsday review- Originally published: February 5, 2012 9:19 PM

In the run-up to her Super Bowl Halftime Show, Madonna talked of being uncharacteristically nervous about her performance.
After seeing it, that makes sense. Her 12-minute extravaganza felt uncharacteristically tentative for a superstar known for breaking down barriers to get her way.
Oh, sure, it was a spectacle. There were gladiators pulling her onto the field on a massive gold throne for "Vogue." There were cheerleaders galore -- including Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., who each rapped half a verse -- for Madonna's new single "Give Me All Your Luvin'." And there was a huge choir, as well as Cee Lo Green, to help her deliver "Like a Prayer."
PHOTOS: Click here to see highights from Madonna's Super Bowl halftime show | Madonna's looks through the years
It was all sufficiently big and flashy and entertaining. It just lacked the element of surprise that we've come to expect from Madonna. It also lacked any sort of emotional connection. (Sorry, ending the show with a hologram of "World Peace" doesn't really count.)
Ever since the notorious Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfunction," NFL officials have sought out halftime acts that were more family friendly. In trying to fit into that role, it seems Madonna lopped off some of the best bits of her performances. The only whiff of controversy came from M.I.A., who punctuated her rap in "Give Me All Your Luvin' " by flipping off the camera for a split second.
Far more upsetting was the way Madonna shoehorned LMFAO into her set, having them do snippets of "Party Rock Anthem" and "Sexy and I Know It" while she pranced around them. The Material Girl-era Madonna wouldn't dream of sharing the stage that way.
Another problem was Cee Lo Green's attempt to deliver the gospel howl of "Like a Prayer," which fell a bit short of the original.
Pulling off a great Super Bowl halftime show is a tall order, though her '80s superstar contemporaries Prince and Bruce Springsteen managed it in recent years. Madonna succeeded in building a massive display, but it felt a bit hollow. It's not a good sign that Clint Eastwood's Chrysler commercial packed more of an emotional punch. Madonna upstaged by MIA's middle finger- For all the pomp and excess of Madonna's Super Bowl halftime show, it is likely to be a single extended middle finger by guest singer M.I.A. that is most remembered.
The gesture, accompanied by a barely disguised expletive, came during a performance of Madonna's new single, "Give Me All Your Luvin.'" It was reminiscent of Janet Jackson's infamous "wardrobe malfunction" -- a surprise risque moment in front of tens of millions of unsuspecting viewers.
The brief exposure of Jackson's nipple during the 2004 halftime show raised a storm of controversy and put CBS in hot water with the Federal Communications Commission.
The Super Bowl, shown on NBC this year, is routinely viewed by more than 100 million people, the biggest TV event of the year.
The screen briefly went blurred after the M.I.A. gesture in what seemed like a late attempt to cut out the camera shot. The NFL, which produces the annual halftime show, had no immediate comment.
Madonna positioned herself as the queen of a new generation of pop stars at the Super Bowl halftime show - complete with throne. Guests Cee Lo and dance rockers LMFAO also appeared.
Madonna seemed like Roman royalty when muscle-bound men carried her extravagant throne across the football field to the stage for her opening song, "Vogue."
The singing and dancing on that song was smartly choreographed, as Madonna moved more deliberately but still adroitly in moves that took into account that she's now in her 50s. She briefly appeared to stumble at one point while trying to make a step on the stage set, but recovered in time.
She let a tightrope walker make the more acrobatic moves during a performance of "Music."
Madonna carried gold pompons for a performance of her new single. Twitter was alight with questions about the vocals being lip synched or augmented by tapes, particularly during this song.
At the end of her lines, M.I.A. appeared to sing "I don't give a (expletive)," although it was hard to hear clearly.
The best guest was clearly Cee Lo, who joined Madonna for the final song, "Like a Prayer." They were joined by a robed chorus in the show's most soaring performance.
With a puff of white smoke, Madonna disappeared down a trap door in the stage, and lights on the field spelled out "World Peace."
The veteran star's vocals were not strong throughout, lending to the sense of distance during the spectacle.
Earlier, Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert offered some pregame patriotism. Shelton and Lambert did a twangy duet on "America the Beautiful" and Clarkson, in a simple black dress, sang "The Star Spangled Banner." Tell us: Did you like Madonna's halftime show? - USA Today

...hafta say...as much as I dislike her...I did not hate the half-time show this year...
...there was enough spectacle of varying forms and degrees to keep me watching for the entire 12 minutes or so...and even though she was of course lip-synching almost every word, she clearly was going for broad appeal by choosing the 2 or 3 songs of hers that I actually don't mind, so I was happy she wisely chose not to attempt to sing them live....
...all in all, it was a very technical and high-tech performance that seemed to work for that venue...then again, the only thing I have to compare it with is last year's horrifying sound-man-gonna-die-for-this-y'all craptaculance of the Black Eyed Peas...:)

