It is being reported that the DVD of M's silly documentary is going to include the Director's Cut of "American Life" (I think we can assume this was the one she was originally afraid of getting Dixie-Chick'd over). I guess everything is "safe" for her now that it's post-Michael Moore time.

One thing I find very annoying about her "controversial" videos / comments / lyrics (whatever) - sometimes she (seems to intentionally) makes them ambiguous or rather vague.

She just tosses in references (visual or spoken / sung) to teen pregnancy, crucifixes, tossing grenades on to a Bush Jr. look-alike, etc, but sometimes it's not altogether clear (at least not to me) how it is she's insulting those people or things, or why she's doing it -

- she thinks just using them in a video or something suffices to hack people off.

In her '88 or '89 video, LAP, she goes into a church and kisses a black man who was previously a statue of a saint.

She also danced in front of a bunch of burning crosses at another point in the LAP video.

At that time when the video came out, I was about 18 years old, and I got that she was wanting me to be offended by all that. However, I didn't understand why, or what it was I was supposed to get worked up over.

Was I supposed to find it scandalous that a white chick was kissing a black dude? That a skanky 'ho was kissing a saint?

I understood that the KKK used to burn crosses in the front yards of black people in the USA decades ago, but in her video, the crosses are just there.

No men in white hoods are shown lighting them afire in the video, so I'm like, okay, I guess these are just supposed to be props, for visual interest? Or what?

Is she expecting me to add up -

black saintly guy +
kissing white bimbo +
burning crosses
= racial overtones,

over which I'm supposted to get worked up? In the end, to me, it was just a bunch of jumbled imagery tossed together.

I think that the use of imagery that has something to do with something controversial (such as a burning cross or crucifix) was offensive to people in the 1980s, but she's been doing this for so long now, I think most people yawn over her "controversial" stuff these days.

Didn't she have a line in one song on AL that went, "I'm not a Christian, I'm not a Jew." - it was as though just mentioning those subjects (or just the words), she was hoping to offend people.

In the original video for "American Life," wasn't she shown on top of a tank or something, but the firearms / turret (whatever it was) she used on the crowds shot water, not ammo?

If you're going to be truly controversial, then use ammo. Show the blood and guts.

If you're going to toss a grenade on to Bush Jr. (which turns out to be a cigarette lighter), why not make it a real grenade and show him getting blown up?*

- when I say "real," I mean make it look real to the television audience, but obviously, it's all done with special effects and props; I'm not suggesting that the actual actor playing Bush Jr. should literally be blown up.

* Maybe because the FBI would investigate her for making a kind of threat to the Prez.

In the LAP video, she also gives herself stigmata. I remember thinking she had some kind of a Jesus complex and gets horny in church. It was like, now I know for sure that she is crazy!
