Get ready for Madonna's "Sticky and Sweet Tour'' with our pop quiz
  • Scarlet Scuttlebutt, NJ - 4 hours ago
By CHRIS JORDAN • Staff Writer • October 2, 2008

Love her or hate her, you can't ignore Madonna.
Wwwwweeeeell, technically, in this day and age, I can pretty much ignore her.

Anytime I get on the web, as long as I don't check Google News for her name or visit the fan sites, I don't hear anything about her.

A few months ago, I saw a small blurb about her in the Houston Chronicle, about her tour or something, but that's been about it.

Anyhoo, I'm so sick of the
"Love Madona or hate her, you gotta admit blah blah blah blah..." opener.

Buried deep down in this fairly barfy tour review is the cliche':

Concert review: Madonna
  • by Parul Pandya / Toronto / Wednesday, October 29, 2008

....After 25 years performing she continues to give it to us with everlasting vigour and dedication. Love or hate her, you will pay attention.

I know you look at this headline and think, "Shouldn't this be in the exercise thread?" but keep reading (and yeah, it might be cross posted to the exercise thread)...

I did Madonna's workout... and it nearly killed me
  • By Ashley Pearson
    05th February 2009

Leg exercises that leave you too weak to walk. A gym machine like a medieval rack. And death-defying dancing on a treadmill. Still think you want to look like Madge?

Love her or loathe her, you have to admit that, at 50, Madonna looks pretty good for her age. Her toned thighs and 'bingo wings of steel' are envied by women half her age. Similarly, Gwyneth Paltrow - despite a successful film career - is more celebrated for her long and lean legs than any of her recent performances.

Here's a variation on the ol' "Love her or hate her" cliche', from the article Madonna tops 2008 moneymaker list with successful concert tour
  • February 14, 2009, by DrewHasselback

You may like Madonna's music, or you may not. Whatever you're opinion, you can't deny that she's one heck of a business woman.
First of all, that should be 'your opinion' not 'you're opinion.'

Secondly, it's not really Madonna's music* that's the problem: it's her personality, her lack of decent ethics, and her image that most people find objectionable.

But yes, I can deny that she's allegedly "one heck of a business woman," and I have an entire thread (click here) that demonstrates why Madonna is not "one heck of a business woman."

Briefly: earning a lot of money does not necessarily make one a 'savvy business woman.'

Britney Spears, the fluffy, pop singing, bimbo air head (I say that without malice, as I do not hate Spears) also has earned million of dollars, but would this Drew Hasselback refer to Spears as a "savvy business woman?" No, probably not.

Any uneducated person who doesn't have a lick of business knowledge can earn millions of dollars as a pop star.
(*Should we even call it "Madonna's" music, since much of it is written for her by other people?)

This contains a variation of the "love her or hate her, you have to admit that..." cliche one often finds in articles about Madonna:

Is Madonna the world's most boring date? Star takes toyboy Jesus Luz to Kabbalah... again
  • Whether you envy or deride Madonna for bagging herself a 22-year-old lover, it cannot be denied she has performed a remarkable feat.

However, as the 50-year-old star and her toyboy Jesus Luz stepped out on a date today - yet again heading to the New York Kabbalah Centre - it seems she is perhaps in running for the unofficial title of 'World's Most Boring Date'.

The two, who are reportedly in the first flush of love, spend each Saturday attending sessions at the centre.

Madonna's 'Celebration' ends 25 years at WB; Oakenfold mix debuted in Ibiza club-hear it here

This is the very first line of the page above:
  • Love her or hate her, there is no denying Madonna has made a huge impact on music and music culture for nearly 30 years now.
It's bad to use the "love her or hate her" spiel in regards to Madonna (since it's rather over-used), but to place it as very first thing in your opening (first line of very first paragraph) is really bad.

At least now that Madonna has been a has-been for the past several years in particular, I've not been seeing the old "Love her or hate her" cliche' as much as I did back when she was at the height of her manufactured controversy stage (the early 1990s).

Madonna Compares Bullying to Hitler Exterminating the Jews

Excerpt:
  • Whether you like her or not, at the very least, you have to give Madonna a little respect. After all, is there really anyone else like her?
Re:
  • After all, is there really anyone else like her?
It depends.

