~~ EDIT BELOW ~~

I haven't watched the Grammys in a billion years. This definitely won't make me want to tune in (although animated gorillas might be fun to watch).

The Access Hollywood article refers to Man-donna as "legendary artist, Madonna." I don't think she's either legendary or an artist.

From Access Hollywood:
  • POSTED: 8:22 am PST February 1, 2006
    Access Hollywood breaks the news that five-time Grammy winner Madonna and Grammy nominee The Gorillaz are performing together at the upcoming Grammys on February 8, 2006.

    It has been reported that the unique combination of legendary artist, Madonna and the ground-breaking animated band, The Gorillaz will open the show together.

    Known for their animated videos, The Gorillaz will appear as live, holographic animation -- the first time this has ever been done on network TV.
~~~ EDIT ~~~
From Madonna Tribe
  • MadonnaTribe has heard some exciting and exclusive news about the opening number at the Grammy ceremony.
    Gorillaz with De La Soul will actually open the show with the song "Feel good inc" and right after them the Queen of Pop will do "Hung Up".
    So it's not Madonna with The Gorillaz, it's the other way around but everything will look and sound amazing as both songs are mixed together. Madonna has been rehearsing this performance for the whole past two weeks with the "Gorillaz people" in London.
    Recent candids of her all dressed up and looking amazing are from those rehearsals and not from a new commercial nor a video.
Also from Madonna Tribe
  • Madonna and Gorillaz - who both caused separate sensations at last November's MTV Europe Awards - will appear for an onstage duet at the Feb. 8 Grammys, Liz Rosenberg told People magazine.
    "They are Grammy-nominated," the singer's rep says of the virtual group comprised of four fictional animated band members: 2D, Murdoc, Noodle and Russel.
    "Madonna really likes them, and they like Madonna. They are going to do something together."
    Rosenberg would not reveal the number to be performed, but said: "It's going to be stupendous. Another Madonna showstopper."
    Gorlillaz, conceived by Blur's Damon Albarn and drawn by Jamie Hewlett (the creator of the cult comic Tank Girl), scored four Grammy nods, including record of their year for their song "Feel Good Inc." They're up against Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together," Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" and Kanye West's "Gold Digger."
    As for what prompted Madonna to share the stage with, well, cartoon characters, Rosenberg says: "She likes them. She's promoting her album. She's won a lot of Grammys. It seems like a wonderful opportunity for her."
:laugh: I am assuming it's that toon band Gorillaz. I have to admit I'm not that familiar with this animated, hip hop/ska/ metal band. They are not that well known in the US as they are in Britain.
With all the cosmetic changes she's undergone, I'm surprised Manny still hasn't changed those creepy, caterpillar eyebrows. They're just crying out for a tweezers and bleach job. Very, very disturbing. :o
I heard that Manny's next publicity stunt will be at the Grammys: forcing herself on one of the toon girls.
This wasn't flattering for Madonna. This article is saying that "older" acts such as Madonna can no longer hold down a Grammy show on their own, so they have to be paired with younger acts.
Mind you, I do not myself think that 47 - 48 years old is "over the hill," but I can see how a 47 year old trying to act or dress like a 21 year old (like Madonna does) looks pathetic to everyone, especially in the pop music business.
Grammy artist pairings a desperate gimmick
  • Feb. 8, 2006, 12:44AM
    By MICHAEL D. CLARK
    There's something about the performance gimmicks planned for the 48th annual Grammy Awards tonight that feels a little desperate.
    As Kanye West, John Legend and Mariah Carey — the three top nominees with eight each — spent two months preparing their acceptance speeches for an inevitable windfall of golden Gramophones, Grammy organizers had their own set of thank-yous to figure out.
    Specifically, how does the recording industry continue to recognize pop and mainstream rock, its bread and butter for 45 years, when the artists making those styles of music are taking fewer turns at the dais?
    The preferred solution, evident tonight, appears to be renting the veterans stage time with younger acts who frequent the winners' circle.
    In other words, awkward performance pairings.
    Tonight's show will start with a whopper. Madonna's latest album, Confessions on a Dance Floor, was released too late for Grammy consideration. And after strong first-week sales, it quickly cooled off.
    She's a strange choice to open the show with the Grammy-nominated Gorillaz, a hip, post-modern electronic-rock outfit of cartoon characters cloaking musicians, including Blur's Damon Albarn.
    .... Veteran rock/pop acts, it seems, need a dash of rap or R&B to make it in today's Grammy show.
    "I don't know if people are so into awards shows anymore. They all seem to be the same show," says Madd Hatta, the host of the morning show at radio station KBXX, 97.9 FM. "If you want me to watch, you better do something different."
    The Grammys have taken some progressive steps in recent years by acknowledging rap and R&B, which represent a large portion of music sales in this country.
    .... In 2004 and 2005, six of the 10 record-of-the-year nominees were either by rappers or artists collaborating with rappers, but still no golden awards.
    Look for that to change tonight. If West's Gold Digger — far and away the top single of 2005 — doesn't beat out challenges from Carey, Green Day, Gwen Stefani and the Gorillaz to take record of the year, many people, the outspoken West included, will say the fix is in. Others will just concede that the Grammys remain out of touch.
    Then it might take more than pairing rock stars with hip urban artists for the Recording Academy to make amends.
~~~~~ EDIT ~~~~~~~

I bet the fan sites (which I haven't visited today) have gone bonkers over this:

Which one is Madonna...the topless one in the white trousers? Looking at that pic reminds me of a very bad circus act. I didn't even have to catch her lame performance to guess that one.

