The one I'm thinking of unfortunately wasn't on a magazine cover. Come to think of it, it's too bad you have to turn a few pages before it says "has-been". That would make a wonderful cover, though!

The author of the article below seems to think that Madonna was not intentionally trying to stir up controversy with her LAP video :rolleyes2:

Oh yes she was. Maybe in 2006 looking back at that 1989 video it may seem tame, but at the time? It peeved some people, and that was exactly what the Venereal Girl wanted.

Also, Manny was filming a Pepsi commercial at that time. Somebody was talking to her about the big cheeses at Pepsico, and she made some kind of remark,
"Wait until the Pepsi people see my new video [LAP]."

-or maybe it was, "Wait until the Pepsi people see the burning crosses reflected in a Pepsi can."

She said that because she knew the LAP video would offend people and that Pepsi would yank the ad - which they did, after showing it only one time.

And Manny got to keep all the money from the shoot, too.

Getting cross about blasphemy

Excerpts (I've highlighted a funny Manny slam):
  • Jun 22, 2006

    .... Blasphemous images are becoming increasingly common, says Christopher Howse - but this startling picture of Wayne Rooney isn't one of them

    .... The long-suffering passivity of Christians has been the open petrie dish on which the increasingly weird fantasies of the singer Madonna have multiplied.

    "Madonna has provoked outrage with a mock crucifixion live on stage while wearing a crown of thorns," reported a tabloid breathlessly last month. "The 47-year-old singer was strapped to a 20ft-high mirrored cross on the opening night of her world tour."

    But her audience was unlikely to have been composed of shocked nuns or thoughtful layfolk whose lives are directed to their Creator.

    In any case, Madonna's sinewy performances are more likely to put you in mind of Bernard Matthews than of the Redeemer of mankind. And if she truly finds inspiration in the spiritual discipline of Kabbalah, think what she would be getting up to without it.

    Madonna wasn't always quite so gross. The video that accompanied her single Like a Prayer, 17 years ago, before she lost her looks, is now said to have "courted controversy". Surely not.

    Deftly directed by Mary Lambert, it was a touching tale of mistaken identity in a rape case. By the end of the video, the audience understands that Madonna had been attacked by a rapist, but not by a black man. So that was all right.

    Unusually, the video featured St Martin de Porres (1579-1639), the first black American to be canonised. His statue comes to life in response to Madonna's "little" prayer and saves the unjustly accused man, whose image melts into that of the saint in her dream.

    Keats might have imagined it. Compared to the images abounding in many a PG-rated arthouse film, this was unexceptionable.

    What has happened in the intervening years is that the Christian story, elements of which are still familiar to most British people, has been demoted by media persons into just another legendary story, like that of King Arthur or Robin Hood.

    Ironically, this actually makes it more difficult for people whose intention is to be offensive.

    South Park features a cartoon Jesus, and some viewers might turn over to another channel but few formally complain.

    The BBC dropped the comedy Popetown from its schedules (but sold the series abroad) on the grounds of its feebleness, not its blasphemy.

    At a time when Pope John Paul's life was ebbing, a comic sequence showing the decapitation of an excrement-covered pope (voiced by Ruby Wax) was unlikely to prove a ratings winner.

Oh please. Like she even knows this - she just thought it would add an extra element of "outrageousness". I actually got the impression that her original "ideas" for the video were even more crazy but Ms. Lambert (d*mn you!) toned it down just enough so that it wasn't banned before it even aired.

Madonna. Fans. Liz. When will you/she really act like you're brave and mock Mohamed or Islam??
Is there something you're afraid to do? Someone's buttons you are scared to push?

It's so much easier to pick on Christianity - like shooting fish in a barrel.

You know, even if she were to mock Islam, I honestly don't know if she'd get any death threats from extremist Islamo-dirtbags or what have you.

About a year or more ago, Iron Shadow linked to some Muslim web site/board where the fanatical Muslims were talking about Man-donna, and one of them said something to the effect that Man-donna is not worth the cost in ammunition to take her out, that she's a joke, don't take her seriously.

I do not support Muslims or anyone else wanting to kill Madonna. I'm also not comfortable with people joking about it; I think it's inapproriate and unethical. (Which isn't to say I'm a pacifist, though - I think violence in self defense, whether personal or national, is acceptable.)

I just found it interesting that some of the extremist Muslims think Manny's such an idiot that they can't even be bothered to assault her as they would with most people.

