Madonna Not Nailed Over Crucifixion - by Gina Serpe
Aug 21, 2006, 8:30 AM PT
Looks like Madonna won't be crucified after all. At least, not offstage.
Just a week after threatening to press charges against the Confessions on a Dancefloor singer for her "insulting" mock-crucifixion concert routine, German prosecutors have decided against opening an investigation into the potential illegality of the pop star's act.
Last week, German officials in Duesseldorf threatened to monitor and possibly take legal action against Madonna if she went ahead with her Jesus-channeling performance during her Sunday concert.
.... Early Monday morning, however, Johannes Mocken, a spokesman for the prosecutors, told the Associated Press that no investigation would take place as, "hurtful to religious people" as the performance might have been, no crime had taken place.
There's a relief.
According to Mocken, the routine, which includes Madonna strapped to an elevated mirrored cross while donning a crown of thorns and crooning her 1986 ballad "Live To Tell," was covered by laws protecting artistic freedom.
She performed the routine in front of a sold-out crowd of 45,000 Sunday night, none of whom were the monitoring lawyers. The legal crew said they would not attend the show, but would rely on media reports and other first-hand accounts to determine whether or not the pop star had broken any laws.
As it turns out, they were the only ones concerned.
According to Deutsche Welle, German media reports found just one complaint of blasphemy lodged against the singer, which had been filed before the concert even took place.
Still, Madonna's not in the persecution clear just yet.
Just like in England, Russia and Italy before it, a group of German bishops is calling for a boycott on the "Hung Up" singer's remaining concert dates.
"I thought Madonna was better than this because she claims to be a religious person," Bishop Margot Kasmann told Germany's Bild am Sonntag paper. "But maybe the only way an aging superstar can attract attention is to offend people's religious sentiments."

Why is Liz Smith such a shill for Madonna? (This is from Drowned Madonna) - From Today's LIZ SMITH....

'MADONNA IS doing Christians a favor. She is performing a woman's right to stand in Jesus's place . . . as a Christian, I know that one of the most important spiritual tasks asked of me is to see the crucified Jesus in each and every person I encounter . . . it offends only because our imaginations are so impoverished."
So says teacher/author Donna Freitas, about the controversy of Madonna on the cross in her latest concert.
Freitas spoke on the NPR program "All Things Considered." (As the world knows by now, while suspended on the cross, wearing a twinkly crown of thorns, Madonna sings "Live to Tell." Images of AIDS-stricken African women and children flash on the giant screen above her.)
La Ciccone has insisted, "I don't think Jesus would be mad at me."
Well, I don't try to fathom what Jesus would think. But maybe being named Madonna gives you special privilege. Article published by jpasc24 on 2006-08-21
Regarding this commentary: - 'MADONNA IS doing Christians a favor. She is performing a woman's right to stand in Jesus's place . . . as a Christian, I know that one of the most important spiritual tasks asked of me is to see the crucified Jesus in each and every person I encounter
That really makes no sense.
In traditional Christianity, Christians are to be the servants of others, i.e., to offer aid, help, compassion, and so in that sense, Christians are supposed to be as Jesus.
Further, Christians are supposed to acknowledge that all people are made in the image of God, so in that sense one can say, 'I see Christ in other people; other people have value.'
However, as espoused by members of conservative Christianity, nobody can "stand in Jesus' place," because he was God incarnate, he lived a sinless life, and therefore made it possible to reconcile a sinful man to a Holy God.
Madonna is not sinless, and she's not God, but she's portraying herself in a manner that suggests she has both of those qualities, and that is what offends. (That and she's using the crucifixion as a cheap entertainment thrill, which debases and devalues it.)
Madonna has a long history of sacrilege that this Ms. Freitas seems completely unaware of (and not just concerning Christianity, but also Hinduism and Judaism, although Christianity has always been targeted by her the most).

