cached page Someone brought this up before. We don't go around writing fake reviews of stuff we've never listened to, but I don't think any of us here would lose sleep if Mariah fans did that to Madonna. It's kind-of funny in a way, considering how much Madonna has rigged things and bribed/fellated people over the years.

I'm not a Mariah Carey fan, and I've no idea if her fans are really trying to thwart Madonna's new record or not.
When I first made my anti-Madonna site in 2003, I simply asked people to boycott her 'American Life' record. Beyond that, I wasn't involved in any hi-jinks or plots to bring down Man-donna. (She did herself in, actually; that record sucked and it did not sell much.)
Someone at the board did a post about this a few months ago, about the Carey fans embarking on a campaign to topple Madonna's new record, and if I ever find that thread, I think I'd like to merge this one with the other thread. ----- Drowned Madonna Blog Entry on Carey Fans

Grammy Cat-Fight: Madonna Vs. Mariah Carey
Grammys Tomorrow: Madonna Hates Mariah - Feb. 7, 2006
Some of you may be under the impression that the Grammys are an exercise in rewarding the best musicians in the world for their hard work, but you'd be wrong - it's entirely an ego thing.
It doesn't really matter who wins what at tomorrow's Grammys, so long as a handful of long-simmering rivalries get torn wide open in as entertaining a way as possible. And things are looking good - it's being reported that Madonna and Mariah Carey are already at each other's throats over who gets to sing first. Brilliant.
Remember Live 8? Both Madonna and Mariah Carey (CDs) performed that day and, in their own ways, both tried to outdo each other. Madonna's opening volley - holding a confused African's hand and saying "m*****f***er," before singing the same line of a song over and over again - was generally thought to have outdone Mariah's later effort - getting loads of little Africans on the stage and then complaining endlessly about mic stands and being thirsty. And Mariah, if reports are to be believed, is still smarting.
But - Mariah being Mariah - she had a cunning plan to upstage her old rival at the Grammys; she wanted to open the show with an immense, choir-backed version of her hit single We Belong Together. After all, she must have thought, she is up for eight awards. This is her year. Beat that, Madonna.
So Madonna did - she decided that she wanted to open the Grammys herself, by doing a duet with some mockney cartoons. Tough choice - a self-obsessed harpy endlessly wailing like Michael J Fox trying to operate a theremin, or a pensionable woman wearing a piece of dental floss singing a song with the wannabe Alvin & The Chipmunks?
Eventually, the producers of the Grammys settled on Madonna and Gorillaz to open the show - and Mariah is apparently totally pissed. Let's cross our fingers for a Jarvis Cocker-style stage invasion by Carey during Madonna's performance tomorrow night.

'Belong Together' drives Mariah, Madge apart - NY Daily News
Excerpt from NY Daily News (link above):- Even though Madonna's smash "Confessions on a Dancefloor" wasn't nominated for any Grammys, the producers gave in. They're said to be betting that her dance extravaganza, featuring the British group Gorillaz, will hook viewers early and hard.
"The producers noted that Madge is a five-time winner," reported a source.
But Carey, the comeback queen who has picked up only two Grammys to date, is reportedly vexed.
"The war between Madonna and Mariah has been going on for years," says a source. "Mariah was also steaming last summer when Madonna stole the show at Live 8."

This is a review of sorts about the '06 Grammys, but because the Madonna fan site I was looking at categorized this as a "Madonna Vs. Mariah" thing, I've placed it in the Mariah thread.
Kurt Loder has obviously never visited the Flea Dip Anti Madonna site or this board, or he'd know better than to make a silly claim such as, "Madonna cares about songs and about creating a musical experience..."
I have a few more comments below this - From Drowned Madonna - Kurt Loder '' Mariah will never have Madonnas Power'.
"...All of these people might profitably contemplate the opening performance by Madonna. Here's a woman who has never made a fetish of vocal technique — her larynx is only a part of her artistic arsenal, not the sole point of her existence.
Madonna cares about songs and about creating a musical experience with them. This is what she did last night, rising up onstage with the ABBA sample burbling away and those cruel thighs flashing and the usual contingent of funky folk slinking and twirling around her. It was the Madonna experience.
