Related thread: Manny fans & the H&M flop -- EDIT BELOW --
Maybe these kinds of things could go in the "Not a Material Girl, eh?" thread.
Madonna in talks to model for Hennes & Mauritz - Stockholm - American pop star Madonna was reported to be negotiating a modelling contract with Swedish clothes retailer Hennes & Mauritz, reports said Wednesday.
Stockholm tabloid Expresssen reported on the talks with the controversial diva, but H&M spokeswoman Kristina Stenvinkel did not confirm the report.
'We like to surprise our customers,' Stenvinkel said according to Expressen.
Expressen said Madonna had a 'soft spot' for Sweden noting that she has sampled ABBA in her hit Hung up, and seen the musical Mamma Mia several times and also collaborated with Swedish director Jonas Akerlund.
Previous models include pop star Kylie Minogue, Claudia Schiffer, Sophie Dahl and Cindy Crawford.

Pop diva Madonna has joined up with Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) and will star in the Swedish fashion retailer’s upcoming advertising campaign, as reported by mad.co.uk last week.
The deal sees H&M supply a complete off stage wardrobe for the touring troupe of Madonna’s Confessions world tour and will include an advertising campaign featuring the star and her dancers.
.... Other aspects of the collaboration will include a specially designed Madonna track suit, which will be available in H&M stores in mid-August.
Commenting on the deal Madonna said: "Partnering up with H&M feels like a perfect fit. We'll all get to express ourselves in our own individual ways. The dancers and I are excited to go shopping together.” H&M head of design Margareta van den Bosch said: “This is a thrill for H&M. Aside from being great fans of Madonna's music and fashion sense, we admire her ability to always be ahead of the trends in everything she does.
“We look forward to seeing how her touring family translates H&M's seasonal trends to their own personal looks.” Madonna has previously starred in advertising campaigns for fashion houses including Gap and Versace, for which she did the “Four Seasons” campaign last year.

Expressen said Madonna had a 'soft spot' for Sweden noting that she has sampled ABBA in her hit Hung up, and seen the musical Mamma Mia several times and also collaborated with Swedish director Jonas Akerlund.
Did anyone gag at the above comment? A "soft spot" for Sweden because she used an ABBA music sample, seen an ABBA-inspired musical and worked with a Swedish person? Wow, that's really stretching it. How lame and superficial can one be? She always turns up the charm and claims an affection for someone/someplace when she wants to USE them for her agenda...but you never hear of it again afterwards. The flattery tactic is tiresome and shallow.
I wonder if she has a "soft spot" for some Latin American country because she screwed so many Hispanic guys throughout her career or perhaps had an overworked, underpaid nanny that was born in that region. Or maybe, she has a friend of a friend of a friend who knows Angelina Jolie and thus makes her have a "soft spot" for Namibia, Ethiopia or Cambodia.
Honestly, there are times her desperation for cash and media attention makes me laugh. I'm still disgusted at the thought seeing Madonna's mug at local H&M stores (and I really like the selection they have there). Is there any place that's safe from Madonna's contamination??

She always turns up the charm and claims an affection for someone/someplace when she wants to USE them for her agenda... In the past, she's sucked up to France and Britain.

I love the poll at the bottom of the first article.
If her H&M designs are anywhere near as tacky as The English Roses kiddie clothing line, I think I'll vote for "No, it will look like crap."

H&M Madonna deal not seen having material effect - from Reuters UK - June 9, 2006
By Simon Johnson
STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Swedish clothing giant H&M's deal to dress pop diva Madonna on her current tour could help the firm's image long-term, but is unlikely to materially affect sales, analysts said on Friday.
H&M is to provide a complete off-stage wardrobe for Madonna, famed for her risque stage outfits, and will also kit out her band and dancers on the tour, which opened in May. The group will sell a specially designed Madonna track suit from mid-August.
.... "I have looked at the last two or three campaigns they have organised, and as far as I can see they have had very little impact," said Henrik Schultz, analyst at Danske Bank.
He said the deal would contribute to a "smartening up of the brand" in the longer term, but that the effect would be very hard to quantify.
"They are quite good at getting these celebrity deals in place; it is a slight positive. Still, it does not take attention away from the current bad sales figures," said Christian Nagstrup at Jyske Bank.
.... Anna-Karin Envall, analyst at Handelsbanken, was more upbeat, saying the Madonna deal got H&M wide press coverage.
.... A report from the Swedish Trade Federation predicted a strong retail performance in Sweden due to strong economic growth and annual rebates from the tax office.

See Also: The Old "Ageism" Defense thread. ----- Swedish Clothiers H&M Confess Madonna Was A Material Mistake - The Post Chronicle- Swedish Clothiers H&M Confess Madonna Was A Material Mistake by Tashi Singh
Jun 15, 2006
Time waits for no man, or in this case, no woman, as clothier giant H&M finds itself getting snickered at for tapping the aged pop queen as their celebrity endorser, according to a report in Page Six.
At 47, maybe it's time the Material Girl hung up the pointed boobs and g-strings, and stopped making an old fool of herself.. much like the female version of a gold-chained, mustachioed, leisure-suit-wearing geezer whose been hanging at the clubs 20 years too long.
H&M had agreed to supply all the outfits for Madonna as she embarked on her 2006 "Confessions" tour, but because of her age and the apparent lack of interest in her tired act by H&M's younger, hipper teenaged customers, the clothier isn't about to make any money off their investment.
H&M is getting second-guessed for tapping Madonna as its new celebrity endorser "not because she's too edgy for the teen fashion chain, but because, at 47, she's too old," says Page Six.
"These kids trade in stars every two or three years, and many don't know Madonna," ad legend Jerry Della Femina told them. In a veiled jab at the fact Madonna is an old lady now herself, Femina suggests mature women's store, Loehmanns, as a better choice: "I could see her signing up with Loehmann's, I can't see her with H&M."
Madonna's spokeswoman, Liz Rosenberg, reportedly told Page Six: "I defy any 18-year-old to do a quarter of what Madonna does on stage. I hope Jerry Della Femina takes a nice pill."
Who cares? She could fly across the ceiling or leap tall buildings at a single bound, she's nonetheless old and looks it.
The nail in the coffin is that Madonna has frankly burned out her sex-toy public persona, and nobody takes her seriously in spite of her acquired British accent and managers. It's all a sham.
And plastic surgery isn't making an impact anymore... her face looks lined and brittle... as does the skin stretching across her back muscles in her horse-love video. Ewww.

THAT was AWESOME! Looking like an old lounge lizard hanging out in clubs searching for lost youth, that was good! I love Liz. So what? She can bend a leg behind her head, it doesn't mean she's young, hip, and popular.Business is business, and if a company wants a younger symbol, it's their choice. Madonna is nothing but a Company anyway herself. I love how, when someone really sticks it to the Skank, she or Lies says something like, "they should be nice." Hey Lies, how about telling your boss to be nice for once and stop flipping off fans, cussing them out, and trashing people's beliefs? Maybe your slutty boss should take a Nice Pill. Get used to the criticisms, Lies, they are coming...and quick. She looks like a desperate old disco cow.

You know what this reminded me of? Remember the cartoon, I think it was from the late 70s or early 80s, a Bugs Bunny Halloween, or something like that? They show it every year with the Charlie Brown Great Pumpkin cartoon. Bugs is up against Dracula. I forget which is which, but "Abracadabra" turns Drac into a bat, and "Hocus Pocus" turns him back. Bugs yelled "Abracapocus" at Drac and he turned into a head with wings. If you've never seen it, it's funny looking. Someone must have put a spell on Skanky, because I can picture her with those pointed teeth, red eyes, and bat wings coming out of her head.