It figures that this cross shirt is selling like hot cakes with the fans. From Drowned Madonna:

They really need to ignore her - condemning her and what all is just giving her more attention, which is what she wants.

All of these links cover the same story.

(Yes, I know I pick on her too, but I'm not internationally known, as the Vatican is. Also, I see other problems with her besides the misuse of religious imagery.)

'Excommunicate Madonna'
  • By Nick Pisa, Evening Standard
    3 August 2006

    The Vatican accused Madonna of blasphemy and profanity today over her controversial stage act.

    Senior figures in Rome, where she is to appear in front of 75,000 fans on Sunday, called for her to be excommunicated.

    They launched a scathing attack over the star wearing a crown of thorns while hanging from a huge cross as she sings Live To Tell during her Confessions Tour.

    Cardinal Ersilio Tonino, speaking with the approval of Pope Benedict XVI, said: "This time the limits have really been pushed too far.

    "This (concert) is a blasphemous challenge to the faith and a profanation of the cross. She should be excommunicated."

    He added: "To crucify herself during the concert in the city of Popes and martyrs is an act of open hostility. It is nothing short of a scandal and an attempt to generate publicity.

    "What is really offensive is the exaggeration of it all; it is clearly anti-Church, poor taste and most of all, an insult to Christ.

    "The time will come when this woman will realise that Christ died on the cross for her as well, that he spilt his blood for her. I feel pity for her.

    "I just want to tell her that she must really have reached rock bottom if she feels that to attract the attention of the media she has to enact Christ's suffering and death on the cross."

    Another Vatican official, Bishop Velasio De Paolis, said: " Wizards and satanists use religious objects for black masses and she is simply following them.

    "How this woman can take the name of the mother of Christ I don't know. Her show represents the rotten fruit of secularism and the absurdity of evil. What adds to the offence is that she is doing this in the city which is the cradle of the Roman Catholic faith.

    "A few months ago there was fury at the cartoons of Mohammed. Here we have a blatant profanity of the cross and no one bats an eyelid."

    Madonna, 47, who was brought up a Catholic, said in an interview with the Italian edition of Vanity Fair that her horse riding accident last year brought her closer to God.

    She said: "That was the first serious accident of my life, which is strange when you think how long I have been dancing. I was immobile in bed for more than a month. I was covered in bruises and in agony.

    "I couldn't use my left arm, my shoulders and the upper part of my body. It made me look at life in a new way. It was as if I had been reborn.

    "While I was lying there still, I looked up at the ceiling and promised God, 'I am never going to complain, moan or grumble or be ungrateful again'. " Madonna has insisted that her back-stage dressing room at Rome's Olympic Stadium is decorated completely in white, with white roses and soya snacks.

    She has insisted on a new lavatory which must be removed when the concert is over and destroyed so that it does not end up on an internet auction site.

Catholics, Muslims and Jews Blast Madonna's Plans For Stage Crucifixion in Rome
  • ... "To crucify yourself in the city of the pope and the martyrs is an act of open hostility," Cardinal Ersilio Tonini was quoted as saying in La Stampa daily on Wednesday. "It's a scandal created on purpose by astute merchants to attract publicity."

    Muslim and Jewish leaders also condemned the fake crucifixion.

    "It's not the first time Madonna stages such an act. We deplore it, we feel it is an act of bad taste," said Mario Scialoja, the president of the Muslim World League in Italy.

    "We express solidarity with the Catholic world," said Riccardo Pacifici, spokesman for Rome's Jewish community. "It's a disrespectful act, and to do it in Rome is even worse."

    In May, the Catholic League in the United States expressed its discontent for the stunt after Madonna performed it at the tour's opening concert in Inglewood, California.

  • Rome's Catholic, Muslim and Jewish leaders have united to condemn pop star Madonna's decision to stage a mock-crucifixion when she performs in the Italian capital on Sunday a stone's throw away from Vatican City.

    The lapsed-Catholic diva's latest irreverent performance sees her wearing a fake crown of thorns and descending on a suspended, glittery cross as part of her worldwide Confessions Tour.

    Having already been criticised in the United States, Catholics priests from across the Eternal City have gone one further saying the act "comes close to blasphemy".

    "It is disrespectful, in bad taste and provocative," Father Manfredo Leone from Rome's Santa Maria Liberatrice church said late on Wednesday about the star's latest stage stunt.