Mariah Carey, whose awkwardness onstage is almost touching, will never have this power to command as a performer. Carey may sell twice as many records as Madonna these days (more than that, actually), but as they never say in the record business, sales aren't everything."
source: MTV.com Written by Gugarko on 2006-02-10 21:21:24
The fans are hypocrites, though.
They will quote something like this Loder article, to say "sales don't matter," or her lack of singing ability doesn't matter, but then they will turn around on their sites or come to this board to argue that her sales do matter (i.e. "She's so successful!") and that she can sing very well live.
The Madonna fans ripped on Elton John for ripping on Madonna for lip synching. Now they're (apparently) quoting from this in glee, quoting a reviewer who says in effect, "Her singing may not be great, but who cares, she's so great on stage anyhow."
I'm not sure that in the attempt to argue that Mariah Carey may not be a strong performer on stage that it was necessary to elevate Madonna by comparison, and in the process.
Some of us aren't impressed by Madonna's "stage presence" or by anything else she does.

Drowned Madonna has a news clipping in French, and it seems to have a snarky comment by Mariah Carey about Madonna.
I am too lazy to look up accented letters and what all - to see the French in its original, please click link above... - "Madonna est une legende. Ca fait un moment qu'elle est la et je suis contente pour elle." -Mariah Carey

Madonna laughs at Carey's ticket sales slump
Grand Tour Vs. Not So Grand - newspaper article scan
Madonna reportedly laughed [about Carey's tour]
Madonna Cackles With Delight At Mariah's Misfortune - scroll down page to get to the part about Manny - Mariah Carey once said that she grew up listening to the songs of Madonna, which apparently irked the Material Girl, given that Carey is only 11 years younger than she is.
Madonna still holds a grudge: According to Rush & Molloy, Madge was preparing to go onstage during a tour stop in Chicago when she was told that Carey had to cancel three tour dates on account of low ticket sales.
"Madonna laughed hysterically," said a source. "She has been asking her tour promoters to E-mail her Mariah's numbers!"
What's more, Madonna is taking a somewhat sadistic pleasure in hearing that Carey was miffed that "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson said that he'd been "inspired" by Madonna's LA show.
The elder pop queen's rep says there's no feud: "She has no negative feelings toward Mariah." Mariah's rep adds that a few cities were cancelled so that she could "add shows in larger cities."

Mariah Carey Back: Diva Readies for Dec. 4 Release - By Roger Friedman
September 21, 2007
Later, I [Roger Friedman] told her [Mariah Carey] that there had been a small war going on between Madonna’s fans and hers, and that some of it resulted in nasty e-mails to this column.
“What? Why?” she asked. “I mean, I think I was in sixth grade when Madonna got started.”
Carey’s old rivalry used to be with Whitney Houston, who was closer in age. But with Houston in semi-retirement for now, somehow Madonna became her peer.

Outside of this "Pop Justice" blog, a VH1 board, and some other discussion board, I've not been able to find this interview anywhere else (the people who post it do not name a source), so take this with a grain of salt:- Here's an excerpt from an interview with Mariah Carey’s label boss LA Reid who talkes about Madonna:
Have you always been a Mariah Carey fan? I’ve been a fan since "Vision of Love" and think she is the greatest singer ever to walk the planet. She makes all the other "divas" look like "divers’ if you know what I mean.
Even Madonna? (He chuckles). Who’s Madonna? No really, nothing against Madonna. She is someone who took mediocre talent and through self promotion, became a huge star. You have to give her credit for that. But she’s making a huge mistake releasing an album at the same time as Mariah this Spring.
Is Mariah Aware that Madonna is releasing her album two weeks later? She’s very aware but doesn’t feel threatened. Madonna hasn’t had a hit - at least in the USA - for ten years so she’s not competition at all. Source: Pop Justice

Some of this has also been put in the "Madonna Beaten in Musical Related Areas (sales figures, etc)" thread Mariah Carey Surpasses Elvis With New #1 Single - April 2, 2008
Mariah Carey Surpasses Elvis With New #1 Single
Mariah Carey has made history with her latest single "Touch My Body." Carey toppled Elvis Presley's 50+ year Billboard Hot 100 record by achieving the 18th #1 single of her career. Presley had held the #2 spot with 17 #1 singles since Billboard's inception of the Hot 100 in 1958.