Young Russian Orthodox believers protest Madonna concert - Aug 25, 2006
MOSCOW (AFP) - A dozen young Russian Orthodox believers have clashed with police on Moscow's Red Square while protesting an upcoming September 11 concert by Madonna in the Russian capital.
.... The protestors, members of an Orthodox Christian youth movement called Georgievtsy, wore yellow shirts reading "Madonna, go home!" in English on Friday.
Seven of the protestors were detained by police during the demonstration.
The pop superstar's September 11 concert "insults the religious sentiments of believers and the memory of those who perished five years ago in New York and incites terrorists to new attacks," the group's shirts read, refering to the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York's World Trade Center towers.
.... In spite of repeated protests by the Russian Orthodox Church, which accuses the singer of inappropriately exploiting Christian symbols, the concert sold out in four days.
In the kind of world we live in today, I'm not surprised her concert sold out despite the gross misuse of religious symbols in the show.
Police Detain Russian Orthodox Protesters of Madonna Concert
Excerpts: - Aug 25, 2006
Police have detained 10 Russian Orthodox activists, who distributed leaflets urging people to boycott Madonna’s concert in Moscow. The activists staged the protest in the center of the city near Red Square, Echo Moskvy radio reports.
The activists, dressed in yellow sport shirts with the inscription “Madonna Go Home!, claimed that the pop diva’s concert offends the feelings of believers. They plan to distribute 10, 000 leaflets calling people not to visit her concert.
Earlier this month Russia’s Orthodox Church accused the U.S. superstar of exploiting Christian symbols for her own ends.
"The U.S. singer Madonna exploits Christian symbols — the cross, rosary beads and the crucifix — and tries to equate human passions, including her own personal passions, with something sacred,” a spokesman for the patriarch of Moscow said.
.... Madonna will perform in Russia for the first time on September 11 as part of her “Confessions” world tour.
The pop diva will arrive in the Russian capital with 57 trucks and 200 tons of equipment in tow, organizers said.

Dutch minister can't ban Madonna mock-crucifixion - Sept 1, 2006
AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The Dutch justice minister has rejected a call by a Christian party to stop Madonna staging a mock-crucifixion in concerts in Amsterdam.
Minister Piet Hein Donner said he understood the concerns of the SGP party which asked the minister to prevent Madonna performing the scene in concerts on Sunday and Monday, but said only a court could take action against the show.
"It is understandable that Christians feel offended by the crucifixion act that Madonna performs," he said in remarks posted on the SGP website. "It is a reprehensible way to attract attention at the cost of the deepest feelings of many people."
"That does not mean that this act can be classified as blasphemy," he said. "Judgement over whether the event in question constitutes blasphemy is not up to the justice minister, but up to prosecutors and ultimately a judge."
The youth wing of the Christian party, the SGP, said they were deeply disappointed by Donner's response and said they would launch a suit against Madonna for blasphemy after her concerts in Amsterdam, part of her worldwide "Confessions Tour".
"The SGP youth wing regrets that the freedom of expression is declared as being so holy that insulting the Son of God is part of that freedom," it said in a statement.
The Vatican accused Madonna of blasphemy and provocation when she staged the mock crucifixion in Rome last month.
Madonna show upsets Dutch Christians
Excerpts: - .... But Dutch Christian groups say to them it's [Madonna's mock crucifixion] highly offensive and they want it stopped. Gert van Veldhuizen is from the youth section of the SGP Protestant Reformed party.
"In Holland we have an article in the law, Article 147 which says it is forbidden to do or say blasphemous things in the public domain when it shocks believers and we think this is happening in Madonna's show."
.... The party called on Dutch Justice Minister Piet Hein Donner (right) to ban the fake crucifixion scene, but their appeal fell on deaf ears with the minister saying he doesn't see any reason for a ban.
Bert Dorenbos is the from the Christian pro-life campaign group Cry for Life and he's decided to take his protest to the concert venue itself. He plans to hold a prayer vigil outside the Arena during the concerts and has also called on Christians throughout the country to join his protest.
For him the protest is taking on Biblical proportions.
"They say Madonna won't listen but they laughed at the protests outside the walls of Jericho," he said, "and after circling the city seven times the walls came tumbling down."
"We have emailed 40,000 churches in the Netherlands and have asked them to pray for Madonna during their weekend services."
Crucifixion By using the crucifixion scene Madonna is attacking the very heart of his belief, according to Dorenbos, but far from being angry with Madonna he says she needs help and forgiveness. Madonna fans though seem largely undisturbed by the commotion.

There's a photo below of these Russian guys poking a stake through a poster of Manny. They also were going to set it on fire, but the cops stopped them - I wonder why?
If only they'd blow up some of her really bad photos, like we've posted in the "Looking Ugly" thread and parade those around in public.
Russian Orthodox Drive Stake Through Madonna Photo - Mon Sep 4. 2006
MOSCOW (AFP) - Around 100 Russian Orthodox believers protested in Moscow against a concert to be given by the US singer Madonna, symbolically driving a stake through a picture of the superstar.
Speaking to protesters, the head of a radical Orthodox group, Leonid Simonovich-Nikshich, declared that Madonna was "under the influence of the devil".
"We are proclaiming a new holy inquisition against those who struggle against God," said Simonovich-Nikshich, who heads the Union of Orthodox Gonfaloniers, a name that alludes to Medieval Italian republics.
Organisers earlier changed the date and location of Madonna's first Russian concert, part of her "Confessions" tour, citing security concerns.
The Moscow concert will now take place on September 12 at the Luzhniki Olympic complex.
The tour, which features a mock crucifixion scene, has also drawn protests elsewhere, including from the archbishop of Prague.
At the latest in what has been a series of protests in Moscow protesters symbolically drove a stake through a photograph of the singer and attempted to set light to it before police intervened.
Carrying effigies of Jesus and of Orthodox saints they prayed and chanted "Anathema on the organisers of abominations".
"We will do everything possible to prevent this concert going ahead," said Simonovich-Nikshich.
The Orthodox Church has urged Russians to boycott the concert, accusing Madonna of "exploiting Christian symbols", but all tickets were sold almost immediately after coming on sale.