    "Being raised on a cross with a crown of thorns like a modern Christ is absurd. Doing it in the cradle of Christianity comes close to blasphemy."

    In an unusual show of religious solidarity, Muslim and Jewish leaders added their condemnation of the self-styled "Queen of Pop", famous for peppering her concerts and videos with controversial religious and sexual imagery.

    "I think her idea is in the worst taste and she'd do better to go home," Mario Scialoja, head of Italy's Muslim League said.

Excerpt from New York Daily News:
  • Cross-cultural ire at Madonna

    .... Word is NBC urged her to cut the crucifixion from her concert to be broadcast in November. But it's staying. "She felt like that was a cornerstone of the show," said NBC exec Kevin Reilly. "We viewed it and didn't see it as being inappropriate."

    ... Liz Rosenberg, mouthpiece for the ecumenical hate object, tells us: "I think the Pope would enjoy the show and would applaud her performance. He has an open invitation to see for himself the eloquence and beauty that Madonna expresses for humanity while performing her poignant song 'Live to Tell.'"
Seeing the words "eloquence," "beauty," and especially "poignant" in the same sentence as "Madonna" is funny - unless it's someone saying she lacks those qualities. :laugh:

I'm sure the Pope is just dying to see a Man-donna concert, with Manny having sex with a saddle...

I bet he puts on Bee Gee's and ABBA records when he's by himself and dances to them, too.

Madonna Invites Pope To Come See Her Concert

~~ EDIT Aug 6, 2006 ~~

Russian Orthodox Church Urges [People] to Boycott Madonna
  • [by] Andrey Kozenko and Alexander Voronov
    Aug 5, 2006

    The Russian Orthodox Church requested the parish on Friday to stay away from Madonna’s concert on September 11 in Moscow.

    The clergy say they do not want the believers to see Madonna exploiting religious symbols for her own ends.

    Vsevolod Chaplin of the Moscow Patriarchate’s international affairs department said yesterday the Church does not recommend Orthodox believers to go to Madonna’s concert on September 11 in Moscow. “Madonna exploits crucifixes, statues of Our Lady and other religious symbols. This is unacceptable,” he told Kommersant.

    The Patriarchate is indignant with Madonna’s new Confessions Tour. The singer performs Live to Tell with a crown of thorns at the background of a giant crucifix studded with Swarovski diamonds and crystals. The first gig of the tour in Los Angeles infuriated representatives of different creeds.

    This is not the first time that Madonna comes up against the Church. Pope John Paul II urged the parish to boycott her concerts in 1990. Earlier, the Catholic Church lashed out at the video for Like A Prayer which depicts burning crosses and the black Jesus Christ.

    Other creeds did not issue similar comments. The spokesperson of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia noted that going to Madonna’s gig is a matter of personal choice.

    Muslims are of a different opinion, though. “Muslims do not need statements of religious leaders to understand that they should not go to the concert – it’s crystal clear,” Geidar Dhzemal, chairperson of the Islamic Committee of Russia, said.
Russian church: Singer Madonna "needs spiritual assistance"
  • Aug 5, 2006

    MOSCOW. Aug 5 (Interfax) -
    The Russian Orthodox Church has argued that U.S. pop singer Madonna "needs spiritual assistance" and advised Orthodox Christians against attending her concerts in Moscow.

    "This is not the first year that this lady has been mixing singing about human passions with Christian symbols - crosses, statues of the Virgin, beads, and now it's self-crucifixion. This means the singer needs spiritual assistance," Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, deputy head of the External Church Relations Department of the Moscow Patriarchate, told Interfax.

    .... "It appears that, by this interest in Christian symbolism, an interest more than strange, the singer seeks to justify her own passions and solve her own internal problems," Chaplin said.
Russian church slams Madonna concert
  • Web posted at: 8/5/2006

    MOSCOW • Russia’s Orthodox Church yesterday accused US superstar Madonna of exploiting Christian symbols for her own ends and called for a boycott of her first-ever concert in Moscow.

    “The US singer Madonna exploits Christian symbols — the cross, rosary beads and the crucifix — and tries to equate human passions, including her own personal passions, with something sacred,” the spokesman for the patriarch of Moscow said.