Mariah is now well on pace to surpass the current record holders, The Beatles, who have 20 #1 hit songs.
"Touch My Body" had a record-setting debut sales week of 286,000 downloads on the Billboard digital hot songs chart, and reached a Hot 100 Airplay radio audience of over 115 million.
All the attention is sure to pave the way for impressive sales of her new album E=MC², which hits stores April 15. Fans who currently pre-order the album on iTunes will instantly receive a copy of "Touch My Body."
Mariah is scheduled for two American Idol appearances this month (April 9 and 16) as well as a visit on the all mighty Oprah show on April 14.
E=MC² is Mariah's 11th studio album and was executive produced by the singer and Island Def Jam Chairman Antonio "LA" Reid. Guest producers include Jermaine Dupri, DJ Toomp, Stargate, will.i.am, Bryan Michael Cox, Nate "Danjahandz" Hills and James Poyser.

I don't really see where this is "dissing" Madonna, but here you are...
Mimi's Madonna Diss - Posted April 23rd, 2008 by fashiongossip
Mariah Carey recently did an interview for Spain's Shangay Express magazine. And she took a few not-too-subtle digs at the one and only Madonna! A reporter from the magazine flew to New York to interview Miz. Carey and witnessed the divaness first-hand.
First, the album listening that was scheduled for 6pm was postponed ’til 9pm. The interview, which was supposed to take place at 9pm was posted to midnight. Then after hours of waiting, at 2:30am, they cancelled the interview since Mimi was too tired.
The next day, the reporter was invited to attend an MTV TRL taping. In total, Mariah had 11 people surrounding her, consisting of bodyguards, assistants, makeup peeps, label reps and wardrobe assistants. Now that's the way to travel!
Finally, the reporter gets the interview, with 3 hours left to spare before their flight departs.
Some of the highlights from the interview include: - When the reporter asks if Mariah's obsessed with portraying an unreal image of herself via photoshop, Mariah denies the claim stating that everyone uses photoshop in the business. Everyone.
- When asked about Madonna (how dare that reporter mention that name infront of Mimi!!!) and how she feels about her Madgesty recording an R&B album, Mariah responds that it's "interesting." Then pauses, and continues, "It's very interesting."
- When the reporter mentions that Madonna worked with Pharrell (who also worked with Mimi), she asks if Mariah gave her some indirect inspiration. Carey responds, "I don't know, I don't have any idea about her intentions. I'll just say that it's very interesting."
- When questioned about creating her own clothing line, Mimi responds, "I'm working on my own collection of lingerie, darling. Why shouldn't I dedicate myself to under garments?"
- And when asked if her "diva demands" get worse over time, she responds, "What is over time? What is a diva? I know a lot about divas because it's a word I've heard ever since I was a little girl, because my mom is an opera singer. Diva demands? I don't think I have any. I'm a person who can take care of myself, you believe me, right?"
Riiiiiiiiiight.
You be starting a girlfight, Mimi!

Week Ending April 20, 2008: Now That's What I Call A Debut! - Posted Wed Apr 23 11:44am PDT by Paul Grein in Chart Watch
Mariah Carey's E=MC2 opens at #1 with sales of 463,000--the fattest opening-week total of her career.
Carey's previous top opening (404,000) was made by her most recent album, The Emancipation Of Mimi. E=MC2 also tops Jack Johnson's Sleep Through The Static for the best opening so far in 2008. Johnson debuted with sales of 375,000 in February. The last album to open with a higher sales number was Mary J. Blige's Growing Pains, which opened with sales of 629,000 in December.
Carey's album sold as many copies as the next 12 albums on this week's chart, combined.
And yet, Carey's opening tally is less than half of the first week total of the biggest opener of 2007, Kanye West's Graduation, which bowed with sales of 957,000 in September. In fact, 10 albums in 2007 debuted with higher sales totals.