New Holy Inquisition Declared in Moscow to Fight Against Madonna - Sept 4, 2006
Orthodox and patriotic forces are meeting at Pushkin Square in downtown Moscow in a demonstration against Madonna’s forthcoming Moscow show.
Some 100 people holding banners and orthodox flags with large crucifixes placed in the center are participating in the meeting, Interfax reports.
“We declare a new Holy Inquisition that will fight against the sacrilege of crosses, icons, Russian Orthodox symbols, including during Madonna’s show. The singer is an advocate of Kabbalah,” chairman of the Union of Orthodox flag-bearers Leonid Simonovich-Nikshich said at the meeting.
The main goal of the inquisition will be “to fight against slander, rather than to kill people,” he said.
Previous union actions, including the burning of books by Eduard Radzinsky, protests against the “Children of Rosenthal” and “Rasputin” ballets were “of great spiritual success,” he said.
The Orthodox community will “do everything possible to prevent Madonna’s concert from taking place,” he said.
Representatives of patriotic organizations earlier asked the authorities to ban Madonna from staging an act whereby the singer mimics the crucifixion during the concert.
Meanwhile, Tuesday will see the delivery of the first part of Madonna’s equipment by trucks from Hanover, Germany, to Moscow. Madonna’s show is scheduled to take place at Luzhniki stadium on September 12. Some 53,000-54,000 are expected to attend the concert, promoters said.
Madonna tour protested in Russia
Excerpt: - The protesters in central Moscow carried signs saying "God Save Russia" and "With Belief in God, Freedom or Death!," RIA Novosti reported.
Christian Revival Union leader Vladimir Osipov called the performer an "American Satanist" and the "anti-Madonna," because her image was the complete opposite of the Virgin Mary's.
"I would like to see her abusing the religion of international bankers -- she would have immediately been cornered and sent back to the streets," he said.

From some guy's blog (there are more photos at this site):
Christians Tore Madonna Apart
The tone of the blogger's comments... he makes fun of these protestors.
I applaud them  Good for them on speaking out.
Excerpt: - There is a very funny sect of extreme Christians in Russia. They look really cool. They became popular for breaking up a Moscow gay parade this year, together with some radical Orthodox Christian priests.
At that time gay parade was canceled. That included a public speech of Moscow mayor who said something like “Moscow and Russia are not that liberal to allow this to happen”. You can imagine how far Moscow and Russia are liberal after that.
Now, from their point of view, which doesn’t differ from a point of a Russian Orthodox Church officials, Madonna shouldn’t have a concert in September, 2006 in Moscow. She simply doesn’t have any right for that, because from their point of view she is totally evil pop star.

The article below covers both Madonna's sacrilege and her habit of ripping off other people's ideas and so forth.
It never crossed my mind to regard Madonna's crucifixion scene in the COAD tour as a rip-off, but I guess it is. She is taking it from the Bible, as a man quoted in the article says.
In the Disco Cross number not only is Madonna wearing a red blouse, but she has some purple accessories with that outfit - I believe that her boots are purple.
Yeah, I just looked at some fan photos, and she even wears a purple jacket over the red blouse at one point, in addition to the purple boots.
As I noted in one post, Madonna's "crown of thorns" has some kind of red beads or jewels hanging from it.
Photo: Madonna in Crown of Thorns - it's a very large image, 1000 x 1430. Also in that photo, her face looks as though it has cellulite on it or something. Weird.
Madonna’ borrows scenario for her scandalous show from ancient Christian prophecy - newspaper - 05 September 2006
Moscow, September 5, Interfax - The scenario for pop star Madonna’s scandalous show has been cribbed from the Bible, the Zhizn daily reads.
The plot of her presentation coincides literally with what St. John the Theologian says in Chapter 17, verses 1-18 and Chapter 18, verses 8-10 about the great harlot of Babylon.
It is not accidental either that Madonna has given her tour the name of Confessions, the weekly notes.
The weekly gives this quotation from the Revelation of St. John the Theologian:
‘And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which was full of blasphemous names, and it had seven heads and ten horns. The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and bedecked with gold and jewels and pearls...’
Purple and scarlet are the main colours in the star’s show, and she wears a scarlet blouse in the enactment of the Crucifixion.
A key point in the concert is Madonna’s singing a song sitting on an imaginary horse or bull, a large black mechanical leather saddle moving under her like the back of an unknown beast.