If you mean being trashy and giving sexual favors to get media attention, record deals, magazine covers and movie roles, then yes, kind of - she wasn't the first to do that.

But if you mean her hairstyles, clothing choices, and such, yes. She stole most of her ideas (fashion, music videos, etc) from other celebrities. So yes, there "have been others like her."

Here's a variation of the "love her or hate her" cliche' so often used (at least it was used all the time in the past when discussing Madonna):
  • Style Icon Spotlight

Fan or not, I defy anyone to not fall in love with Madonna's mish-mash, over-the-top style....
Let me complete the sentence my way:

"Fan or not, I defy anyone to not fall in love with Madonna's mish-mash, over-the-top style... that was created in part by her stylist friend Maripol, and the rest was ripped off Debbie Harry, other models of the 1980s, with a bit of Cyndi Lauper and Billy Idol tossed in."

Why should I "admire her guts or staying power"?

Playing the victim just won't wash, Madonna
  • By Amanda Platell

But of all people Madonna has no reason for self-doubt. Even her detractors cannot help but admire her guts and her staying power. If her movie W.E. is a flop, at least she had the courage to make it. Surely now is the time for her to relish her achievements, enjoy her family and her man less than half her age — and flourish.

It’s not the moment for her to ‘identify’ with a brutally selfish, sexually ambiguous and malign old boot such as Wallis Simpson.

Madonna's Super Bowl halftime show was (fill in the blank)
  • By Conor Berry, The Republican

Love her or hate her, Madonna, 53, is no spring chicken. Rather, she's a middle-aged mother of three, so maybe pushing envelopes has taken a backseat to pushing her kids to become CPAs or podiatrists or X-ray technicians.

I am officially sick of the "love her or hate her" and "love ____ or hate _____" phrases.

Yeah, the Vadge has been around for a gazillion years. So what? She still can't sing and couldn't come up with an original concept if her life depended on it.

Several of these recent editorials defending Madonna contain the moldy oldy "love her or hate her" line (I responded to some of these in the Ageism thread, page 3, at the bottom) :

Madonna Targeted for Being Older and Female by Ellen Karis
  • by Ellen Karis

Madonna – love her or hate her. Some think she has no talent, while others have named their daughters after her.
Here's another:
Was Madonna Too Old for the Halftime Show? Or Is This Just a Double Standard?

Quote:
  • Love her or hate her stagecraft or music, everyone is entitled to their opinion. But calling Madonna "too old"...

Here's a variation of the "Love her or hate" her spiel:

Trending: Madonna proves that shocking is in her DNA
  • But her accompanying tour, which kicked off last week, will no doubt silence her detractors as her stage presence remains and vivacious – and volatile – as ever.
Her tour hasn't silenced this detractor. I don't view her desperate stunts (showing swastika type symbols on tour, flashing nude boob) to be "volatile."

Leave Madonna's 53-Year-Old Breast Alone‎
  • by Amy Odell BuzzFeed Staff

(Sorry, but this is Madonna we're talking about. Love her or hate her, she's a whole lot more special than many of us.)
No, she's not "a whole lot more special than many of us." What possessed you to write that? She used to steal BFs and husbands away from their GFs / Wives. I doubt they'd agree that she's more special than the rest of us. If we could conduct a seance with the 1 billion babies she aborted in her life, I doubt they'd think she's more special than the rest of us... All the people she has shoved, pushed, taken advantage of, ditto.

Business Thumbs: Malady losing a golden opportunity on Madonna
  • The Times Group (blog) - ‎19 hours ago‎

Like or loath her, Madonna is a world icon and one of the biggest celebrities that attracts attention from millions of admirers the world over, especially in Europe and America. This is why troops of media crews follow her where ever she goes. That Madonna ...
About 27 years ago Madonna was a "world icon."

She's since been replaced by Britney Spears then a series of other females including Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Adele, etc.

Is Madonna out of the groove? Not quite yet...
  • Love or loathe the American singer there’s no denying that she has the ability to spot and exploit a trend. It’s helped her rack up global record sales of 300million and earn the title Queen of Pop.