The others were, in descending order, Alicia Keys, the Eagles, 50 Cent, Blige, Linkin Park, High School Musical 2, Rascal Flatts, Carrie Underwood and T.I.
For Carey to fall short of blockbusters by West, Keys and the Eagles is no shame, but failing to keep pace with more routine hits by Underwood and T.I. raises questions--especially given Carey's all-out promotional effort. She appeared on TV's #1 show, American Idol, and the #1 daytime show, Oprah.
In the end, what you make of Carey's number is a lot like the old philosophical question: Is the glass half empty or half full?
On the same day that Sen. Hillary Clinton won the crucial Pennsylvania primary, female solo artists locked up the top three spots on Nielsen SoundScan's list of the nation's best-selling albums.
Trailing Carey are Leona Lewis and Miley Cyrus.
It's the first time that female solo artists have swept the top three spots since January 2003, when Norah Jones, Jennifer Lopez and Avril Lavigne led the chart.
E=MC2 is Carey's sixth #1 album, a total matched by only three female artists in chart history.
Barbra Streisand is out front with eight #1 albums. Madonna and Janet Jackson also have six. Carey, 38, is the youngest member of this high-powered group.
Streisand is 65, Madonna is 49 and Jackson is 41.
Carey also started her career much later than these other women. In 1990, when Carey released her first album, Streisand had already piled up six #1 albums, Madonna had amassed three and Jackson had had two. Carey has had to play catch-up.
This marks a continuation of one of the most dramatic comebacks in recent pop history. It's easy to forget now, but in 2001, when her movie Glitter bombed, Carey became a punch-line.
Her behavior was briefly erratic.
It wasn't a meltdown of Britney Spears proportions, but it was far from the highly polished persona that Carey had cultivated.
Thinking they were cutting their losses, Virgin Records gave her a multi-million dollar payout to leave the label. That would have been a humiliating blow to many artists, but Carey soldiered on.
Her first step was to quickly return with a new album, Charmbracelet. The album has sold 1,149,000 copies, a far cry from her blockbusters, but good enough to prove that she wasn't as washed-up as everyone was saying.
And then she came back with The Emancipation Of Mimi, which put her right back on top. The album has sold 5,848,000 copies--third best of all of Carey's albums (behind only Daydream, which has sold 7,547,000 copies, and Music Box, which has sold 7,172,000).
Emancipation spawned three #1 or #2 hits and brought Carey three Grammys, her first wins since her debut album.
All six of Carey's #1 albums have spawned at least #1 single on the Hot 100.
n fact, her five previous #1 albums all spun off at least two #1 hits.
In addition, Carey is the #1 female album seller of the Nielsen/SoundScan era (which began in May 1991). She and Celine Dion are the only women with five albums listed among Nielsen/SoundScan's all-time top 200.
For the first time in nearly five years, there are three movie soundtracks in the top 10. The Best Of Both Worlds Concert is #4, Juno is #7 and Alvin & The Chipmunks is #8.
This last happened in June 2003, with The Lizzie McGuire Movie, 2 Fast 2 Furious and The Matrix Reloaded. Note that in both cases, one of the movies was a big-screen spin-off of a Disney Channel TV series.
"4 Minutes" by Madonna featuring Justin Timberlake returns to #1 on Hot Digital Songs, with sales of 202,000 downloads. This is the fifth straight week that the #1 song on that chart has registered more than 200,000 downloads. That's a new record.
Here's the low down on this week's top 10 albums.
1. Mariah Carey, E=MC2, 463,000. Four songs from the album rank in the top 100 on Hot Digital Songs. The shimmering "Touch My Body" holds at #6. The ballad "Bye Bye," which Carey performed on American Idol, bows at #11. Also debuting: "Migrate" at #61 and "Side Effects" at #95.
2. Leona Lewis, Spirit, 95,000. Lewis was hyped, in part, as the new Mariah, so it's somehow fitting that she was bumped from #1 by the old Mariah. "Bleeding Love" slips from #1 to #3 on Hot Digital Songs. "Better In Time" drops from #24 to #74.
3. Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana/Soundtrack, Best Of Both Worlds Concert, 47,000. Cyrus' album vaults from #31 last week, as it goes from being a Wal-Mart exclusive to broader retail distribution. Its sales jumped by 162%, which ties the resurgent Juno soundtrack for the biggest gain of any album in the top 200. Best Of Both Worlds Concert is the first live album to crash the top three since Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds' Live At Radio City Music Hall opened at #3 in August. It's also the #1 movie soundtrack for the third time in the past six weeks. "See You Again" holds at #9 on Hot Digital Songs.
4. Lady Antebellum, Lady Antebellum. 43,000. This is the third week in a row that a country artist has debuted in the top five. George Strait opened at #1 two weeks ago. James Otto bowed at #3 last week. But Strait is a superstar and even Otto had released a previous album. This is Lady Antebellum's debut. "Love Don't Live Here" debuts at #91 on Hot Digital Songs.
5. Various Artists, NOW 27, 39,000. The compilation has sold 552,000 copies. It's the sixth best-seller of 2008 to date.
6. George Strait, Troubadour, 38,000. Strait, the most durable country superstar of the past 25 years, is bumped from #1 on the country chart by the little-known Lady Antebellum. You just never know what's going to happen next. "I Saw God Today" dips from #91 to #96 on Hot Digital Songs.
7. The Chipmunks/Soundtrack, Alvin & The Chipmunks, 32,000. The soundtrack, which peaked two weeks ago at #5, slips another notch to #7. It's the #10 album of 2008 to this point. It's the year's #2 movie soundtrack, trailing only Juno.
8. Various Artists, Juno soundtrack, 31,000. The soundtrack vaults from #46 last week in the wake of the film's release on DVD. That's a sales increase of 162%, which ties Miley Cyrus' album for the biggest increase of any album in the top 200. Juno has sold 643,000 copies. Counting just its 2008 sales, it's #3 for the year to date.
9. R.E.M., Accelerate, 30,000. This is R.E.M.'s first album to log three weeks in the top 10 since The New Adventures Of Hi-Fi in 1996. The band first reached the top 10 in November 1987 with Document. (OK, the full title was R.E.M. No. 5: Document.) A 21-year span of top 10 albums is pretty impressive for a band that started out as an alternative, college-circuit act.
10. Taylor Swift, Taylor Swift, 30,000. Swift's album jumps from #13 to #10 in its 78th week on the chart. It's the oldest album to appear in the top 10 since Nickelback's All The Right Reasons, which was in its 102nd week on the chart when it made its final appearance in the top 10 in September. Swift's album has sold 2,816,000 copies, more than any other album in the top 10. Taking into account just its 2008 sales, it's #5 for the year to date. "Picture To Burn" vaults from #50 to #30 on Hot Digital Songs.
Five albums fall out of the top 10. Rick Ross' Trilla dips from #8 to #11, James Otto's Sunset Man drops from #3 to #12, Danity Kane's Welcome To The Dollhouse slips from #10 to #14, Ray J's All I Feel falls from #7 to #35 and P.O.D.'s When Angels And Serpents Dance plummets from #9 to #44.
Top 20 Debuts: Thrice bows at #17 with Alchemy Index: Vols. III and IV: Air & Earth. This is the California-based rock group's third straight top 20 album. The band's 2003 breakthrough album, The Artist In The Ambulance, hit #16. Its 2005 follow-up Vheissu, reached #15. And Rush's Snakes & Arrows Live opens at #18. The veteran band's studio album Snakes & Arrows opened at #3 in May. This double-CD set is Rush's sixth multi-disk live album. All have reached the top 40. One made the top 10-1981's Exit...Stage Left.
That Sinking Feeling: Marie Digby's Unfold plummets from #29 to #118, a 68% drop in sales. That's the steepest drop of any album in the top 200.
I Can Only Imagine: Ultimate Power Anthems Of The Christian Faith returns to #1 on the Catalog Albums chart, again displacing Michael Jackson's Thriller 25. The contemporary Christian collection sold 20,000 copies this week and would have ranked #19 if the older, catalog albums were allowed to compete on the big chart.