I read somewhere that the name madonna is widely used in Canada. Look at madonna senior. Some lady was mentioning that quite some people she knew were named madonna...including her hairstylist who is 10 years older than mandonna herself. So how can she copyright it? hell, I am copyrighting Skyler.

Camille Paglia was the one who mentioned Manny getting her name trademarked or copyrighted or whatever when Manny was in her 20s.
Paglia cited that to make it seem as though Madonna is a genius or to point out how self-assured Manny was that she was going to be very famous.

Can't say as though I approve of folks issuing death threats and the like, but maybe this will make Man-donna wake up that her actions do have consequences; that you can't just carelessly and nonchalantly abuse people's religious beliefs and symbols for entertainment and publicity purposes.
(Or Man-donna can continue to live in this naive dream-world where this kind of thing is considered great free publicity.)

Priest admits Madonna bomb hoax - A 63-year-old Dutch priest has confessed to making a hoax bomb threat in an attempt to stop a concert by US pop star Madonna, prosecutors say.
.... A city official said the priest was arrested soon after making the call because he used his home phone.
Emergency services quickly traced the number.
The official, prosecutor's office spokesman Robert Meulenbroek, said that as this was probably the priest's first such offence, he was likely to receive a light sentence.
He has been released from custody pending a verdict.
"We take bomb threats seriously, but in this case it was clear very quickly that it was not real," Mr Meulenbroek told the Associated Press news agency. ...

Famous Russian theologian advises Madonna to watch The Passion of the Christ to reassess her crucifixion on stage - 11 September 2006
Moscow, September 11, Interfax - Madonna should watch Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ to understand why the crucifixion scene in her show is an insult to people, a professor at Moscow Church Academy, deacon Andrey Kurayev, told Interfax.
"It's amazing how backward some people can be in our times, especially in America Most probably, Ms. Ciccone hasn't seen The Passion of the Christ. I would be glad to send her a CD of it," father Andrey said.
After this film showed a strikingly naturalistic portrayal of the crucifixion and how painful it was, it could be thought that no more vulgarities of the "I am crucified by critics" or "I bear the cross of my creation" could be possible, he said. Hardly anyone who watched The Passion of the Christ would use a cross as a piece of jewelry, he added.
"From any point of view, even a secular one, a cross symbolizes supreme pain and it's not good to use it for a show. She [Madonna] uses other people's pain to create her image and earn money," father Andrey said.
Replying to those who think that Madonna has already secured a place in world pop music history, he said that the Church "does not care about assessments of her stage activity."
I especially liked the very last paragraph there, which I placed in bold-faced type.
As for wearing a cross as jewelry - I don't have a problem with that, as long as the person's motives are in the right place. If you're wearing it just as any other fashion accessory, I don't believe that's right.
Dutch Christians file complaint against Madonna - Published: 9/11/2006
THE HAGUE - The youth chapter of the protestant Dutch party SGP on Monday filed a legal complaint against the singer Madonna for blasphemy and insulting a religious group, the ANP news agency reported.
The group objected to a mock crucifixion scene featured in Madonna's European tour after the US pop star gave two sell-out concerts in Amsterdam this month.
Chairman Jan Kloosterman told ANP the complaint was supported by 50 different organisations.
Madonna's "Confessions" tour has also drawn protests from religious leaders in Moscow, where she is due to play on Tuesday, and from the archbishop of Prague.
Last Friday, a 63-year-old Dutch clergyman confessed to making a hoax bomb threat in an attempt to stop Madonna's concert because he objected to the crucifixion scene.

