Amy Grant released her debut album in 1977 (36 years ago). She crossed over from Christian music to pop in 1991 with her 9th studio album Heart in Motion. Her 17th studio album--called How Mercy Looks from Here--was released in May of this year.

Dolly Parton & Loretta Lynn have been performing/recording/marketing since they were teenagers. And don't forget Loretta was also a teen mom when her career started taking off.

Here's my list of many singers who make music longer than moldonna. And talking about 20+ years, Kylie Minogue debuted 25 years ago.

I don''t know wheter it's a good topic, but I couldn't find more suitable for this.
When asked why Copionna is called the queen of pop some her cranky fans reply that it's only because she is making music for 30 years. This argument is a total fail because there are many original aritists who make music longer than she. Some examples:
Janet Jackson since 1982==30 years
Pet Shop Boys since 1981==31 years
Afrika Bambaataa since 1980==32 years
Dale Bozzio since 1979==33 years
Kate Bush since 1978==34 years
Prince since 1978==34 years
Cyndi Lauper since 1977==35 years
Annie Lennox since 1976==36 years
Deborah Harry & Blondie since 1976==36 years
Sezen Aksu since 1975==37 years
Grace Jones since 1975==37 years
Amanda Lear since 1975==37 years
Pat Benatar since 1974==38 years
Nina Hagen since 1974==38 years
Tina Turner since 1974==38 years
Michael Jackson 1971-2009(=38 years)
Kraftwerk since 1970==42 years
Jane Birkin since 1969==43 years
Donna Summer 1968-2012(=44 years)
Olivia Newton-John since 1966==46 years. Like Kylie Minogue she had a breast cancer operation and she's still great. ^_^
Cher since 1965==47 years
Giorgio Moroder since 1965==47 years
Sheila since 1962==50 years
Raffaella Carra since 1961==51 years
and the winner is... :band:
Fairuz since 1952==60 years!!! :party:
Unlike Madonna some of them are also great actors and fashion designers.
P.S. The funniest thing is that all of them were ripped of by Madonna and from almost ALL OF THEM she stole music for her "re-inventions" :laugh: :bad:

Shame on you for mentioning any male performers, Tiger! They'll call you a sexist misogynist pig! :laugh:

Ohh ... what about Marianne Faithfull (since 1965)? Linda Ronstadt (from 1960's - 2009)? Or the Wilson sisters from Heart (for 40+ years)?

I meant to write "and".
I've figured out that you weren't serious but don't know what you refer to.
P.S. We can add to this list Kim Wilde who debuted year before Queen of Poop. Kim was probably also copied by her.

Weird, beautiful, spellbinding... 35 years on, there's still nothing like Kate Bush: JAN MOIR on a magical night

  • By JAN MOIR FOR THE DAILY MAIL

    PUBLISHED: 17:00 EST, 26 August 2014 | UPDATED: 02:14 EST, 27 August 2014

    Kate Bush made her long-awaited return to the stage last night in her first concert for 35 years. The 56-year-old’s comeback at a celebrity-packed Hammersmith Apollo – the venue of her last gig in 1979 – was first of a 22-date tour.

    Tickets sold out in less than 15 minutes when the tour was announced in March. Last night, they were changing hands for up to £1,000, almost ten times face value

    After a very, very long absence, suddenly there she was. At her first concert for 35 years, Kate Bush appeared under a starburst of jewel-coloured lights, her unmistakeable, ethereal voice resonating around the Hammersmith Apollo in West London.

    She was barefoot, dressed in black, with a tumble of sooty hair that was both piled high on top of her head and also reached down almost to her waist

    Age has not withered our Kate, but the dancing acrobatics and histrionics of an earlier age were gone.

    Instead, the 56-year-old singer first briskly whipped through a clutch of songs without introduction or fanfare, including Hounds Of Love, Running Up That Hill and King Of The Mountain.

    She spoke very little and paused briefly early on in the set only to thank her 16-year-old son, Bertie – who walks onstage with her, is one of her five backing singers and performs assorted little acting routines during the show.

I'm not sure if this is the best thread for this topic, but you know how on some thread (or was it this one? I am too lazy to scroll up and see), Madonna seemed to "win" the 1980s kind of by default.

Today, you can find Madonna fans bragging how Madonna led the way for other female performers in the 1980s and beyond.

One thing I've tried to explain before (and usually to younger people who were not even alive in the 80s) is that the media fixated on Madonna to the detriment of other equally good and viable female singers of the 1980s

You had Jody Watley, Janet Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, Kylie Minogue, Debbie Harry, Sade, Melissa Manchester, Tiffany, Irene Cara, Whitney Houston, Pat Benatar, or female led bands such as Berlin, Bananarama, the Go Gos, The Bangles, and on and on, making great pop, dance, or rock music in the 1980s, but the media was obsessed with Madonna.

The media did not cover the other ladies near as much as they covered Madonna.

I speculate that is so because sex sells (or it did back then), and Madonna was a hyper sexualized act. Madonna was talking vulgar in interviews, grabbing her crotch in tours and videos, etc, and the other women weren't doing that.

This article below seems to confirm aspects of all this.

This article includes most all singers back then, but while their music might be called samey samey here, the media drooled over Madonna in the 80s. Lauper and Janet Jackson didn't get near as much media as Madonna did.

Thanks, Madonna! Science proves that 1980s produced most homogenous pop music in history

    The computer program that analyzed rock 'n' roll just keeps on spitting out insights. First we learned that the Beatles apparently did not spark the 1960s music revolution.

    (The sound of the British invasion was already pulsing through the U.S. before the Fab Four landed here in 1964.) Now we've learned something perhaps not quite as surprising:
    The music of the 1980s was dull and uninspired.

    The music study that has put forth these verdicts -- the paper was published this week in the academic journal Royal Society Open Science -- used a unique computer algorithm to analyze the nearly 17,000 tracks on Billboard's Hot-100 list since 1960, breaking the tracks down by harmony and timbre. And it has concluded that Madonna and Phil Collins have a lot to answer for.

    A "landmark" movement in pop music arrived in 1983 "with the adoption of aggressive, synthesized percussion -- think Phil Collins and his pulsating drum machine -- and loud, guitar-heavy Arena rock with lots of chord changes, such as with Mötley Crüe, Van Halen, REO Speedwagon, Queen, Kiss and Alice Cooper.

    These rock bands were joined by new wave acts -- like the Police and Cyndi Lauper -- plus a surge of metronomic dance-pop heroes like Madonna and the Pet Shop Boys. (Michael Jackson's Thriller dropped in late-1982.) ...

    "[T]hese sounds and styles of the Reagan era flooded the music scene, pushing out genres like country and folk to the point that the mid-to-late 1980s became the most homogenous period in music over the last 50 years, based on the team's computer analysis.

    "This theme doesn't mean music from this era was bad, but rather it suggests 'a small number of styles were very catchy and therefore dominated,' (evolutionary biologist) Mark Pagel said. This catchiness may linger to this day and explain why themes from the 1980s have bounced back over the last decade.

    "Ironically, rap and its abolishment of chords kicked off the most recent surge in musical diversity in 1991."

    So there you have it. The 1980s' popular music was so catchy that musicians inclined toward originality were beaten -- again, think Phil Collins and his pulsating drum machine -- into submission. ...

Topless Grace Jones, Age 67, hits the stage in just body paint
  • August 2015

    Grace Jones is known for putting on a show-stopping appearances.
    But the 67-year-old delivered a performance to remember on Friday night when she hit the stage in just bodypaint and a basque with knickers.
    The musician was headlining Brooklyn's Afropunk festival when she decided to show off her tribal stripes in an extremely bold fashion.

George Michael & M: I can't do that, but I'd like to know why GM faith released in 1987 made such a mess: it's been a success but at the same time criticised - almost boycotted - about sex allegations in i want your sex lyrics, compared that song to hiv issues in the 80s. why albums like M 1984 like a virgin or true blue were untouched instead, knowing that M albums talk 98,9% about sex everytime, and M career's based on sex+religion too (?!). GM had some issues with sony in the 90s and in 2000.

by the way M have had worse moments in her career too: she's well-known as a bad actress and she sucks in almost* in every role she played, (*of course except Evita - but I have doubt even she won a globe for it), poor sales of her latest album (American Life, MDNA, Rebel Heart) since Erotica, her Maverick Records failure, she's been sued for uncredited songs as justify my love and sky fits heaven; she's stolen others material, as sky fits heaven lyrics that were from a commercial, Hollywood and Ray Of Light video clips; she has a bad reputation, also as a music artist, in music industry since the beginning, and in the industry everyone knows that.

so she's overrated and fake.

I think we have a better thread for this, but I can't think of what I called it.

‘Rock and Roll Refugee’: The life of Holocaust survivor and trailblazing rock artist Genya Ravan, the ‘original Madonna,’ is reborn onstage

  • BY SCOTT CHIUSANO NEW YORK DAILY NEWS Monday, February 1, 2016, 2:48 PM A A A

    railblazing rock artist and Holocaust survivor Genya Ravan can remember her first kiss very clearly, more than half a century later.

    The pool at Pitt Park on the Lower East Side was drained in the winter, a high-walled concrete basin perfect to hide away from the often dangerous happenings in the neighborhood, which at the time was a conglomerate of recently transplanted immigrants.