Yuk yuk, har har. At least the "humor" didn't involve any vulgarities or references to sex or bodily functions.
Drowned Manny - Commercials
Madonna promoting her H&M commercial.
Madonna has started promoting H&M commercials on the radios.. You can hear Madonna's voice saying:
"This is Madonna...I figured out what H&M stands for. It stands for ''Her Majesty''. Isn't that nice of H&M thinking about me?"
Then they talks about the H&M contest.
Special thanks to Ray. Written by Giampiero on 2006-06-19
Man-donna Tribe is also carrying the same story.
They're even more anal-retentive about describing this ad than the folks at Drowned Manny.- Z100 in New York City is one of the U.S. radios playing a brand new H&M ad, by Madonna herself - that goes something like this:
("Get Together" playing in the background) "Hi, this is Madonna. Do you know what H&M stands for? I finally figured it out. H&M stands for "Her Madjesty". Wasn't that sweet of them?"
Then an announcer comes in and starts talking about the contest to win tickets for the tour. Madonna comes back and says "See you at my show!". a few more lines of "Get Together" play and the ad fades out.

(I really didn't feel like starting a new, separate thread for advertising she has refused to do, so here we are) -
Some stories are saying that Man-donna has turned down a deal to do an advertisement for a sex and diet pill.
MADONNA 'TURNS DOWN MILLIONS' FOR SEX PILL AD- 2006-06-20
Pop superstar MADONNA has reportedly turned down $3.6 million (£2 million) to promote a new diet and sex pill.
The MATERIAL GIRL declined an offer put to her by a UK firm to advertise the Slimnsexy tablet, which it is claimed aids weight loss while increasing libido. Company boss JAMES DIXON tells British newspaper the Daily Star, "We thought it wasn't bad for 10 minutes' work.
"But it was deemed too raunchy for her new lady-of-the-manor image. "It seems basques and crucifixions are OK but talking about her sex life isn't."
Madonna Turns Down £2Million Advertising Deal For diet pills - Entertainmentwise - By: Lowri Williams on 6/20/2006
Queen of pop Madonna reportedly turned down a £2million deal to promote a new diet/sex pill.
UK firm, Slimnsexy were hoping that £2million would be enough to tempt the Material Girl, but it turns out that Madge was not prepared to promote the diet pill that also increases the libido.
Company boss James Dixon told the Daily Star: "We thought it wasn't bad for 10 minutes' work.
"But it was deemed too raunchy for her new lady-of-the-manor image.
"It seems basques and crucifixions are OK but talking about her sex life isn't."

Too bad, she could have taken the cash, done an ad working in something about a hightened libido and sucking Bush's parts, had the ad pulled ala Pepsi, and cha-chinged all the way to the bank. Since when does she NOT want to talk about sex? Is she finally drying up due to menopause?

She's probably kicking herself now as she reads that. And here all she was concerned about is that people would think she is "fat" and has no libido, LOL...
Did ya see this comment?

Bet they never presented this to the woman . They just want straight to the press with a made up story that would get their product name out there without having to pay for her actual endorsement. Smart. But she will find them and kill them by making them watch her films.

In light of quotes such as this next one, why would GAP, H&M, or anyone else want to hire her for clothing ads?
From (Madonna - Chill Vault): - [Madonna]: "I don't want people to dress like me anymore. Now, I want them to think like me. Dress like Britney Spears and think like me, and everything will be fine".