    “I don’t think that Orthodox believers should support this lady by going to her concert,” father Vsevolod Chaplin said on Echo of Moscow radio station. She “needs spiritual help because she swings between Christianity and Kabbalah,” he said, referring to a branch of Jewish mysticism that the singer follows. ....

For those of you who haven't been to the board in awhile, I also did a post in this thread a day or two ago, right above this one.
~~ EDIT BELOW ~~
--------------
I notice that fan site Drowned Madonna is quoting this quite favorably.

They think it's great; they've headlined their blog page about it as such:

"Italian fans flock to M....despite controversy!!"

Here's the story:

Madonna 'crucifixion' doesn't deter fans

I don't understand this headline.

Who honestly thought Madonna being disrespecful towards Christianity (or any other belief set - or her acting like a bimbo, flipping people off, etc.) would deter any Manny fan, in Italy or any other location?

Most of them, after all, eat this stuff up and cry when she tones it down.

Here's an excerpt from the link above:
  • But Madonna's New York-based spokeswoman, Liz Rosenberg, said in an e-mail that "the context of Madonna's performance on the crucifix is not negative nor disrespectful toward the church."
No, the "context" of the number (supposedly helping starving, sick African orphans) is being used by Madonna as the excuse to mock or to misuse religious imagery in her show.

~~~ EDIT ~~~
Like the guy in the article below - and like someone who sent me a private msg an hour or two ago - I also wondered why the RCC is just now talking about excommunicating Man-donna?
Madonna: "By Their Fruits They Are Known"
  • The Bible says, "Judge not that you be not judged."
    That makes a lot of sense since we are all spiritually damaged due to The Fall. Only Creator God can be the Judge of eternal souls.
    At the same time, Jesus told His own that they were to analyze the fruit on persons' trees to see if it was good or bad. That ministerial obligation Jesus gave to His disciples - lay persons as well as pastors. Further, the apostle Paul wrote that true believers are to have the spirit of discernment via the Holy Spirit's indwelling presence.
    Therefore, without judging Madonna to heaven or hell, the genuine Christian analyzes what she most gladly displays. And what she displays is, according to the same Bible that speaks of judging and analyzing, evil. It is blasphemous. It is of the devil. And for that Madonna will stand at the Judgment Seat of Christ to answer for her spiritually wayward earthly sojourn.
    Obviously, according to the standards of biblical morality, Madonna has not chosen God's holiness for a lifestyle. She has boasted on her sin while at the same time being stroked by talk show celebrities such as Oprah, the latter gasping toward Madonna in awe.
    However, to the biblical Christian, Madonna is repulsive. Now she has publicly draped herself as if crucified, mocking Christ's sinless sacrifice upon Calvary. She brazenly wears a crown of thorns, brashly stretching out her arms as if impaled to the holy tree. She positions such displays just within prayer shot of the Vatican.
    Is this evidence of the antichrist spirit, or the Holy Spirit? It is evidence of the antichrist spirit that has long been within her.
    Every generation has its demonic icons of wickedness. Madonna has set herself up as one of this generation's prime spectacles. At the same time, when interviewed, she posits herself as a loving mother, caring individual for the downtrodden, and "just your down-home girl."
    Madonna, wearing the title of Jesus' mother, Mary, has long ago condemned her own soul. In fact, the Bible informs us that we indeed will judge our own eternities before the White Light of Truth - Jesus. By our own acts, words and motives we ourselves at death will consign ourselves to eternal darkness or the blessed everlasting light.
    Jesus will sit there at the Judgment as a Secretary in the eternal court, taking note of our own consignments to the forever. That is how powerful the free will is within each mortal. God saw to it.
    One of these days, Madonna will leave this planet and her escapades of debauchery. Then with no audience, applause or bank account, she will stand as naked to the soul before the Christ who actually did stretch Himself out upon the cruel wood. In that timelessness, Madonna will pronounce her own everlasting.
    The Catholic Church has stated she should be excommunicated. They state she has left the faith for the devil's occult option - kabbalah - while enhancing her X-rated worldly career. Why she has not been excommunicated long before now is the mystery. Yet that is up to the logistics of that branch of Christendom.
    However, in the meantime, what the Bible states clearly is that she has already excommunicated her soul from God's grace by her own willful rebellious lifestyle. Unless she truly repents of her sin, publicly acknowledges her heartfelt contrition, and then lives the life of holiness by the Spirit of Jesus, she will continue to remain outside the loving heart of God.
    Christ cannot force His love upon anyone, including Madonna. Christ states that He stands at the soul door knocking, but the person must, by free will, open the door. To this moment, Madonna, by her mean display, has chosen to keep the door shut against Christ's love in holiness.
    She is in need of much prayer. If you feel moved by the Holy Spirit to intercede for her soul, please do so. Unless she yields completely to Christ, she is a lost soul now and forever.
From an Aussie news site:
While Madonna Resurrects Her Career... Deano Gets Sledged
Excerpt:
  • August 10, 2006
    .... The final inconsistency in all this is Christianity.
    Christians seem increasingly required to tolerate mockery and blasphemy.
    A man called Andres Serrano took the most holy of Christian symbols, the crucifix, dropped it in a beaker full of his own urine, photographed it and told us it was art.
    Some curators took him seriously and displayed it in a publicly funded gallery.
    Christians who objected were told this was also free speech. Imagine the reaction if similar offensive imagery was aimed at Muslims or Jews.
    Then this week a tired old tart of a singer who wants to be known simply as "Madonna" launched a series of world concerts called "The Confessions Tour".
    On stage she stuck a fake crown of thorns on her head, strutted provocatively around a garish cross and was raised on to it in a mock crucifixion.
    Many Christians were not happy. They didn't march in the streets. They didn't torch the theatre or demand that the choreographer be sacked.
    This was Madonna using an over-exploited, offensive gimmick to get attention.
    This wasn't art. It wasn't free speech and it does not seem to have had much to do with entertainment.
    It couldn't even be seen as a gaffe at the level of Dean Jones at a cricket match.
    This was far worse, but it barely raised a self-righteous grizzle.
    Why? Is it not possible to offend Christians?
    Or is it that many of them still believe in being able to turn the other cheek?
Madonna's "diabolical" Duomo ad to stay
Excerpts:
  • Aug 9, 2006
    By Ian Simpson
    MILAN (Reuters) - Is it appropriate for one of the Roman Catholic church's best known cathedrals to be draped with the giant picture of a pop artist who has made millions from hit songs about sex?
    Yes, according to the most senior priest at Milan's landmark Duomo who has rebuffed requests to remove a picture of Madonna as part of an advertisement for Swedish fashion chain Hennes & Maritz.
    .... "It's diabolical," said Albertina Santos, 53, the wife of an evangelical pastor from Verona, Italy. "This doesn't look right, it's not the right thing for a Christian."
    However, the Duomo's Monsignor Luigi Manganini told Italy's Ansa news agency that the ad -- part of money-raising efforts to restore the cathedral -- can stay and was appropriate.
Assuming that this t-shirt is based upon the "In God We Trust" motto found on American buildings and currency, I think you can understand why I put this story in this thread.
A fan made a shirt for Madonna which reads, "In Madonna We Trust," and it has an image of a cross on it. (Links to photos of shirt below)
I don't think Madonna's ego candles are working (why else would she wear this shirt and allow herself to be photographed wearing it?) Maybe she got the wrong kind of candle - the ego candles that give you a bigger ego?
From madonnalicious.com,
  • In Madonna We Trust: The story behind the tshirt
    Posted: 08 August 2006
    This weekend in Rome Madonna was spotted wearing a tshirt saying In Madonna We Trust - what many fans may not know is that this tshirt was designed by a fan!
    madonnalicious visitor and tour reporter Fernando Lemus of theory NYC, designed a tshirt to wear at the US shows. The tshirt said In Madonna We Trust, not only did this catch the eyes of many other fans, it also caught the eye of Madonna's team.
    I spoke to Guy Oseary at one of the New York City shows (see picture below of Fernando and Guy) whilst I was wearing this tshirt, and Guy, Liz Rosenberg and all her staff told me that Madonna would love it! I told Guy I wanted to make one for Madonna and I did ...
    I hand delivered the shirt to Guy Oseary at the Miami show and sure it enough, Madonna is wearing it!
If you look at the photo of Man-donna wearing the t-shirt, look at the person to her right (is that Guy Ritchie?) .
He's holding his hand over his nose/mouth as if to avoid getting any of Manny's cooties and crud :laugh:
All I will say is that it seems to say alot about these churches. And I thought she'd already been excommunicated, so it's stupid for anyone to even comment on her now (except for them to say something really dignified like, "Yawn. What else is new?")
I don't know if I should applaud this (a fan making money off Manny) or find it groody.
