Love Her Or Hate Her... (cliche)

Am I the only Madonna hater here who is totally annoyed by Manny admirers (I have mostly professional writers in mind here) who start out sentences with the phrase,
  • "Love her or hate her..."
Which is then followed with some puke-i-riffic accolade or another, such as (and, btw, I'm making these examples up, but they're similar to real ones I've seen, some going back to the 1980s):
  • [Love her or hate her...]

... you have to admire that she's a successful business woman, with 20 years of staying power in an otherwise very fickle industry.

... you must admit she's highly entertaining! Nobody puts on a show quite like Madonna. Britney Spears can only dream of commanding a stage the way Madonna does.
Oh, even more annoying (to me) is when the writer inserts an obviously and very false complimentary remark, such as -
  • [Love her or hate her...]

... nobody can overlook that she has done more for the advancement of feminism and the welfare of all women than any other individual.

... there are no other entertainers more original or more cutting-edge than Madonna.
I think that the "love her or hate her" opening is the lazy man's way of deflecting criticism by haters.

Instead of actually addressing our problems with Man-donna, they jump right in with a circular reasoning mindset by saying,
  • "We know you hate her, but you MUST ADMIT, she's great at "X." You can't possibly deny she's swell at "X."
We don't have to admit to something that you, the Manny fan, have not proven or explained satisfactorily to begin with - and which is the very point of contention.

One of the reasons I do not like Manny is that from what I've seen, she is not any good at "X," (whether it's singing, song writing, dancing, what have you) yet journalists keep declaring she is.

I hate the underlying arrogance behind the assumption that I'm supposed to automatically accept that "even though I don't like her," I'm supposed to be in awe of her "talent," "business savvy," and other traits, which I don't even believe exist to start with.

Everyday, average Joe fans are guilty of this tactic as well, and yeah, I find it annoying when they use it too, i.e., "Love her or hate her, you must admit Madonna is the bestest singer ever because she sold out several venues on her tour this year..."

(I'm not perfect. I may have used a similar line of argument in the reverse concerning Man-donna; I honestly don't know or remember. Anyway, it's more irritating to me when I see professional writers doing this in newspapers and online magazines. I expect more from them.)

yeah, well, if they came up with the right lines, such as:

"You have to admit she's had an assload of plastic surgery."

"You've got to be impressed by the fact that they have actually lost count of the times she's made a fool of herself in public."

"You've got to acknowledge that she's got the scariest-looking hands in show business".

"You've got to give her credit for the fact that she can get away with any kind of religious sacriledge simply because the men in power in the media have all whacked off to her videos."

....it's just so....difficult..... for them.... to actually get to the facts.

I find the 'love her or hate her' thing highly irritating. I also hate the 'like it or not' phrase the hag is fond of using. No, hag I don't like it and I hate you because you are an untalented thief of ideas.

Madonna and her fans need to go move to another galaxy or something.

The reason I hate her today is because when she insunates herself into my space, be it tv or radio, I know she's paying to deliberately be there...back in her heyday it was a phenom that was pretty much beyond her control...just the mention of her name created a freaking frenzy but these days, HA it's intentional and it burns me that the very medium she denies her spawns is the same one she's flooding because she can afford to after making a fortune off it...Go away skank PLEASE Go put your kids in school so they're not even further alienated for something beyond their control...like showing up a couple of months into the school term

Another example.

From the page: Madonna - Pop Artist, Icon, Woman of Change

In a light grey box on the upper left of the page is the following:
  • Fan Or Detractor you can't deny her staying power
I can doubt it in the USA. Her career is pretty dead over here.

pretty trite press release- looks like something her staff penned and bulk- mailed.

I found another example in the media of the "Love her or hate her" phenomenon.

EDIT:
Have you noticed that when a paragraph by a journalist starts out with the phrase "Love her or hate her," it always ends with a "love her" view point?

It will start out with "Love her or hate her" but then tack on a positive, such as "you must admit she's done a great thing by doing X."

I mean, you never see one that reads like "Love her or hate her, you must admit that" - and ends with something such as, "she's a tramp for doing such- and- such..."

If I knew java script well enough, as a joke, I think I'd make a "Madonna Cliche' Generator."

Maybe I can do the 'poor man's version' of it and just have two or three columns of cliche's on a web page and tell journalists to play "mix and match," that is, take one word from one column, one from another, etc.

Look what I spotted (ANOTHER EXAMPLE):
  • Love her or loathe her, Madonna's foray has stimulated a lively international debate about how best to deal with the continent's vulnerable children, more than 48 million, according to UN estimates.

Love her or hate her you have to admit when she had the horse accident, the first thought that came to everybody's mind is, what was she doing to the horse?

"Whatever you think of her..."

Yeah, whatever you think of her-
"She's a baby killer, puppy kicker, snatcher of lollipops from infants - whatever you think of her, she puts on a great show so you gotta give her props for that and buy one of her DVD copies!" :rolleyes2: :bad:

Album Review: Madonna, Confessions Tour
  • Whatever you think of her, Madonna’s show is a real stunner.

Of course! Don't you know that it's fine to overlook animal killing for profit, sleaze, Nazi photo worshipping, adultery, and using people as long as the jerk in question has plenty of lights and costumes in their show?
Hitler may have killed at least 6 million people by gassing them in fake showers, and he invaded most of Europe, shot anyone he suspected of being disloyal, and tried to exterminate an entire religion, but it's cool, he put on a hell of a show with his SS troops goosestepping in neato black uniforms, and those wild rallies!
That is Madonna Fan Logic.

Tell-it-like-it-is account of Madonna, modern-day icon
  • Madonna- Like An Icon - Lucy O' Brien

Love her or loathe her - and there can be no middle ground - Madonna is a phenomenon that is impossible to ignore.
These days, I think it's quite possible to ignore her, since we hardly hear or see anything about her in the United States. (Especially for the past month or two, there's really not been any news items about her.)

Do this tonight: Dial 'M' for Madonna - Los Angeles Times

    Good afternoon, readers.

Madonna. Love her, hate her -- it's all moot. She's been a pop cultural inspiration since the 1980s and doesn't appear to be going anywhere outside of public consciousness anytime soon. ...

I've got one of my own - love her or hate her, Madonna has no musical skills or talent, therefore making her entire career a charade.

How about this:

Love her or hate her, you can't deny that her vagina is as wide as the panama canal, due to all the people she's slept with.

Love her or hate her, you can't deny she got where she is by using sex in a time where she didn't have to.

Love her or hate her, you can't deny that she makes homosexuals seem disgusting and perverted when she pretends to care about them

Love her or hate her, you can't deny that she has no fans in America[/B]

Why do journalists keep opening every other article and review with the phrase "Love her or hate her," or some variation of it?

Yes but it has never stopped us criticizing her anyway !

They can write what they want after their "Love her or hate her" formula (they tend to write positive thing), it won't make me change my mind about ManDonna. :bio:

Except if what comes after the rhetorical crap is "She has always been one of the nastiest individual of this planet" or "It will be hard to find an ounce of talent in her". :good:
