Madonna claimed during the 1980s that she never did drugs, and many of her fans in the world of journalism brag about her non-drug use.
Even if she was just joking about using marijuana, I don't think it's appropriate for a celebrity to joke about drug use. (But then, most teens don't know who she is, so she's not much of a role model who has any influence anymore.)
Watch Madonna Cop To Smoking A Joint Before Dropping F-Bomb On Letterman...
Madonna Talks Marijuana, Marriage and Makes Us Laugh- When Dave started to gush about how excited he gets whenever Madonna stops by (this is her eighth appearance), Madonna admitted that she had made a fool of herself on his show in the past...but not because she was excited about him. "I think it may have had something to do with the joint I smoked before I came on." She quickly added, "I didn't inhale... It doesn't count, really."
Madonna: Weed to blame for infamous 1994 Letterman appearance (Video) - In line with what we've come to expect, Madonna talked without inhibition when she visited David Letterman last night. Along with claiming that she'd "rather get run over by a train" than be married again, she also shared just what it was that instigated her infamous March 1994 Letterman appearance, when she dropped the F-bomb 13 times: the joint she smoked beforehand. Kind of explains the goofy smile and uncontrollable laughter, too. [The Daily Swarm]

She used to take a vague anti-drug position in the 80s and 90s. She would periodically remind interviewers that she did not abuse drugs (and sometimes they asked her) - and she seemed kind of proud of the fact that she does not take or abuse drugs.
So what gives with her making all the drug references now, while promoting the MDNA album? Does she think talking about drugs now will make her sound hip and edgy?
Edit new link Deadmau5 Slams Madonna Over 'Molly,' Ecstasy Reference At Ultra Music Festival - Deadmau5, one of the leading producers of progressive house music, took to Twitter and Facebook to rail against the pop star for what he called grossly irresponsible behavior.
"Very classy there madonna. "HUR DUR HAS ANYONE SEEN MOLLY???" such a great message for the young music lovers at ultra," he posted on Facebook early Monday morning. "quite the f'n philanthropist. but hey, at least yer HIP AND TRENDY! f***ing cant smack my head hard enough right now."
Madonna, who's album MDNA was released today, has yet to respond to the Canadian producer.
To Deadmau5 (who's real name is Joel Zimmerman), Madonna was trading on a negative association to appear relevant. By casually referencing MDMA usage at an event attended by 150,000 concertgoers and streamed online to tens of thousands more, the pop star helped cement an association that Zimmerman and other performers have fought to disprove. Cheeky Madonna hits bum note on stage with backside sticking out of hotpants - When Madonna said she wanted to hang out in Miami, she was as good as her word.
The 53-year-old went on stage at a music festival with her backside protruding from a pair of black hotpants.
She then really bottomed out with a reference to the drug Ecstasy – which is known as “Molly” among US clubbers.
Introducing Swedish DJ Avicii at the event, she grinned: “How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?
“Are you ready to dance? Are you ready to sweat? Are you ready to make some noise, mother******s?"

The hag has responded to Deadmau5's criticism:
Madonna hits back at dance DJ Deadmau5 for accusing her of 'promoting ecstasy' at Miami gig
- Quote:
-
She took to Twitter, posting a Photoshopped picture of herself wearing Minnie Mouse ears, writing: 'From one mouse to another I dont support drug use and i never have.
'I was referring to the song called Have You Seen Molly written by my friend Cedric Gervais who I almost worked with on my album.'
He then gave some sort of apology, but reiterated his original point:
- Quote:
-
Deadmau5 - real name Joel Thomas Zimmerman - then responded to the tweet, conceding: 'Fair enough, I was just voicing my concerns as I usually do. +1 respect for clearing it up personally... regardless, just be a little more aware of what you should represent at EDM events, and I'll watch my mouth.'
Of course, the hag "got the final word" and basically said that he should have called her first, so they could discuss this in private. Arrogant.
By the way, how does she explain the title of her album - MDNA - being so close to MDMA, a compound found in the drug ecstasy?
This article also had some funny observations:
- Quote:
-
And while many were slating the musician for speaking out against Madonna's antics, some saw his point of view.
One called Tami Donaldson Luzzi said: 'This really isn't about house music or Madonna being a great performer.
'It's about someone in the public eye that many teenagers and kids look up to, going on stage using drug lingo, TRYING to sound COOL as a ploy to win over the electro house heads.
She's just trying to tap into a world where she could make a few trillion bucks.
Get a life Madge! Go write a childrens book now. Ha, what a joke.

Yeah, I mentioned that the other day here. I am still wondering if her fight with that guy was staged. The timing of his Twitter outburst coincided too neatly with her first official visit to Twitter.

I wouldn't put it past her to do something like that, and I am sure plenty of lesser-known artists would be willing to go along with it for the extra publicity.