Since he doesn't use any images of Madonna on the shirt, I don't see how she could demand a cut of the profits off him.
I don't care if she trademarked the name "Madonna" years ago, I don't see how a court would take her side if she tried to sue this guy. The name "Madonna" is in wide usage (ie., mother of Jesus), so I don't see how any one person can legally claim that name all to her own.
madonnalicious.com:
  • More on the In Madonna We Trust tshirt
    Posted: 10 August 2006
    At the overwhelming request of fans the IN MADONNA WE TRUST tshirts may soon become available for purchase. Fernando has sent this message into madonnalicious in answer to all the queries we have received:
    Fernando runs a design company with his business partner.
    His design is copyrighted and is currently trying to work with management to gain permission to get these shirts accessible to the fans.
    The shirts will replica quality, fit and design (real swarvoski crystals). Please be aware of imposters trying to sell the design. I am the original and as a true admirer of M’s, will do my best to make this happen for all other fans....stay tuned!
I wonder if there really has been a huge demand for the design, of if the guy is just saying that to try and sell more shirts?
  • CNN Debates Madonna Controversy
    CNN's Paula Zahn led a debate on the Madonna Catholic Church controversy.
    Air America Radio Talker Stephanie Miller (www. stephaniemiller.com ) came out in defense of Madonna's artistic statement while the Catholic League made the shocking statement that Madonna would have her head cut off if she made a similar statement directed at Muslims!
    Read the transcript ( near bottom of page) at :
    Article published by Gugarko
Air America is a liberal radio station.
Whether Madonna's political gestures are genuine or not, the fact is she does rip on George W. Bush in public. This of course will endear her to Al Franken and the other liberals at Air America.
Re:
  • ... while the Catholic League made the shocking statement that Madonna would have her head cut off if she made a similar statement directed at Muslims!
Why is that shocking? It shouldn't be. The representative from the Catholic League was only telling the truth.
I guess these Manny fans haven't heard of Nick Berg? They may want to check out these threads at this board: I'll add that when I was watching Hannity and Colmes a few nights ago, that they discussed Man-donna.
I don't remember the particulars, but I think Colmes (who is a liberal) was discussing how Manny was inviting the Pope to her show in Rome or something. Colmes also observed that Manny gets attention because she manufactures controversy.
In regards to all this, Hannity (conservative) said,
"She's a has-been. Who cares what she thinks?" (aired on Aug. 7, 2006)
Throw her in jail! Throw her in jail!
Ah, but I predict that as usual, there's a double standard: it's verbotten to rip on any religion, except for Christianity (and sometimes Judaism). I'm still keeping my fingers crossed!
Prosecutors to Monitor Madonna Act [in Germany] - Christian Post
Madonna Headed for Das Big House?
Excerpts:
  • Should the pop star, who turns 48 Wednesday, perform the shock shtick, Johannes Mocken, a spokesman for the local authorities, told the Associated Press it could be construed as insulting religious beliefs, an offense that's considered not only insensitive, but illegal in Germany.
    If Madonna goes through with the Jesus-channeling act and the locals find it insulting, she could face a maximum sentence of three years in prison. Meaning, Madonna's next reinvention could be as an inmate.
Germans ponder legal action over Madonna's crucifixion stunt
  • August 15, 2006
    BERLIN (AP) - Prosecutors plan to keep an eye on Madonna's weekend concert in Duesseldorf to see if the pop diva repeats the mock crucifixion scene that has drawn fire from religious leaders.
    Johannes Mocken, a spokesman for prosecutors in Duesseldorf, said Tuesday that a repeat of that scene during Sunday's concert could be construed as insulting religious beliefs.
    Madonna, who is known for her theatrical, action-packed shows, wears a crown of fake thorns while performing on a mirrored cross.
    The stunt, which has been included from the outset of her worldwide Confessions tour, has been criticized as an act of hostility toward the Roman Catholic Church.
    Representatives for the singer, who will be 48 on Wednesday, have said the scene is not disrespectful toward the church.
    Mocken said authorities would rely on media reports rather than sending observers to the concert and that the show might be covered by laws protecting artistic freedoms.
    Earlier this month, religious leaders in Rome condemned the concert stunt. Some 70,000 fans attended Madonna's performance at Olympic Stadium, a few kilometres from the Vatican.
I so far have not seen any mention of this news on Drowned Grandma-donna.
Drowned Grandma-donna, is, however, carrying this (Source):