Unfortunately, whoever wrote this thinks Madonna is great, but he or she still pans her performance - his biggest complaint is that her guest stars on the stage were a distraction, she should have performed solo:
Madonna races through Super Bowl halftime set busy with stars
Excerpt:- By Tris McCall/The Star-Ledger
This unwelcome intrusion was, mercifully, over quick. It was still a waste of precious time that could have been better used by keeping the spotlight on Madonna, a pop star who has never need any help from her peers to get attention from audiences.
Super Bowl halftime shows are generally a sprint -- musicians attempt to cram as much flash and gratuitous spectacle into the allotted twelve minutes as possible, and are forced to perform attenuated versions of greatest hits.
Madonna succumbed to the conventional pace of halftime (which is something like the relentless pace of football itself), racing through clipped versions of “Vogue,” “Music,” the new single, “Like a Prayer,” as the stage around her flashed like a Jumbotron on the fritz.
By the time Cee-Lo was onstage, the performance had deteriorated into a frantic audition of hooks from ‘80s hits -- “Open Your Heart” and “Express Yourself” both received this desultory treatment.
Madonna has a new movie in theaters and an album coming out next month. She has never walked away from an opportunity to market her projects, and the opportunity to do a halftime show must have been irresistible to her.
But a stage and set like the one she presented in Indianapolis undermines the very real force of her artistry and her message. Madonna is the pop star who stands alone. She doesn’t need assistance from good guest performers, let alone mediocre ones like M.I.A. who seemed hell-bent on causing a distraction.

Since when? She can't chart without featured YOUNGER artists since the late 90s outside of places like Poland and Slovakia. The author misses the facts none of those people are peers but half her age or much younger.

Madonna’s Super Bowl Halftime Show Draws Mixed Reviews- “When did Madonna forget how to dance?” tweeted Craig Carton, Boomer’s morning show co-host. “Oh thats right last time she had a hit.”
...The veteran star’s vocals were not strong throughout, lending to the sense of distance during the spectacle. This was cross posted to the Has Been thread:
Madonna sells, sells, sells at Super Bowl halftime- This was Madonna’s party and besides breaking off bits of her greatest hits to remind people of a time when she was the biggest pop vixen on the planet, she had important career-advancing work to do.
“Give Me All Youre Luvin’,“ the new song inserted into the set list, had a – surprise! – football theme, a techno take on Toni Basil’s 1980s cheerleader anthem, “Mickey.” The song was glutted with cameos by Minaj and M.I.A., who dutifully moved their lips along with the backing track being piped through the stadium speakers in Indianapolis. M.I.A. did manage to insert herself into the post-halftime chatter, however, by flipping a left-handed, one-finger salute.
Twenty years ago, one might’ve expected such rudeness from Madonna herself, but in a pregame interview she vowed no “wardrobe malfunctions” to match the Super Bowl scandal pinned on Janet Jackson a few years ago.
Madonna has never really been about “live” performance; her concerts are essentially theatrical exhibitions accompanied by piped in music (Jeff Lanahan, a microphone technician who worked the halftime, said the vocals were performed live over recorded music). This performance was no different. But the song fell flat for other reasons – it just isn’t arresting in the way prime Madonna could be. Rhyming “Ya wanna” with “Madonna,” recasting herself as a cheerleader for a sport that she’s barely noticed in decades past – it was the Material Girl who couldn’t deliver the goods. Pop music review: Madonna at the Super Bowl- We saw Madonna looking absolutely silly as a 53-year-old cheerleader with equally noncheerleaders M.I.A. and rapper Minaj, and, perhaps most improbable of all, Madonna in front of a church choir pretending to be chaste.

Madonna's Half-Time Show Gets Mixed Reviews- Piers Morgan was quite possibly the harshest in his reaction to Sharon Osbourne's review. "Queen of what? Lip-synching?," he tweeted after Mrs. O proclaimed, "Madonna is back! She's the queen. Just sensational!"

It was okay. But it was weak sauce compared to Michael Jackson's historical 1993 halftime performance.

I think Madge's overexposure circa 1985 to 1992 scared people away from her. And they never recovered from the 80s and early 90s overexposure! Also, she's 53, so she needs to start acting like it and not parading around like she's 19 years old!