Heads Up: This is the eighth consecutive week that an album has debuted at #1. It's the longest such streak since last spring and summer. Then, it took T.I. to break the string of revolving door chart-toppers by logging a second week at #1. Will Carey break the string this time? We shall see. She'll have to fend off Ashlee Simpson's third album, Bittersweet World, which is expected to be next week's top new entry. Simpson's first two albums, Autobiography and I Am Me, opened at #1. Also due next week: Flight Of The Conchords' eponymous full-length debut album. The group's six-track EP The Distant Future reached #116 in August.
Clive Davis: Last Wednesday, Leona Lewis' debut album entered the album chart at #1 and her single "Bleeding Love" returned to #1 on the Hot 100. One day later, Clive Davis was replaced as Chairman/CEO of the BMG Label Group, North America, which encompasses Lewis' label, J Records. (And here I've always thought that a bottle of champagne was the appropriate congratulatory gift.) Clive is staying on as Chief Creative Officer for Sony BMG Music Entertainment Worldwide, but the move was widely seen as an unwelcome one.
Clive has his share of detractors. The man has a touch of ego. OK, maybe more than a touch. Though what some people see as arrogance is a patrician air that is simply his manner. Some say that he is limited-without peer at finding hits for pop artists, but not as adept at other genres. But every music executive has his niche. Nobody ever dissed Berry Gordy for being "limited." Some say that he specializes in music and artists that are ephemeral. The last time I checked, Barry Manilow was doing pretty well, 33 years after his first hit, "Mandy"--a song that Clive brought him.
Let ‘em say what they will. Few, if any, executives in the history of the music business have lasted as long at the top as Clive Davis. Clive has been an industry leader since 1966, when he was named Vice President and General Manager of Columbia Records. You've got to give the guy credit for his staying power, work ethic and passion for music.
Credit Roll: This marks six months of Chart Watch. I'd like to thank Rob Cisco and his team at Nielsen SoundScan for letting me play with their data each week; Geoff Mayfield and his team at Billboard, which began publishing a weekly pop album chart 35 years before Nielsen SoundScan set up shop; and Joel Whitburn's Record Research company for publishing a series of first-rate chart reference books.
The Nielsen/SoundScan information allows those of us who do this to write with an unprecedented degree of precision and specificity.
The Billboard chart data for the pre-1991 period gives the column greater depth and a sense of history. And the Whitburn books allow me to check my facts quickly and get the darned thing posted already. My thanks to all of them, and to you for reading it.

Diva Smackdown: Mariah Vs Madonna- Two of the world's biggest female pop stars released new albums in April: Mariah Carey's "E=MC2" and Madonna's "Hard Candy." Sure, you've read the reviews and heard the singles…but how do these two icons really measure up against each other? Metromix pitted diva against diva in a head-to-head battle of sales figures, wardrobes, publicity stunts and memorable career moves (good and bad) and tallied the results.
Reaction to the new albums
While reviews for Mariah Carey’s new album “E=MC2” have been largely favorable, advance word on Madonna’s “Hard Candy” has been…largely favorable. Rolling Stone gives “Hard Candy” four stars to “E=MC2”’s three, but writes that Madge “lets top-shelf producers make her their plaything.” And Entertainment Weekly gave “Hard Candy” a stingy B+ rating, but calls it a “surprisingly rejuvenated set,” while also noting that Mariah’s latest—an A- in their book—proves that “her comeback was no fluke.”
Advantage: Neither. We’re calling this one a tie. Collaborators
Sure, Mariah got such A-listers as T-Pain, Jermaine Dupri (pictured), Damian Marley, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland apprentice Nate “Danja” Hills to show up on her album. Big deal. Madonna got Timba himself—along with Justin Timberlake, Kanye West and Pharrell Williams (and, for good measure, she threw Nate “Danja” Hills on there, too—dude’s résumé is getting pretty stacked). All in all, “Hard Candy” features fewer collaborators, but really, who else do you need besides those guys?
Advantage: Madonna. Outrageous outfits
Do we even need to tell you who wins in this category? It’s Madonna and her disco-dominatrix get-ups all the way!