  • The union of [Russian] orthodox citizens is measured to involve rock-musicians in protest
    actions against show of Madonna in Moscow. The head of the Moscow branch and press-secretary Cyril Frolov has informed on it.
    "We address to authorities with the request to cancel a blasphemous concert of the Madonna. If us will not hear - it is necessary to picket. And then we are measured to involve in protest actions orthodox ÒÏËÅÒÏ× - Konstantin Kintchev, Jury Shevchyuk and others ", - Frolov has told.
    It does not exclude also carrying out rock-concert "in a counterbalance to a concert of Madonna at which the blasphemy is combined with platitude".
    Show of Madonna Cyril Frolov called " a striptease on the Cross " also has regarded as " desecration of the Sacred Cross and a rough call of Church ".
    The concert of the American singer in Moscow is planned for September, 11th when Russian Orthodox Church marks Cutting off of the chapter of John Krestitelja.
Why is Manny having a concert on the 5th anniversary of 9/11? How very tacky.
Observe how Drowned Grandma-donna entitled this blog page:
Madonna prepares to hit Moscow, meet Putin and religious fanatics
By "religious fanatics," the fans mean Russian orthodox.
Oh yes, I'm sure that the Russian Orthodox will be strapping bombs on themselves for suicide missions at Manny's show and flying a hijacked airliner into the concert hall as she's on stage. :rolleyes2:
Why is she meeting with Putin? Let me guess, during her show after she flashes Bush's photo, she's going to show his too.
Here are some excerpts:
  • .... The Russian Orthodox Church has established its position regarding the upcoming show after the Moscow stop of Madonna’s Confessions Tour was officially announced. Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin urged all Russian Orthodox believers not to attend the Madonna show in Moscow slated for September 11.
    .... An official spokesman for the Russian Orthodox Church stated that Madonna was gaining profit from the exploitation of religious symbols that is why her concert is not an event of attraction for the faithful. “This lady has been glorifying human passions with the help of religious symbols for years - crosses, statues and beads. Now she thinks it is time for her to crucify herself in public. It means that the singer is in need of spiritual help,” Chaplin said.
    .... Russian Muslims quickly supported their Russian colleagues. “This Madonna crucifixion does not match the traditions of our nations. Such things cannot be a decoration for such a person as Madonna,” Deputy Chairman of the Russian Council of Muftis, Damir Gizatullin said. “I think that the followers of Islam in Russia will not support Madonna’s show in Moscow and she will not enjoy the success that she is expecting,” he added.
    .... Spokespeople for the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia did not miss their chance to say something about the upcoming show of the global superstar too. “The performance of pop diva Madonna is out of the interests of a religious individual,” the press secretary of the Federation, Timur Kireyev said. As it turns out, the Jews are unhappy about Madonna’s interpretation of Cabbala. According to Kireyev, only men having religious education can study this teaching.
    Other church officials said that the pop star should be anathematized. It turned out later that the Russian Orthodox Church is unable to do it because Madonna does not follow Orthodox religion.
    .... Nothing has been said so far about the singer’s possible meeting with Vladimir Putin. However, it is rumoured that Madonna would personally like to meet the Russian president during her two-day stay in Russia.
    Based on the reports of Russian Internet media
The worst part of the above article, IMO, is this -
  • One has to acknowledge that the image of a priest turned into a symbol of rather boring morality long ago.
    The situation is absolutely different with a modern bestselling writer like Dan Brown or a super-popular singer like Madonna. Their messages seem to be much more understandable, demanding and valuable for the general public.
    Maybe it is not Madonna but the Church itself that needs spiritual help.
If this guy considers Dan Brown/ The Da Vinci Code/ liberal biblical studies on the same level as works by N. T. Wright, Bruce Metzger, William Lane Craig, and W.F. Albright, he must also find the back of a cereal box to be on par with War and Peace, or anything by Shakespeare.
Re:
Maybe it is not Madonna but the Church itself that needs spiritual help.
Er, dude, considering that Manny is taking symbols created and defined first by the Christian community and not the other way 'round, they are completely justified in ripping on Madonna and are quite right that she's either ignorant of the meanings of those symbols, or she's misusing them (or both).