    It was there that a Puerto Rican boy named Coldorado broke away from his gang to "stick his tongue in my mouth," Ravan remembers.

    "I thought, 'what the hell,'" she says now, laughing. "But I went back to the park every day looking for that kiss again."

    A 75-year-old Ravan has no shortage of raucous stories to share once she begins reminiscing, some more harrowing than others. But all of them play a part in shaping the life of this strong, feisty, hilariously candid woman who founded Goldie and the Gingerbreads in 1962 — the first successful all-female rock band that is featured in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — and is only now experiencing a rebirth of her extensive body of work.

    Her story of resilience and reconciliation, from Holocaust survivor to a singer touring with the Rolling Stones and Yardbirds, is being brought to life onstage in "Rock and Roll Refugee," a Royal Family production that premieres on February 2nd.

    “I’m not a superstar," Ravan makes sure to clarify. "But everybody knows who I am."

    Director Christine Henry chose to focus on Ravan's adolescence in the staging, from her arrival on the Lower East Side through Ellis Island to the moment her singing career begins in a smoky nightclub, the result of an impulsive dare from her older sister.

    What happens in between those bookends of her life is at times difficult to fathom.

    Rivington Street and the surrounding Lower East side neighborhood was a haven for refugees in the 1950s, and Ravan's family landed there after fleeing concentration camps.

    Much was lost on the journey. Two brothers dead and rarely mentioned by her mother and father. At Ellis Island, the Zelkovicz family name was stripped from them like tattered clothes. Genyusha (Ravan's original first name) became Goldie and a new identity was born on the brink of a fresh start.

    But nothing came easy. The beautiful parts of a diverse neighborhood — the delicious smells, the wide array of ethnicities — were often overshadowed by the extreme poverty in which the family lived. Ravan recalls nights sitting on the fire escape to avoid the heat of a cramped apartment, doing nude "cheesecake" modeling to support herself and her parents, the inability to make a $35 a month rent.

    "I have to get really mad when people say, 'I had a f---ed up childhood and that's why I turned out to be a robber,'" Ravan says. "I found another way to make a living."

    Music was her lone escape from the many abuses she endured — the slaps from her hard-nosed, religious father, the verbal abuse from a mother who had lost so much in Poland, the sexual abuse from an upstairs neighbor who made her swear to secrecy.

    Sitting with her ear pressed against the side of a radio for hours at a time, those sounds fast became a language to Ravan, of lyrics and hushed swear words that her mother never understood.

    "My parents never spoke English, so f--- was a really good word to use in the house, because they didn't know what it meant," she says, the thick New York accent aged with wisdom dripping from her voice.

    A resentment towards her parents grew inside Ravan until ultimately her father's drinking habits and mother's incessant cleaning were too much to bear.

    After marrying the family's preferred "nice, Jewish boy" at 16 years old, Ravan returned the ring and ran off to California with a Harley Davidson driver named Ralph.

    "I met a guy whose name was Ralph, jumped on his bike and started my life," Ravan says, reciting the first line of one of her songs.

    It was a decidedly rock and roll lifestyle — in such stark contrast to the life she built at 202 Rivington Street — quite literally fraught with sex, drugs and rock and roll. As she made a name for herself with the Gingerbreads and then later with "Ten Wheel Drive," she also battled alcohol addiction and spent time in AA. But her music was always startlingly realistic, a poignant tribute to her real life experiences.

    "She took all this s--- and turned it into art," Henry says. "She was the original Madonna. She paved the way for Lady Gaga. She was both. She was a performer and a musician. There was so much depth to everything she did."

    Genya Ravan paved the path for strong female musicians to come like Madonna and Lady Gaga.

    Ravan still sings at various nightclubs in the city, but her rock and roll career is largely behind her.

    As for 202 Rivington Street, Ravan has been back to see what's become of it. She says it's like a movie set — her block is the only remaining relic of the past. Everything that surrounds it is gentrified, brand new.

    It's much like Ravan herself, a living reminder of the 1960s and 70s era of rock and roll, with a story that is soulful and heartbreaking all at once. And now there's a chance to revisit her body of work, to relive the career of an original sex symbol, a role model for female musicians to come."

    "My life has always been an open book, baby," Ravan said. "I tell it the way it is."

Genya is/was no Madonna - at best, she paved the way for Joan Jett & Debbie Harry. How sad idiot writers need that cliché to make anyone care about the rough life of a seminal woman rocker. Especially when she had to live on welfare after failed tries to become a star power in rock.

Madonna was a pampered suburban princess compared to the years Genya had to grow up within her own pain filled dysfunctional immigrant family who escaped Hitler's regime.