Advantage: Madonna. Shameless publicity stunts
Sure, Mariah Carey’s been pulling out all the stops lately, appearing on “American Idol” and “Good Morning America” and even lighting up the Empire State Building in her “signature colors” (pink, lavender and white, in case you really had to know). But let’s face it: none of that will ever top Madonna’s soul kiss with Britney at the MTV Awards, or the fake crucifixion she staged as part of her Confessions world tour in 2006. No one plays the publicity game better than the Material Girl.
Advantage: Madonna. Chart domination
Both Madonna and Mariah broke chart records in 2008: Mariah notched her 19th No. 1 single on April 1, giving her more than any solo artist in Billboard chart history, while in the same week, Madonna had her 37th top 10 single, the most of any artist ever. Both ladies beat out Elvis Presley to reach their milestones.
Advantage: Madonna. Although 19 No. 1 singles is impressive, Mariah still ranks second in that department to the Beatles. Madge, on the other hand, owns the top 10. Album sales
In the U.S., this one’s a squeaker: according to the Recording Industry Association of America, Madonna’s U.S. album sales total 63 million, while Mariah’s total 61.5 million. Worldwide, the contest is a little more clear-cut: Madonna’s album sales are pushing the 150 million mark, while Mariah’s are hovering just shy of 100 million.
Advantage: Madonna. Fan support
How much do Madonna’s fans still love her? So much that when MTV.com posted a “track-by-track reaction” to a leaked version of “Hard Candy” two weeks before its release, the backlash from angry fans forced them to issue a contrite follow-up just three days later, clarifying that the reaction was not an official review. Mariah, meanwhile, drew boos from the crowd at Los Angeles’ Universal CityWalk when she showed up two hours late for an autograph signing, then left with 100 fans still waiting.
Advantage: Madonna. Bad marriages
Madonna’s marriage to hot-tempered actor Sean Penn lasted only four years, from 1985 to 1989, before ending in divorce. Mariah’s marriage lasted a similar length of time, but was much more influential in shaping her early career: she got hitched to the man credited with discovering her, Sony Music mogul Tommy Mottola, in 1993. Madonna eventually remarried, to British filmmaker Guy Ritchie; Mariah remains single.
Advantage: Madonna. Sean Penn may be a jerk, but at least he didn’t try to orchestrate his wife’s entire career, as Mottola apparently did with Mariah. Movie disasters
In this corner, we have “Glitter,” the 2001 film and accompanying soundtrack album that were so poorly received, Virgin Records actually dropped Mariah Carey’s recording contract, losing $28 million in the process. And over here, we have “Swept Away,” the 2002 “comedy” directed by Madonna’s husband, Guy Ritchie, that got such viciously negative reviews, Madonna vowed never to act in a feature film again (so far, it’s a promise she’s kept).
Advantage: Mariah. As bad as “Glitter” was, it only received one Golden Raspberry Award (for “Worst Actress”); “Swept Away” won five. Ouch. Public meltdowns
Back before celebrity meltdowns were so common that VH1 could build entire shows around them, a very manic Mariah Carey went on “TRL” in 2001 and freaked out Carson Daly by taking off her clothes, handing out popsicles and saying things like, “I just want one day off where I can go swimming and look at rainbows and like, eat ice cream.” She checked into a mental health facility a few days later. Madonna, on the other hand, has never really had a public meltdown, unless you count one of many scenes in the 1991 documentary “Truth or Dare” where she goes ballistic backstage over various technical problems.
Advantage: Madonna. Despite nearly three decades of public scrutiny, she’s never really allowed the façade to crack. The verdict: it’s all about Madonna
When the results are tallied, Madge wins this diva smackdown handily, by a final score of 8-1 (with one tie). Sorry, Mimi—you may be a superstar, but you’re no Madonna!

This should probably be merged later with some other thread, like the "Mariah" thread, or "Madonna beaten in sales numbers" thread... FOX411: There's a New Queen of Pop: Mariah Beats Madonna - Mariah Beats Madonna
The war is over and there’s a new queen of pop: Miss Mariah Carey.
How do we know?