Young Christians accuse Madonna of blasphemy - 11 September 2006
AMSTERDAM — Young Christians have filed a criminal complaint in the Netherlands against pop star Madonna over the mock crucifixion routine during her Confessions Tour.
The complaint, lodged with the public prosecutor in Amsterdam, accuses Madonna of criminal blasphemy and of insulting a group of people based on their religious beliefs.
Jan Kloosterman, chairman of the youth wing of the orthodox party SGP, confirmed on Monday that the complaint is supported by approximately 50 organisations in the Netherlands.
The Christian group has been threatening legal action since Dutch Justice Minister Piet Hein Donner refused to impose restrictions on Madonna's performances at Amsterdam's ArenA stadium on 3 and 4 September.
Madonna has angered Christians in several European countries by hanging from a giant cross and wearing a crown of thorns during the song "Live to Tell".
Although he declined to intervene, Donner, a member of the Christian Democrat Party (CDA), said it was "understandable Christians felt offended" by Madonna.
Separately, a 63-year-old Dutch priest has been charged with phoning in a fake bomb threat in a bid to stop Madonna's concerts in Amsterdam. He was quickly traced and admitted the offence.
The concerts went ahead and Madonna's act included the performance on the cross.
A note to Tatyana Myasoyedova: We Americans do not like Madonna Ritchie either.
I, an American, apologize to you for Madonna's filth, sacrilege, her lousy singing and crummy acting - and for her show coming to your nation.
(If there's any way you can influence your government to stop supporting nations such as Iran, I would appreicate it. )
Russians divided over Madonna concert - MOSCOW, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- While Madonna arrived this week at Moscow's Vnukovo-2 Airport, Russian citizens debated the controversial singer's upcoming concert in the city.
When the 48-year-old singer takes the stage at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium Tuesday, it will not only mark the latest stop on Madonna's "Confessions" tour but also represent a change in the mindset of the once-communist country, said the Los Angeles Times.
"If you look at the people who stand in lines to buy tickets for her show you may notice that a big majority of them are in their 30s and 40s," Russian journal commentator Boris Lifanovsky said.
"Many of these people undoubtedly represent the emerging middle class of Russia, and this is also very indicative and very important. This is our first generation of free-thinking, open-minded and independent people."
While the fact that the original venue for Madonna's Moscow concert sold out in a mere three days indicates that the "Vogue" singer's popularity in Russia has increased dramatically, many there still look at her on-stage antics as deplorable, the Times said.
"The United States first destroyed our great country, the Soviet Union, then they destroyed our economy and now they are sending this horrible young woman to destroy our souls," protester Tatyana Myasoyedova told the Times.

~~EDIT BELOW ~~
Iron, I don't know if I should be posting this, but I thought you may dig it. I saw it posted at another board: Jesus Isn't Happy With You -- (IMAGE)
I edited the title. The actual image says something a little different. I could imagine you wanting to post this to Man-donna, Iron.
~~ Sept 17, 2006 EDIT ~~
Pay attention to the disco cross part at the bottom of this cartoon

- that cartoon is in French, which, of course, I don't read or speak, so I'm of no help there.

I thought this was kind of funny:
Madonna: 'If Jesus Were Alive Today He'd Also Be Charging $250 For Decent Seats' - With NBC being pulled from all sides over the crucifixion number in their upcoming broadcast of Madonna's Confessions Tour--the Catholic League on one side urging the network not to air what they interpret to be a reckless act of blasphemy, the Official Madonna Fan Club on the other insisting the entire disco-torture sequence would fall apart without it-- Madonna has finally spoken out on her exact intentions:
"This is not a mocking of the church. It is no different than a person wearing a Cross or 'Taking Up the Cross' as it says in the Bible.
My performance is neither anti-Christian, sacrilegious or blasphemous.
Rather, it is my plea to the audience to encourage mankind to help one another and to see the world as a unified whole. I believe in my heart that if Jesus were alive today he would be doing the same thing." At least she stopped short of entering the Beatleseque territory of bragging that her crucifixion managed to out-fierce Jesus's own: Yes, plain ol' wood and nails could never compete with reflective mirrored-tiles and state-of-the-art lighting and digital projections, but there's no need to gloat about it.
Instead, she took that old cliché--"What would Jesus do?"--and went the extra step of actually doing it, a theme she returns to repeatedly throughout the evening, such as when she enacts the Son of Man's millenia-old wishes to don S&M-flavored bridle gear while humping a pole-mounted saddle.

Someone wake me when Madgezilla kisses Mohammed at the Wailing Wall in her next video. Anger from the Vatican is hardly groundbreaking. 09/22/06 01:39 PM ----- valet_of_the_dolls says:
Jesus would have starred in a remake of "Seven Beauties", not "Swept Away"; otherwise, she's sooo right. 09/22/06 03:30 PM ----- raincoaster says:
C'mon! Jesus wouldn't have given Warren Beatty the time of day! 09/23/06 02:00 AM

^ That dancing .gif would also be good in the Dancing thread. Even I could do those moves. All she's doing is twirling around in a circle while holding on to the hem of her dress.

I hadn't even notice that 'til you mentioned it. You're right! It's like she's not even there
(P.S. - I'm surprised that her body odor didn't knock them out.)
