Mariah Carey's Album Still Strong At Number One For The Second Week
  • May 1 2008

Los Angeles, CA (CNS) - Pop diva Mariah Carey is still going strong at the top for the second week in a row, but Madonna's Hard Candy is fast catching up.

Carey's "E=MC2" album debuted at the top of Billboard 200 last week and she's still holding on to the top spot, leaving relatively newcomer Leona Lewis' "Spirit" at number two.

But all that may change after pop superstar Madonna's "Hard Candy" scored 100,000 of sale on the first day. If her album hit the top spot next week, she would easily topple down Carey's reign.
The Charts: Mariah Carey Stays At No. 1

She might have taken a dip in sales this week, but Mariah Carey remains atop the Billboard 200 for the second week in a row.

The R&B diva's set, E=MC2, maintained the no. 1 spot with 182,000 copies sold, a 61% sales decline.

At no. 2 is British singer Leona Lewis' Spirit, whic followed suit by staying put at no. 2 in its third week. She managed to sell 96,000 units, putting her total right under 400K.

....According to Billboard.com, album sales this week are down 8% from last week's sum with 6.87 million units and down 11% from the same week last year.

Mariah Carey’s new “E=MC2” (Island Def Jam), lost 61 percent of its sales in its second week out, but it’s still the No. 1 album in the country. It moved 182,000 copes, according to Nielsen SoundScan, bringing its two-week total to 645,000.
There's a New Queen of Pop: Mariah Beats Madonna
  • The war is over and there’s a new queen of pop: Miss Mariah Carey.

    How do we know?

Hitsdailydouble.com is reporting that estimated first week sales for Madonna’s Hard Candy album will range between 275,000-300,000.

Mariah’s “E=MC2” sold 475,000 in its first week and was Carey’s biggest debut ever.

In addition to that, Madonna’s numbers are a slide downwards from her last album, "Confessions on a Dance Floor," which 350,000 copies its first week out and went on to sell 1.7 million copies in the U.S. That was three years ago.

So what happened? Kabbalah and Malawi didn’t help, neither did dependence on Justin Timberlake singing like Michael Jackson on the debut single, “4 Minutes to Save the World.”

Madonna is also hobbled by the Warner M. Group’s broken marketing machine and the company’s sinking stock. It’s a good bet that Wall Street analysts will be asking about “Hard Candy” on next week’s conference call with Bronfman and Cohen.

Madonna will keep pumping “Hard Candy” tonight at 10 p.m. with a six song set at the Roseland Ballroom that may feature a whooping Timberlake and the 50-year-old singer wearing leather chain mail.

If it’s anything like her Roseland performance several years ago, though, on Monday, November 6, 2000, I wrote that night:
that stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna's pal Rupert Everett, Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner with his boyfriend, Matt Nye and actor John Leguizamo were all there, but the hoi polloi dressed like a Rocky Horror Halloween.

There were a lot of rhinestones and cowboy hats. There were also drag queens of every size and shape, boys in dresses, the whole thing. No one would have been surprised to see deceased Studio 54 owner Steve Rubell rise from the dead.

The show that night lasted 20 minutes. There were almost no live instruments used except in a semi-acoustic "Don't Tell Me," which had a cadre of cowgirl violinists and was the best number of the five. Otherwise, it was all deadly pre-recorded synthesizer. As one security guard said, "Four days work, and it was just 20 minutes?"

The show had a forced feeling. There was no spontaneity. And if Madonna really cared for those thousands of fans who'd been hanging around for three hours, a couple of her hits wouldn't have been so hard to perform.

    We’ll see how different tonight’s show is…

Parody song of "Touch My Body" by Jackie Beat

"Retouch my body
Don’t cause any trouble
I am in denial
Don’t ya’ burst my bubble
Retouch my body
Just look at Madonna
In real life she looks like
An ancient iguana
Retouch my body
And if you can of course
Try to make me look
Like less of a horse
Retouch my body
I’ve no other choice
I only wish you could retouch my voice
Retouch my f***in'' body!"

Okay, so Madonna might get number one, but her first week sales will not beat Mariah's first week sales. Now I get it. I am glad for that - Mariah doesn't pretend to be anything deeper than a pop singer, so she doesn't irritate me as much as Madonna does. Mariah doesn't seem to have any of Madonna's pretentiousness (and doesn't routinely steal ideas and concepts from others).

This argues that Carey will (or already has in some sense) beat Madonna:

Mariah vs. Madonna: Whose CD is the winner?
  • By Kevin C. Johnson
    POST-DISPATCH POP MUSIC CRITIC
    05/04/2008

A storm is brewing on the pop music charts, with music fans getting blown away by Madonna and Mariah Carey.

The two divas may not be inclined to stand in the same room; it's rumored that they don't exactly fancy each other much. But they're falling all over each other on various album and singles charts.

Both surely want to not only top the other, but best their own track records as well.

Carey is up first with "E=MC2," her follow-up to her huge 2005 effort, "The Emancipation of Mimi." Madonna's "Hard Candy" is her first record since 2005's "Confessions on a Dance Floor."