Hitsdailydouble.com is reporting that estimated first week sales for Madonna’s Hard Candy album will range between 275,000-300,000.
Mariah’s “E=MC2” sold 475,000 in its first week and was Carey’s biggest debut ever.
In addition to that, Madonna’s numbers are a slide downwards from her last album, "Confessions on a Dance Floor," which 350,000 copies its first week out and went on to sell 1.7 million copies in the U.S. That was three years ago.
So what happened? Kabbalah and Malawi didn’t help, neither did dependence on Justin Timberlake singing like Michael Jackson on the debut single, “4 Minutes to Save the World.”
Madonna is also hobbled by the Warner M. Group’s broken marketing machine and the company’s sinking stock. It’s a good bet that Wall Street analysts will be asking about “Hard Candy” on next week’s conference call with Bronfman and Cohen.
Madonna will keep pumping “Hard Candy” tonight at 10 p.m. with a six song set at the Roseland Ballroom that may feature a whooping Timberlake and the 50-year-old singer wearing leather chain mail.
If it’s anything like her Roseland performance several years ago, though, on Monday, November 6, 2000, I wrote that night: that stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna's pal Rupert Everett, Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner with his boyfriend, Matt Nye and actor John Leguizamo were all there, but the hoi polloi dressed like a Rocky Horror Halloween.
There were a lot of rhinestones and cowboy hats. There were also drag queens of every size and shape, boys in dresses, the whole thing. No one would have been surprised to see deceased Studio 54 owner Steve Rubell rise from the dead.
The show that night lasted 20 minutes. There were almost no live instruments used except in a semi-acoustic "Don't Tell Me," which had a cadre of cowgirl violinists and was the best number of the five. Otherwise, it was all deadly pre-recorded synthesizer. As one security guard said, "Four days work, and it was just 20 minutes?"
The show had a forced feeling. There was no spontaneity. And if Madonna really cared for those thousands of fans who'd been hanging around for three hours, a couple of her hits wouldn't have been so hard to perform.
We’ll see how different tonight’s show is…

Mariah Stays at No. 1 Enjoys Calm Before the Madonna Storm - Apr 30, 2008, 05:10 PM | by Chris Willman
Categories: Music Biz
The “2” in E=MC2 stands for the two weeks that Mariah Carey was guaranteed at the top with her new album.
It earned a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard/Soundscan chart by selling 182,000 copies, down 61% from its opening sales.
Carey’s album may come back to enjoy more weeks in the top position, but next week won’t be one of them, since Madonna’s debuting Hard Candy will be a lock for that slot when we next bring you the chart news.
The week’s most surprising debut was the No. 3 entry for Flight of the Conchords, releasing their first full-length disc after finding fame on HBO. It sold a not-so-wacky 52,000.
That’s only the second time the Sub Pop label out of Seattle has had a debut in the top 10 (the first was last year, when the Shins bowed at No. 2). It’s the highest ranking comedy album since Steve Martin hit No. 2 in 1978.
Ashlee Simpson may be feeling more bitter than sweet about sales for her third album. Bittersweet debuted at No. 4 with sales of 47,000. In contrast, both of her previous albums entered on top, with her freshman effort selling 398,000 in 2004 and her second one opening with 220,000 the following year.
Maybe Ashlee, like sister Jessica, will soon announce that she’s rediscovered her country roots and take up shop in Nashville.
Other debuts of note: Indie hip-hop duo Atmosphere entered the Billboard chart’s atmosphere at No. 5 with 36,000 copies sold of When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That S--- Gold. (Their best chart position prior to this: No. 66.) Slick country balladeer Phil Vassar debuted at No. 10 with Prayer of a Common Man, equaling his highest position to date, on sales of 27,000. And Story of the Year came in at No. 18, selling 21,000 units.
On the digital songs front, Leona Lewis retook the top spot with “Bleeding Love,” thanks to a guest slot on American Idol. Sales for the download were up 30%, as she sold another 236,000 to add to the single’s 1.6 million total. Madonna’s “Four Minutes” fell back into the No. 2 slot. The highest entry among digital songs was Chris Brown’s “Forever,” in at No. 6 with first-week sales of 113,000.