Paul van Dyk Calls Madonna Comment 'So Stupid'- Madonna made "the biggest mistake of her career" at Ultra Music Festival, says electronic music veteran Paul van Dyk.
"I don't think she was thinking much," the DJ/producer told Billboard. "The only thing she was probably thinking was, 'I need to connect with a young crowd,' and she made the biggest mistake of her career."
Van Dyk joins Deadmau5 -- who had a much-publicized Twitter spat with the singer -- in condemning comments she made while introducing Ultra headliner AVICII on Saturday (March 24) to an all-ages crowd of over 50,000. The pop diva praised EDM culture, saying "Electronic music has been a part of my life since the beginning of my career," then posed a question heard 'round the world: "How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?"
Molly is a street name for ecstasy and its derivatives.
"Madonna was so stupid to actually call out drug abuse in front of a crowd of 18-year-olds," said van Dyk. "This is not what our music is about. It's really counterproductive."
Following the comment -- and a Deadmau5-led backlash -- Madonna posted an explanation on Twitter. "I don't support drug use and I never have," she said. "I was referring to the song called 'Have You Seen Molly' written by my friend Cedric Gervais who I almost worked with on my last album."

Electronic dance music star Deadmau5 says he's still mad at Madonna for a comment she made at the Ultra Music Festival in March.
In the new issue of Rolling Stone, Deadmau5, whose real name is Joel Zimmerman, says he's still peeved at the "Vogue" singer for asking the crowd if they've seen "Molly" - slang for Ecstasy.
"You want to be 'hip' and 'cool' and 'funky grandma'? Fine. It's not my place to say you're irrelevant. If you're gonna come into my world, at least do it with a little more dignity," he said. "I understand she has millions more fans, and is way more successful than I'll ever be. But it's like talking about slavery at a f---ing blues concert. It's inappropriate."
This isn't the first time Zimmerman has addressed Madonna's "Molly" comment. In March, he tweeted, "You're a role model to 100's of millions. [Electronic dance music] could use your positive influence, not 'molly' talk." Madonna then clarified that she wasn't referring to the drug, but the song "Have you Seen Molly" by Cedric Gervais. "I don't support drug use and I never have," she added.

Something about her and the author' disappointment with her mentioning drug. It gets positive and gross near the end but some good points are still raised.
(Also, I don't know if this article is meant to be serious/sarcastic or not... I did not understand the tone the author was going for...)
MADONNA RELEASES ‘MDNA’ LIVE ALBUM. ROLE MODEL OF THE YEAR? DERP.
- American singer-songwriter, actress, author, director, entrepreneur, philanthropist and 55 year-old elderly wonder-woman Madonna has just released her fourth live album titled ‘MDNA World Tour’ via Live Nation Entertainment and Interscope.
It was released a few days ago on September 6 and documents the performances at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida during the North American leg of ‘The MDNA Tour’ in 2012, and also the footage from other shows. But although she’s released 12 albums since 1983 and hosted nine tours since 1985, as well being dubbed “the most important woman in the history of popular music”, we’re still not too sure about the antics revolving around her priceless promotion of drug use in the music community.
Coming just days after we found out ketamine users have a higher chance of getting cancer, as well as the tragic Electric Zoo deaths where Tommie Sunshine called for calm with the ever-increasing ecstasy culture, is a prominent has-been (woops) figurehead like Madonna really paying her dues by calling her album ‘MDNA’?
Sure, everybody knows the wonders of MDMA, and we all know it’s nothing close to a new phenomenon in the music community. But for the new kids growing up who are starting to find something to grasp onto in the way of dance music and ultimately searching for role models, should somebody who has been so influential for so (s0) many years for so many people be discretely advocating the drug?
We know it’s nothing new for her, though. Remember when she opened up for Avicii‘s show at Ultra last year and asked the already-MDMA-fuelled crowd “has anyone seen Molly?!”. This sparked a hilarious typical rant from Deadmau5 who told the weathered musician to show some responsibility for her actions, and despite her defence being in the way of promotion for a Cedric Gervais track, we all know she was just trying to bring back her youthful glory days. And now, despite all the hate she got for that, she strikes again.
But with hits on the album like ‘Papa Don’t Preach’ from 1986, ‘Like A Prayer’ and ‘Express Yourself’ from 1989, the deep house-influenced ‘Vogue’ from 1990 and ’Hung Up’ from 2005, wouldn’t you think that with 4 kids at home, she should be getting to the stage of her life where drinking peppermint tea in front of UKTV is more desirable than railing molly off a stripper’s chest who wasn’t even alive when she was 30?
In my opinion her newest tunes off ‘MDNA’ are woeful and in no way reflect the true musician she was, or still is. Unlike artists like The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and Jimi Hendrix whose legacy to music will always live on, I think Madonna’s main era in the limelight has unfortunately passed. Maybe worse, too, is that she’s trying – and failing – to bring back those triumphant days by ‘engaging’ with the youth of today through drug references.
Perhaps she’s feeling a sense of insignificance in a world where there are so many more good musicians than there were when she started, and she’s trying to launch herself back into popular demand by acting like a turbo cause that’s what ‘popular’ ‘artists’ like Pitbull and Flo-Rida do. But really, we can all agree that in doing so she’s lost a lot of dignity and merit, cause who likes those two toys anyway? Their music videos advocating ‘fully sick’ parties where they’re ‘poppin’ bottles’ on the ‘sexy bitches’ are an absolute disgrace to music altogether. But that’s a different story.
I feel a bit of sympathy for Madonna in this sense, though, because at the end of the day she’s 55, and it’s hard work for anybody staying on top of popular music these days since the quantity’s so high. Who can blame her for thinking that everybody would respect her more for calling her album ‘MDNA’? After all, she probably doesn’t know how to get on the Internet to find real music, so her only source is MTV where acting like an idiot is the norm.
Don’t get me wrong, she (thankfully) doesn’t have any correlation to the likes of Shitbull, Flo-Rida and the like, but fact that she opened up for Avicii - who thinks there’s actually some sense in mixing poor commercial house with country music – openly clarifies that she has no idea what’s going on post-2005. This abuse of the EDM scene, which has now turned into nothing short of a community of swag-fags, has clearly sucked in the near-retiree as she now moves to low-quality dance music to endorse drug use.
But on the off chance that you’re reading this, Madonna, let me just say there was no disrespect intended with this article. We don’t underestimate your contribution to the music industry in any sense since the 1880s, sorry, 1980s*, but we just think maybe it could be time to join a book club, learn bingo, finish knitting that blanket you started 5 years ago, learn to pay for things without a cheque-book and generally reminisce on your career, rather than encourage young punks to think that drugs are cool, or worse, think that it’s normal for a 55 year-old woman to still use them.