You notice that many liberals or ignorant post-modern types (who don't believe in moral absolutes) will cry and whine when people use a Native American Indian as a football mascot, but they have no problems with people descerating Judeo-Christian imagery and beliefs.
~~ Aug 16, 2006 EDIT ~~
The media continue to crank out stories about this. I'll add only a few more of the latest links.
Oh please.  Like she even knows this - she just thought it would add an extra element of "outrageousness".  I actually got the impression that her original "ideas" for the video were even more crazy but Ms. Lambert (d*mn you!) toned it down just enough so that it wasn't banned before it even aired.
I just caught this one, and my first thought is...
Le what?
...and after that it was...
I bet she wanted to show herself having kinky S&M sex with the black saint.
Excommunication would at least be a start.
They should haul her up on charges, shave her head, and put her on a chain gang- she'll be the one assigned to lick all the toilet seats clean in the state pen.
Excommunication would at least be a start.
They should haul her up on charges, shave her head, and put her on a chain gang- she'll be the one assigned to lick all the toilet seats clean in the state pen.
The part about her having to lick toilets would be particularly hard on her, given the whole tour toilet demands thing.
Dutch religious party calls for Madonna ban over crucifix scene
  • Aug. 17, 2006
    Amsterdam - A minority Dutch Christian party that bases its policies on the Bible said Thursday it would apply to the government to have part of Madonna's act banned when she appears outside Amsterdam next month.
    The youth wing of the SGP said some of the US singer's act on her current European tour was blasphemous.
    The Dutch Justice Ministry said it could not act in advance. 'If someone lays a charge, we can take action subsequently,' a spokeswoman said.
    She suggested application to act against the concert should rather be made to the Amsterdam authorities.
    Earlier this week a German Catholic spokesman criticized the 47- year-old pop star over the crucifixion scene in her current act, expressing regret that it was impossible to ban it under German law.
    'If someone had tried to portray Mohammed this way, there would have been a revolt,' Manfred Becker-Huberti, spokesman for the Archdiocese of Cologne, said, ahead of Madonna's performance in Dusseldorf on Sunday.
    There were protests last week in Italy at the scene in which Madonna wears a crown of thorns and is raised on a cross during her Live to Tell song.
    Madonna is to appear at the Amsterdam Arena, a large stadium on the outskirts of the Dutch capital, on September 3 and 4 on the Dutch leg of her Confessions Tour. ....
^ See post above about the Dutch being ticked off at Manny.
In this next article, the author says that COAD was her first/only tour in Italy, which isn't correct.
I remember she made a DVD out of a stop in Italy for the Who's That Girl tour in the 1980s, and it was called Ciao Italia. Other than that one minor error, this article seems pretty good (I've only skimmed over it at this time).
After reading a bit more, I'm ready to copy some excerpts...
Madonna's Roman Outrage; an Unfit Facade
A Singer Crosses the Line, and a City Shrugs
Excerpts:
  • By Elizabeth Lev
    ROME, AUG. 17, 2006 (Zenit.org).- Blame it on the August heat, but I've been in high dudgeon all week.
    .... On Aug. 6, 2006, Rome was sacked. This time it wasn't by Visigoths running rampant though the streets, or by mercenary soldiers murdering and plundering.
    But the same blasphemous spirit that drove the Landsknechte to stable their horses in the Sistine Chapel permeated the city once more. This time, however, many Romans joined right in.
    .... Pathetically, Madonna at 47 remains stuck in the rebellious teen-ager phase. After 25 years of outrageous behavior, she still can't move beyond taking shots at the tradition that she could not have existed without.
    Perhaps the saddest part of the story, though, concerns the majority of Christians among the 70,000 who crowded into the concert venue that night. It is strange that no hint of disappointment, resentment or moral disapproval was voiced during or after the show.
    .... But what about the lay people? Strangely silent throughout. Pop culture is part of the secular world, a world that lay people in particular are called to evangelize.
    If lay people really want more "responsibility" in the Church, a good start would be learning to take responsibility for how their own actions affect the culture.
    Buying the tickets, the CD and the videos isn't neutral or harmless; it tells the world that Catholics don't take their own religion seriously.
    .... Madonna's Italian tour met quite a different reception from lay people in Milan.
    .... This time it was the lay people who rose to the occasion. Residents, neighboring townspeople and even tourists recoiled at seeing Madonna's face [in an advertisement for H & M] under the golden statue of the Blessed Virgin crowning the Cathedral of Milan.