A Manny fan probably already has a copy burned onto a DVD and for sale on EBAY, as 'Rare, Once In a Lifetime performance.'

I feel sorry for Manny's dancers. Whatever she's releasing, must be horribly gaseous. She's probably so branned out. That stage will need major fumigation.

I'm sorry, Anna. You may want to cover your eyes and not look at the following photos. :laugh:

Before I get to the photo(s):

Oh hey, anyone else notice the article I pasted in from a p.r. release from the "Period Corest" company, where they mentioned that Madonna was wearing one of their corsets on the outside of her costume?

Remember Madonna got big back in the 1980s mainly from wearing underwear (bras and bustiers) as outer-wear, so isn't she ripping herself off? Again?

The fan sites have already posted images from the Grammys. "Drowned Madonna" has several blog entries with more photos, some of which 1Nf has already posted, located here , here, and here.

Of course, Madonna Tribe had to publish photos from the Grammys as well (mostly the same batch of photos as can be seen on 'Drowned Madonna,' from Yahoo News / Reuters):

I just watched it - a mediocre repeat of her MTV Europe appearance. What exactly does she do, anyway?? She stands there on stilts in an outfit that leaves nothing to the imagination and just reeks of desperation. Her dancing consists of posing with her hip jutted out and shaking her booty. The other dancers were the ones who did the moves. And when she strutted out in front to focus on her singing, you could here her trying to project herself and show she is not lip-synching and using the amateurish vocal tricks she used while doing Evita, but then she gets to "You'll wake up one day"... then she turns around and walks back to the dancers and you hear " But it'll be too late", yet she takes the microphone away from her mouth to make a movement with her her arm, but you still hear "too late" in the same pitch. Oops. Too early is more like it..

I guess the beginning was animated because she rises from under the stage wearing the same outfit but no battery pack around her waist for the mike and either full stockings or bare legs. Then when she emerges again, she is clearly wearing stockings that cut below the knee and she has a battery pack and some chains purple chains or something hanging on the right side of her corset.

I missed viewing the show too and you know what? I really don't care. Tired old ceremony with same tiring results. Nothing worthy of anticipation in my mind. You would think that the Grammy organizers would have learned from the 2004 MTV Video Awards that having Madonna as the opener won't generate feverish excitement (more like disgust at lame, desperate acts for publicity). On the other hand, it may be fitting that Madonna should be head of such a borefest that hundreds of thousands--if not millions--deliberately avoid. Personally, I think Usher is a better dancer that would get my attention (actually, I believe he DID perform a dance number with a troupe of dancers at some award show and it was very cool).

And those granny stockings? Not flattering at all. :rolleyes2:

More reviews/ observations about this year's Grammy's -

And the Winners Are... Performers on the Show - LA Times

Excerpts:
  • Feb 8, 2006
    By Charles Duhigg

    When it comes to tonight's Grammy Awards, the savviest musicians know winning isn't everything. Playing on TV is.

    Every year, music executives line up to threaten, beg and cajole the producers of the Grammy telecast, all in the hopes of winning their artists a few minutes of on-air performance time.

    The reason: More than taking home a trophy, jamming on national television can send your career into the stratosphere.

    After the sultry-voiced newcomer Joss Stone performed on last year's award show with Melissa Etheridge, she lost in all three categories in which she was nominated: best new artist, best pop vocal album and best female pop vocal.

    Nevertheless, sales of Stone's albums increased 94% the next week, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

    "Getting a performance on the Grammys is absolutely more important than winning an award," said Gary Borman, who manages the careers of country singers Faith Hill and Keith Urban...

    .... Many of those artists will perform for only a few minutes or will share the stage with other musicians, a rare concession for big stars.

    "Sometimes managers argue that their artists deserve the stage to themselves," Ehrlich [Grammy telecast's producer for more than two decades] said.

    "But because we control access to the largest musical audience in history, managers usually end up seeing things my way."

    Jason Flom, president of Virgin Records, was happy to see things Ehrlich's way this year.

    One of Virgin's Grammy nominees, the Gorillaz, was already booked on the show when Madonna's publicist contacted Ehrlich to discuss an on-air role for the Material Girl. Ehrlich proposed pairing the Gorillaz, a "virtual band" that performs via animated projections, with Madonna for the opening number.

    "This will introduce the band to a whole new type of fan," Flom said. "I couldn't say yes fast enough."

    Almost everyone agrees that executives are saying yes to Ehrlich faster than they used to. As record sales decline, the desire to boost careers with a Grammy performance has become more desperate, executives say. Now, the labels need Ehrlich more than he needs them.

    "At the end of the day, we hold most of the cards," Ehrlich said.

    But music executives say when you've got a top-flight act, lobbying still can work.

    One label head, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that when he learned that his top-selling, Grammy-nominated singer was slated to perform for only two minutes on this year's show, he called Ehrlich.

    "We explained that the singer had sold millions of albums, and they came back with 2 1/2 minutes," said the label executive, who declined to be named for fear of alienating Ehrlich. "We argued that other artists with fewer accomplishments were getting more airtime. That got us another 30 seconds. We fought tooth and nail, kept pushing again and again, and eventually we got a whole song."

Then there was the black bra under lacy top in "Desperately Seeking Susan," black bras as outerwear worn in numerous photo shoots, white corsets/bustiers etc. at film premieres and awards shows, etc.

Madonna also went through a black bustier phase around 1986/87 when she was promoting the "True Blue" record.

She wore some ugly, tacky white undergarment as outerwear to the Cannes film festival in the 1990s.