I think it was serious but have some sarcastic accents. Like this:
- Quote:
-

It wasn't a mistake, because author would simply correct it. It was written to emphasize that she not young and not on top.

...If she's so healthy and drug-free, what's she doing with a bong? Oh that's right, she has admitted to smoking pot and not too long ago was trying to be all cool with the kids by referencing 'Molly'...
...what an amazing jerk...those poor children...

Those little medicine bottles are apparently just ironic party favors. Tee hee ...
I read that 1996 Vanity Fair mag article done when she was filming Evita. Among the whining & complaining of hers was the admission she took Xanax. Sucked to be her then, sucks to be her now.

She and her publicists always made a big deal out of the fact that she supposedly never did drugs (back in the 1980s when magazines published stories on her, and they also reported this a bit in the 90s).
So while it's good she's not advising drug usage in this latest interview, I find this a little hypocritical, because she has been admitting off and on the last several years she has dabbled in drugs.
Madonna Poses Topless For Interview, Talks Drug Use
Madonna Poses Topless, Talks Past Drug Use, Mother's Death, Dating Jean-Michel Basquiat: See the Wild Pictures - Celebrity News Dec. 1, 2014 AT 3:45PM By Esther Lee
Life is a mystery no more! Madonna let it all out inside the December 2014/January 2015 issue of Interview magazine, where she posed topless in a racy spread for legendary photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, and discussed her (short!) history with drugs, losing her mother at a young age, as well as her former relationships.
The pop superstar, 56, spoke candidly with magician David Blaine about dabbling in drugs in the past. "It's about how people take drugs to connect to God or to a higher level of consciousness," she mused.
"I keep saying 'Plugging into the matrix.' If you get high, you can do that, which is why a lot of people drop acid or do drugs, because they want to get closer to God. But there’s going to be a short circuit, and that’s the illusion of drugs, because they give you the illusion of getting closer to God, but ultimately they kill you."

I find it ridiculous that she mentions glue sniffing on her album.
The Madonna of 1985 would have laughed at the Madonna of 2014 and her glue sniffing lyrics.
Ha ha haaaa. This is the actual headline on the page: Madonna Sings About Sniffing Glue on Her Great New Album ‘Insurgent Coronary heart’
They actually refer to her Rebel Heart album as " ‘Insurgent Coronary heart’"
I assume English is not their first language, and they ran English articles through Google translate or something?
Anyway.
Madonna’s Leaked Album May Be Her Best: Glue Sniffing Salvation and A Joan of Arc Complex - Of course, Madonna likes to shock. In “Make the Devil Pray,” which musically owes a lot to the Animals’ “House of the Rising Sun,” she sings about redemption after indulgence : “We can do drugs, we can smoke weed, and we can drink whiskey. We can get high, and we could get stoned, we can sniff glue, and we could do E, and we can drop acid.”
This is a positive editorial. Whomever wrote it spends most of the page praising the album. I'm including it only because it mentions the glue sniffing lyrics Madonna Sings About Sniffing Glue on Her Great New Album 'Rebel Heart' --------------- Edit Madonna's 'Rebel Heart' Leak Scandal is a Pop Anomaly - by Jason St. Amand
"Devil Pray," a song Avicii and Blood Diamonds worked on, is unfortunately pretty embarrassing (a lyric about sniffing glue? Really?) and finds Madonna following Avicii's folk-EDM sound, which will be really played out by March 2015. Then there's the meta "Illuminati," where Madonna addresses the conspiracy theory that A-listers like herself are members of the devil-worshiping group. It's wild and dark but still playful and the cut was surprisingly co-produced by Kanye West. After learning that, the song clicks into place.
