Now somebody at the Tribe is making the distinction between copies shipped and copies sold. Hmmm, coincidence?

I saw the headline but didn't stop to read it, thanks for pointing it out.

I'll copy in part of it:
  • Great news for two of the most interesting album of Madonna's back catalogue, as RIIA has certified Bedtime Stories and Music as Triple Platinum - meaning than more than 3,000,000 copies of each have been shipped so far.

As certifications are based on the number of copies shipped the actual sale figures are different: Bedtime Story sold 2,297,000 copies so far through Soundscan and 195,000 more by BMG's Record Music Clubs.

Music sold 2,903,000 copies through Soundscan and another 97,000 by BMG's Record Music Clubs.
So for something like,
  • Who's That Girl
    Platinum (1,000,000) (September 1987)
    (1,300,000 shipped)*
There are 300,000 copies of "Who's That Girl" gathering mold and mildew in Wal-Mart bargin bins?

All I know is that your mutual friend and mine
(have you heard from that person, btw? I haven't, not for a long time; you can send me a private message or post about it in the Private forum if you'd like...)
and that person said that Madonna's p.r. team would intentionally mislead people, count copies shipped as also being copies sold, or lead people to believe (or allow them to believe) that one number was the other.

Since we've brought this up before at our board, yeah, it does make me wonder why one of the "fan" sites just starts to now make a distinction.

Now they're doing the same thing at "Drowned Madonna."

Notice they list "total shipments" at the bottom (and mention "shipments" once or twice through-out), yet they still give the blog entry the misleading title, "The Real Queen of the Charts."

Maybe I'm wrong, but it sounds as though they're implying that she's at #1 on the charts as far as popularity/ air play or records sold is concerned.

If Madonna's company has shipped five million copies of COAD, but only three copies out of the five million sell, how is it honest to say she's the "Real Queen Of The Charts?"

If her album has actually sold trillions of copies and truly is at #1, then I've no quibble with this information, except to say, when are people going to stop lining her pocket book?
  • The Real Queen Of The Charts.

Where are you seeing the 5,000 number? The Madonna fan was mentioning that in one of his posts in the "Cranky" forum. I'll bring this up in the COAD sales figure thread so we don't get this thread too off topic.

They're doing it again.

The fans say that they got this info from BBC, but they didn't cite the primary source (the BBC link) so I don't know how much of this is from the BBC (verbatim) or if it's from the fans, or if it's a fan's paraphrase of the BBC article.

Hee hee, they screwed up the word "Floor" below; it says, "Floo." "Confessions On A Dance Floo."

''Confessions'' is the #6 best selling album of 2005!
  • Apr 1, 2006
With only a couple of months sales, "Confessions On A Dance Floo" has been confirmed by the IFPI as the #6 best selling album of 2005.

Madonna sold 6.3 million copies of her new record during the year, although this will probably refer to sales to record stores (also known as "shippings") rather than to the public.

    Here is the Top Ten.

    [Manny is at #6]
Uh-huh, it's the number of copies shipped to stores, not the amount bought by legions of non-existant Manny fans.

Or is that spelled "existent" ... Hmm...