Madonna's Super Bowl halftime show was a stiff spectacle- By Keith Spera, The Times-Picayune
I have never performed in front of a television audience in excess of 100 million, and likely never will. I imagine it is intimidating, even for an entertainer who has occupied the world’s largest stages for the better part of three decades. And Madonna, at times, seemed intimidated. She was certainly stiff in the early going.
...She perhaps plotted too ambitious a course. Choreographed dancing in high-heeled, thigh-high boots on bleachers is no easy task. Still, her steps, by the standards of such next-generation stars as Beyonce, were unremarkable. She stumbled at least once. Is Madonna a vampire or a cannibal?- Whether playing undead Cleopatra or eating up young talent, it was all about her
By Susan G. Cole
Being around Madonna can be dangerous to your health.
We were in the same room during her Ray Of Light tour and it was a scary experience. She completely sucked the energy out of the place, so much so that being in her orbit was a completely debilitating experience.
She still has that vampire-like quality – and showed it again as she sucked the life’s blood out of two brilliant younger artists during her halftime show at Super Bowl XLIX. Give her credit for choosing cool talent to perform with. Too bad genius Nicki Minaj and red hot MIA didn’t do much during a performance of Madonna’s latest release, Give Me All Your Luvin’.
Doubtless, Minaj and MIA couldn’t resist the chance to perform in front of billions of eyeballs, especially as they appear in the new video as well. But there is a supreme irony in the fact that these two radical, sometimes challenging artists had to sacrifice themselves to the Material Girl’s personal vision – although MIA apparently gave the camera the middle finger at one point.
And on a new song that’s all about Madonna. I mean, “Madonna” is the central lyric in the chorus, for god’s sake. Both guests artists performed on their own for maybe eight bars each. Even Britney Spears got more out of her brief Madge moment.
Super Bowl half-time shows are always larger than life, and there’s nothing bigger than Madonna’s ego. Only she would make a tribute to the late Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra look like an exercise in self-aggrandizement.
It would have been fine, maybe even fun, had Madonna done something other than jump around for most of her 12-minute performance. Visuals by Cirque de Soleil collaborating technical team Moment came across as muddled and confusing – at least on TV – during a performance of Vogue. Madonna added nothing as she leapt about in one spot looking like a nine year-old.
The only artist able to stand up to Madonna’s cannibalistic/vampiric dynamic was Cee Lo. But then again he got to perform on Like A Prayer, one of the great pop songs of all time. To paraphrase one tweeter, all that was missing on that one was Tim Tebow. Hell, that's never going to happen: Madonna really does not like to be upstaged.

I haven't watched it yet (although the Roman style reminded me of the Greek myth style Kylie used in her latest tour...sorry for harping on the Kylie/Madonna comparisons), but I think the reason she might have danced stiffly is because she recently injured either her leg or knee...can't remember which.
I am surprised she didn't take the opportunity to be controversial. I am glad she didn't. It's funny how it ended up being the much lesser-known M.I.A. who brought the controversy (even if it was something as juvenile as throwing up the middle finger - Madonna herself has already done that tons of times).
Anyway, it's interesting how the board got over 100 visitors...it's a shame nobody signed up to discuss it (although for all we know it was probably a bunch of her ridiculous fans scoping out the "opposition").
Check this out - apparently, Madonna's Superbowl costume looked a lot like a costume GaGa wore at one of her performances.

I was a lot more charitable in my review of Grandma-donna's SB show than the folks at D Listed were:
BREAKING: Madge Keeps Her Crotch Covered And M.I.A. Tells Us To Eff Off- Madge must have been slathered in a fresh coat of melted doll skin before she was carried out on the field, because she looked exactly like a retired Team America puppet. b***h kind of danced like one too. And you should remember this show, because in about 20 years Lady CaCa will be doing a low-budget version when she performs at the halftime show for Queensborough Community College's touch football championship.

Thank you for this link, Madonna's 2012 outfit looks very similiar to a 2010 Lady Gaga tour outfit
I pasted copies of it in other threads.
In the "Rips Off" thread, I also pasted in a story about how Madonna did not come up with the ideas for her SB performance. They said it was thought up by concert director Jamie King.
The media are still going on about that girl over shadowing Madonna. There are a few more headlines like this now:

Link to short article by a reporter who was at the pre-game press conference. The Queen of Poop didn't seem too interesting did she? Plus I noticed that one of the songs played during the Sit And Wait For Madonna period was "Like a Virgin." The song she was thrilled she'd never have to sing again?!

"Queen of Poop?" Was that intentional or a typeo?
I read the page.
Re:- 1:40 p.m.: The ballroom is three-quarters filled and two women over my left shoulder can't contain their excitement.
"I can't wait to see Madonna!" shrieks one, and then turns to the other and says, "Do your Madonna face!"
What's a "Madonna face," you might ask? Good question. I pretended to stretch, turning 180 degrees toward the woman, but she was still turned away. Her friend was nodding and the nod said it was a Madonna face. Maybe it looked like this:

or this:

or this:

Re:- 2:13 p.m.: When asked about her approach to success, she says, "I approach my shows like a game," and then goes on to attribute more to "the grace of God and as many guardian angels as you can attract."
I seriously know one or two Maodnna haters who would attribute her success to Satan. I would attribute it to stuff like giving sex for favors, ripping off other celebrities, tenacity.
Re:- 2:14 p.m.: She thanks the NFL for giving her "all of the things I've been asking for [for the performance], and it's quite a long list."
That's interesting because I saw an article last night that said Madonna asked for dancers to be lowered from the ceiling but the NFL said no way.
Re:- 2:19 p.m.: A Japanese reporter asks Madonna what she thinks about the word "toose," which means "fired up" in Japanese, and then asks her to point into the camera and say the word "toose!" She does. Everyone laughs. It's like we're all involved in one, big, inside joke.
wth?
Re:- 2:23 p.m.: "That was SO fun!" says a man a few rows behind me, appearing to be speaking to no one in particular. Huh, I guess it was kind of fun.
"Fun"? You met her in person, you might want to get treated for cooties now.

...speaking of dark and unholy forces at work, here's a fascinating analysis of the symbolism in the SB half-time show...