So there's really not much profit (literal and figurative) that companies can get from using people like Man-donna in their ads.
Fashion Designers Return to Supermodels - Wall St. Journal
Okay, you have to have an online subscription to view that article - I have a hard copy of WSJ, but I don't know what my password is.
I'll type up some excerpts from the article.- July 26, 2006
Wall Street Journal > Marketplace
Celebrity Fatigue?
By Racheal Dodes and Cheryl Lu-Lien Tan
Italian fashion house Versace SpA is practically synonymous with celebrity ads: In 1985, Prince appeared with the word "slave" scrawled across his face. Last year, Demi Moore lounged in a cleavage-baring halter dress; Madonna perched on a glass desk in a tight taupe shirtdress.
For fall, in a move likely to be widely watched in the fashion hothouse, Versace is planning another provocative advertising move: using professional models.
But not just any models.
Christy Turlington, Kate Moss and Carolyn Murphy will grace the new Versace ads in September issues of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Elle, wearing minidresses, A-line coats, black leggings and patent-leather boots.
"This is the new angle for today," says Dontella Versace, creative director of the fashion house, who says she watns to draw attention to her creations, rather than to the celebrities who wear them.
Louis Vuitton, owned by LVMH Moet Henessy Louis Vuitton, is also returning to supermodels, after relying on actresses Jennifer Lopez, Christina Ricci, Scarlett Johansson and Uma Thurman in recent years. Gisele Bundchen stars in its spring ad campaign, and Ms. Moss, Ms. Campbell and Daria Werbowry appear in the fall campaign, which launches this month.
.... The pendulum's swing back to models reflects what some fashion marketers are calling "celebrity fatigue": A-list entertainers are so overexposed that "there is a major lack of trust," says Milton Pedraza, chief executive of the Luxury Institute, a New York consulting firm.
It also underscores the tension between serious fashion magazines and celebrity books like People, USWeekly, Star and InStyle that increasinbly feature pages of head-to-toe red carpet shots of celebrities sporting designer fashions.
"Ten years ago, having a celebrity in your ad would class it up," says Robert Thompson, founding director at Syracuse University's Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture. "Now, there's something cheesy about it ... There are so many celebrities on so many magazines all the time."
The return of the supermodel also follows some celebrity-ad bellyflops. This summer's multimillion- dollar campaign for St. John Knits Inc. starring Angelina Jolie hasn't plumped up the brand's sales and may ever have alienated core customers, marketing experts say. Officials at the company weren't available for comment.
Gap Inc's three-season contract with Sarah Jessica Parker, which started in 2004, seemed like a smart move at first, but by the time the campaign's third season rolled around, the series "Sex and the City" had ended, and consumers grew tired of the ads. A GAP spokeswoman declined to comment.
.... Still, style experts say that models convey a fashion gravitas and sophistication that screen actresses don't. "They're specifically related to fashion," says Sally Singer, fashion news features director at Vogue, which mostly used models on its cover until 2000, when the magazine started featuring mostly actresses, partly because readers began identifying with celebrities more.
The shift back to supermodels also involves practical considerations Actresses, as a rule, can demand several million dollars for a single campaign. Supermodels can get $1 million for two campaigns - spring and fall - for the same client in a year. Celebrities often demand more creative control and are difficult to schedule, since they are often juggling movie shoots or tours.
Models can also be easier to work with, says Ivan Bart, senior vice president of IMG Models, which represents actresses and models such as Carolyn Murphy, Kate Moss and Shalom Harlow. "They're professionally trained to be photographed incredibly well, as opposed to someone who's trained to be an expert on acting," he says. "They know which camera angels work."
And models are also more timeless.
"People are getting afraid that actors are only as hot as their last movie or TV show," says Faith Kates, founder of Next Model Management, New York, who expects her firm to see a 15% to 20% increase in revenue this years as a result of supermodels' return. Besides, she adds, "models don't show up with an entourage."
.... Interestingly, the fashion industry has shied away from models for so long that advertisers seeking a well-known face have to go back to supermodels like Ms. Turlington or Naomi Campbell, says Sean Patterson, president of Wilhelmina Models, New York. "The industry hasn't allowed a new set of supermodels to be created," he says.
One exception is the 22 year old Daria Werbowy, who is set to appear in upcoming Versace ads. ...

H&M Madonna Campaign Seen Lifting Aug Sales - I can't imagine why, unless this campaign was in Europe. Does H&M even have stores in the USA?
Anyway:- August 16, 2006
[Dow Jones] Hennes & Mauritz's (HM-B.SK) August sales are seen boosted by an advertising campaign featuring Madonna, says Cheuvreux Nordic, after sales growth in July of 11% came in matching expectations. Expects a slowdown in selling expenses in 3Q and 4Q to be a trigger for the share price. Keeps at outperform with a price target of SEK330. Shares trade +0.7% at SEK276.50. In August '05, sales grew 17%. H&M will report August sales growth on September 27, in its report on 3Q results. (MAK)
