Madonna Over Emphasizes New Material on Live Recording - "MDNA WORLD TOUR," Madonna (Interscope)
An ambitious woman like Madonna will not let herself become a nostalgia act.
She makes that clear every time she goes on tour: She's living in the moment, and she's all about her newest material. But as her career expands, her fan base ages and her biggest hits become increasingly distant in time, Madonna has to adjust her shows like any other veteran act. She has to balance what she wants to play with what fans want to hear.
Madonna proves to be too overly attached to her more recent songs on her new "MDNA World Tour," available on a two-disc audio set as well as DVD and Blu-ray.
To be fair, she should be proud that 30 years after becoming a star, she's coming up with new material like the playful "Girl Gone Wild" and the anthem-ish "I'm a Sinner," which invigorates late in the concert (recorded in Miami). Plus her breathless, raw delivery of the infectious "Turn up the Radio," accompanied by the crowd's singing and clapping, creates the show's most genuine-feeling moment.
Yet plodding through overlong arrangements of inconsequential songs -- from the annoyingly vocoder-treated "Revolver" early to the throwaway dance cut "Celebration" at the end -- will leave listeners wondering why so many substantial hits were given only a nod, if anything at all. It doesn't help that her dark-cabaret treatment of "Like a Virgin" is tedious or that "Vogue" sounds simply worn out. Plus she sounds disappointingly perfunctory on "Hung Up," her best hit this century.
Madonna is a smart performer, however, so this collection is also regularly peppered with imaginative and strong performances. For instance, she bulldozes through a riveting "Express Yourself," throwing in a snippet of Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" (a wink to those who say Gaga essentially remade the Madonna song for herself). And she also gets the crowd fully invested in the energetic signature hit "Like a Prayer."
Best of all, the singer has an uncharacteristic, seemingly humble, monologue midway, where she notes, "Three decades is a long time to have a job, in this day and age when most people don't have jobs. Believe me, I know how lucky I am." After that? She goads a fan to strip off a shirt: "Take it off, let everybody love your body!"
That's our girl.

Chart Moves: Album Sales Hit New Low; Madonna's 'MDNA World Tour' Debuts; Earth, Wind & Fire Reaches Chart High - -- Madonna, "MDNA World Tour" (No. 90): The album version of Madonna's "MDNA World Tour" concert video release debuts at No. 90 with 4,000 sold. It was issued only as a digital album and a CD-R on demand from Amazon.com. It is her 26th chart entry on the Billboard 200.
Meanwhile, on the Music Video Sales chart, the blu-ray and DVD version of the "MDNA World Tour" release combine to sell 11,000 for a No. 1 debut. It's her 10th No. 1 and sixth chart-topper in a row.
Her last live album and video release, 2010's "Sticky & Sweet Tour," was released on blu-ray, CD/DVD and as a digital album. The former configuration enabled its No. 1 debut on Music Video Sales with 5,000, while the latter two combined for a No. 10 arrival on the Billboard 200 (28,000).
Had "MDNA World Tour" been issued on traditional CD and CD/DVD (and/or CD/blu-ray combo), then the album would have naturally charted much higher than No. 90 on the Billboard 200.

Madonna's 'MDNA Tour' Blu-ray recalled in the U.S.
Interscope To Recall Madonna’s 'MDNA World Tour' Blu-ray in U.S., Manufacturing Error Blamed
Madonna's MDNA Tour Blu-ray Is Being Recalled - Posted: 09/23/2013 8:38 am EDT | Updated: 09/23/2013 4:14 pm EDT
After weeks of fan uproar, Interscope has decided to recall Madonna's MDNA Tour Blu-ray special on account of flawed audio mixing and poor video quality.
Madonna herself addressed the problem in her recent Reddit AMA, admitting that she was "absolutely horrified" at reports that the product was less than perfect. "My label is looking into it," Madonna wrote. "Trying to get to the bottom of it. It might be a case of old technology not working with new technology. Please be patient. I spent 6 months editing and doing the sound mix for the DVD, last thing I want to hear is that fans aren't getting the fruits of my labor."
Late Sunday night, Interscope took to Madonna's Facebook page to admit that there were certain problems with the discs and announce a United States-only recall:
From Interscope Records:
Interscope Records would like to make consumers of Madonna's MDNA World Tour Blu-ray disc aware that the concert will be seen at its most optimal quality by properly adjusting the settings on your television to "Normal/Movie" mode rather than "Dynamic/Enhanced" mode.
Older Blu-ray players or those without a firmware upgrade may experience glitches when navigating the Blu-ray menu. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to upgrade firmware.
Due to an error in manufacturing that has compromised the 5.1 audio in the US, a full recall of the Blu-ray disc will be issued in the US. No other markets will be affected. We apologize for this inconvenience.

Madonna couldn't edit a two word sentence.

It's hilarious how even some of the most hardcore Queensuckers are finding flaws in their goddess. I'm surprised it hasn't come to a class-action lawsuit (yet).

Some MDNA album/ tour criticism is on other threads, such as, Man-donna won't sing oldies; -ticks off/ bores fans & music reviewers
I am about to post something new to that thread in a few moments, about her MDNA DVD/ tour.

MDNA tour, 2012
Madonna Starts Concert 2 Hours Late, Ends 40 Minutes Early After Anti-Smoking Rant - December 2012
“Hello Santiago, thank you for your patience,” the singer tells the wet crowd of 36,000 when she finally takes the stage.
After a caught-on-tape tirade in which she berated fans to stop smoking during her preshow sound check, Madonna's Chilean stop continued to be a low point for the MDNA Tour.
According to I Love Chile, the 54-year-old pop diva took the stage of the open-air Estadio Nacional in Santiago at 11:30 p.m., two hours after the announced 9:30 set time.
The day had been a wet one, as a freak storm had befallen the South American city. Many of the concertgoers were holding up umbrellas during the technically ambitious and physically arduous performance.
“Hello, Santiago, thank you for your patience,” Madonna told the crowd of about 36,000.
But the singer pulled the plug on the concert at 12:45 a.m., 40 minutes shorter than performances elsewhere around the globe.
The result? Angry fans, some of whom took to Twitter to unload some of their frustrations.
"Fail! No more back to Chile … unprofessional and very disrespectful to her fans!” wrote one. "Gaga is the new Queen of Pop," zinged another.
The good news for Madonna: Her final MDNA Tour stop is Saturday night in Cordoba, Argentina. The tour was 2012's most financially successful, taking in close to $230 million in ticket sales.