Here's a look at how the two projects shape up, and who should triumph in the end.

    MARIAH CAREY

CD: "E=MC2," released April 15 on Island/Def Jam; No. 1 on the Billboard 200

Singles: "Touch My Body," which peaked at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 and iTunes Top Songs charts; "Bye Bye" recently debuted at No. 23 on the Hot 100.

Producers: Jermaine Dupri, C. "Tricky" Stewart and The-Dream, DJ Toomp, Stargate, Will.i.am, Bryan Michael Cox, Nate "Danjahandz" Hills, James Poyser and Carey.

Review: Carey named her latest "E=MC2" for good reason. It's a fitting sequel to her 2005 blockbuster "The Emancipation of Mimi." "E=MC2" boasts a perfectly polished mix of up-to-the-minute R&B-pop with just enough shiny hip-hop bits to give Carey a quarter-ounce of street cred. "E=MC2" is ultracommercial, reason enough to love or hate it. We lean toward the former.

Promotion: Carey's been pushing high-profile, can't-beat spots on "American Idol," "Good Morning America" and "The Oprah Winfrey Show." She even has found time to promote her long-simmering movie, "Tennessee." And in what some suggest is the ultimate publicity move, Carey is said to have married Nick Cannon, keeping her name in the headlines all week. She's hustling with a capital H.

Performances: Carey's everywhere singing "E=MC2" songs, but watching her makes us wonder: When did she stop singing live? She's caught up in a flurry of lip-synching, making us wonder whether all those years of piercing notes she used to hit has blown out her voice.

Sales: 154,000 copies sold the first day of release for "E=MC2"; 463,000 copies sold the first week.

Grade — B+: "E=MC2" was carefully calculated to be one of the year's biggest-selling CDs, and it looks as if everything is panning out. She'll have Madonna eating her glitter dust.

    MADONNA

CD: "Hard Candy," released Tuesday on Warner Bros.; likely to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 this week displacing Carey.

Singles: "4 Minutes" featuring Justin Timberlake, which peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 100 and No. 1 on iTunes Top Songs chart.

Producers: The Neptunes, Timbaland, Nate "Danjahandz" Hills, Justin Timberlake and Madonna.

Review: Madonna ends her longtime run with Warner Bros. with a fun departure from her recent trance-techno dance CDs. On "Hard Candy," Madonna unashamedly cribs from Gwen Stefani and Nelly Furtado, borrowing their styles and producers to create her own hot urban grooves.

Promotion: Madonna's been noticeably absent from the usual blur of promotional duties, instead focusing on gracing the covers of high-end nonmusic magazines such as Vanity Fair and Elle. She's also preoccupied with promoting her documentary about the plight of orphans in Malawi, "I Am Because We Are," her bigger passion. The fact that she tossed her entire CD on MySpace four days before its release suggests she's already over it.

Performances: Madonna thrilled a VIP crowd last week at New York's Roseland Ballroom with a 30-minute set of old and new and a guest appearance from Timberlake. But what about the rest of us? Shouldn't she take a page from Carey and at least do "Saturday Night Live"?

Sales: Based on first-day sales Tuesday, Madonna is expected to sell 275,000 to 300,000 copies her first week out.

Grade — B: Her new $120 million deal with Live Nation is where it's at, and she's barely going through the motions with "Hard Candy." And it shows.

Video from Utube called " Exposed madonna fake sales versus mariah carey"
It goes "2000, Guiness book of records declared madonna the best recording artist of all time, selling over more then 150 million albums sold world wide" and then " Would Geuiness have any reason to lie or favour anyone? No"
It then goes onto say that Madonna said of Mariah carey that she is not particulary bright and that she would rather kill herself then be mariah carey! ( Nice! )
Then it goes onto ask how many albums did Mariah carey sell by 2000.
Then it asks " Would madonnas label have reason to lie about her sales? Yes" and that " Madonna and mariahs sales are very close, but mariah has done it in a shorter time".
In 2005 madonnas label reported for the first time madonnas total sales. Which they say is 250 million. They then go onto ask " so what she sold 130 million albums in 5yrs? 5yrs that werent exactly the highlight of her career?"
The person who made this video then goes onto say " Im not saying that mariahs label hasnt exaggerated as well, but they sure didnt double her sales in the count of 5yrs!"

And theres more " Did Madonna write a song that saved lives?" with " Didnt think so !" . " Many have made it through tough times because of MC's inspirational songs" LOL then the author goes onto say " And she doesnt have to dance or create controversy to make up for her lack of talent!" Then goes on " And at the end of the day its about the voice, who has 17 number ones and who doesnt really have 250 million sales ( madonna!)" lol then it shows her " Live to tell" song played in the confessions tour where she straps herself to the cross.

I think perhaps a fan was the author, but still lets hope there is some truth in it!

This seems familiar; maybe it's been posted to the board before.

Diva smackdown: Madonna vs. Mariah
  • Two of the world's biggest female pop stars released new albums in April: Mariah Carey's "E=MC2" and Madonna's "Hard Candy." Sure, you've read the reviews and heard the singles…but how do these two icons really measure up against each other? Metromix pitted diva against diva in a head-to-head battle of sales figures, wardrobes, publicity stunts and memorable career moves (good and bad) and tallied the results.
    Reaction to the new albums

While reviews for Mariah Carey’s new album “E=MC2” have been largely favorable, advance word on Madonna’s “Hard Candy” has been…largely favorable. Rolling Stone gives “Hard Candy” four stars to “E=MC2”’s three, but writes that Madge “lets top-shelf producers make her their plaything.” And Entertainment Weekly gave “Hard Candy” a stingy B+ rating, but calls it a “surprisingly rejuvenated set,” while also noting that Mariah’s latest—an A- in their book—proves that “her comeback was no fluke.”

Advantage: Neither. We’re calling this one a tie.

If Carey does out-sell Madonna, we can post about it in the 'Madonna beaten musically thread' later.

For now...
Mariah Carey hopes to conquer Madonna with new tour

-but note that the author of the above (Sue Bergerstein) has written material in the past where she defended Madonna.

And this Carey piece of hers is snarky in tone, so I'm guessing she's not much of a Carey supporter.

There is a strange, photoshopped advertisement accompanying the Bergenrstein article (view it here) where someone photoshopped Carey's face on to an overweight gal's body and pasted some pizza slices in her hands.

I'm guessing this fakey advertisement is supposed to be some kind of commentary on Carey's weight gain?

Here is the snarky toned commentary by Sue what's-her-face:
  • Mariah Carey's latest album may have been a dud, but that's not stopping her from going on tour. She will kick off her "Angels Advocate" tour New Years Eve at Madison Square Garden. She will then play small venues and is rumored to kick off a much bigger stadium tour in the US this Spring.

Mariah is rumored to be kicking off her US stadium tour at Giant's Stadium in New Jersey sometime in May. She will then supposedly move to Chicago and do a two night stand at Soldier Field. Other stadiums rumored to be part of the Angels Advocate World Tour: Dodger's Stadium in Los Angeles; Fenway Park in Boston; and Shea Stadium in New York City. "Mariah will conquer Madonna's recent tour in terms of attendance numbers and production," a source in the Mariah camp tells us.

We somehow can't imagine Mariah Carey filling up stadiums. However, cardboard humans, often used for movie sets, may become useful at a Mariah Carey concert.

Where is Super Amanda?

This is more documentation for all those Madonna fans who think that other female entertainers attack Madonna first - wrong!

Madonna has trashed other females before, and they did nothing to her to deserve it.

Flashback: Mariah Carey & Madonna Clash In 1995
  • snip video

Many people think that beefs only occur in Hip-Hop (not including the Christina Aguilera’s countless feuds across various genres). However, Pop divas have been known for their battles in the media as well.

One such example is the infamous clash between Mariah Carey and Madonna. Following an almost identical script to the current quarrel between Nicki Minaj and Lil Kim, the duo engaged in a rather public feud in 1995 when Madonna felt threatened by Carey’s meteoric rise to success as her own career had begun to slump.

The way that Carey handled that situation is a shining example of proper media training. Not only did she shut Madonna down just like Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson did after being attacked by the ‘Vogue’ singer themselves, she did it while keeping things classy. Fatality.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! What a great find - I love it!!

Even as early as 1995 the hag was venting her desperation by taking potshots at other female entertainers - all and each of whom had more singing talent in their little fingers than m has ever had in her whole body...

Thanks for digging that up - it must rile m that Mariah still has a viable, credible music career 15 years after that exchange...

Starting around 1994/1995 I noticed Madonna starting to worry about her age and about younger singers.

She worried that Whitney Houston was gonna take over as a bigger singer once in an interview in a 1995 interview and she called Mariah Carey dumb circa. 1995.

That response by Mariah was brilliant. What Madonna had said was completely uncalled for (especially that bit about killing herself if she were Mariah - what does the Vadge have against talent).

Okay...so what did she say about Whitney and Janet???

I don't remember the Whitney story, but I vaguely recall that Madonna made some kind of critical remarks about the Jackson family in general, and Janet then did an interview where she said she was angry at Madonna because nobody criticizes her family.

There was some other interview where Janet basically said that Madonna is a trashy whore (she wasn't as blunt as that).

I don't recall exact dates/ quotes, etc., sorry.

Not that I'm entirely disputing this guy's claim, but Madonna has never been much of a singer, really.

'Mariah's incredible, she's amazing': Casino billionaire James Packer hails popstar girlfriend 'a genius' saying she sings better than Madonna

They shocked observers with their unlikely romance when they were spotted ambling along the cobbled streets of Capri in June.
And it seems billionaire James Packer's love for American singer Mariah Carey is going from strength-to-strength with the casino magnate telling News Corps Australia: 'Mariah is just incredible, amazing she really is...She’s a genius'.

Gushing about his love interest, the businessman went on: 'Who else is there? There is Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. Not Madonna...Those three can sing five octaves...'

James was seen at the side of stage throughout the al fresco show stomping his feet and cheering and clapping as she wowed him and her 12,000 fans.
And when she crooned the words 'glad I found you' from one of her hits, she glanced deliberately at his beaming face.
