IF MADONNA WANTS TO BE IMPORTANT, SHE’LL NEED TO LEARN HOW TO SHOCK US AGAIN
  • Jan 25, 2016
    BY RYAN PFEFFER

...But this process of reinvention that she’s signed up for, it has its downside: We all get to see when she falls flat. Her live show, part of the Rebel Hearts tour she’s currently hauling across the country, is a lot of things. It’s a visual treasure. It’s fun, wonderfully choreographed.

But one thing it is gapingly not is dangerous. No black-Jesus-level shock and awe.

She was competent and most definitely not drunk, a weird rumor that's flashed around the internet over her past few shows.

The concert lived up to expectations, but that’s just it. Madonna became a legend by smashing expectations.

The only surprising thing that happened during the whole show was when she brought out DJ Khaled for no apparent reason, because I think that’s a requirement at this point for any concert above a certain capacity.

(Also, on an unrelated note, we’ve found the one demographic of people who couldn’t give less of a f-ck about DJ Khaled: Madonna fans. They were confused by his presence and would have cheered louder for a cantaloupe.)

The bulk of Madonna’s set were songs from her most recent, 13th studio album, Rebel Heart. She performed some hits: “Like a Virgin,” “Dress You Up,” “Material Girl.”

But she spun her classics into gothic, almost dub step-y remixes. Her version of “Material Girl” sounded like it was produced by the puppet from the Saw movies.

For her encore, she sang a pretty straightforward version of “Holiday." It was the song she sang on d*ck Clark's American Bandstand in 1984, when the world was first meeting the singer. After the performance, Clark pulled her aside for a brief interview.

Asked what she wanted to do next — what her hopes for the future were — an out-of-breath Madonna replied without hesitation: "To rule the world."

And she did. The world, for a while, fit comfortably in her palm. But now she’s faced with an even harder task: taking it back. Can she do it? God knows she’s trying.

Obviously a review by a fan. Wasn't there evidence that she was drunk?

The first half of his review, which was eye rollingly positive and ass-kissey, I left off.

Notice his second half (the part I copied) basically said her show was boring. She has become predictable. I've been saying that for ages.

She is doing the same Catholic / sex controversial stuff since the 1980s. She's been wearing the same mid-length blonde hair style the last ten or more years. She isn't "reinventing" herself or her shows anymore and stopped a long time ago.

Re: drunk on tour. That is a bit more complicated. She swears she was not drunk on one specific tour everyone said she was drunk on (though she was acting weird and making JOKES about being drunk), but during the next show or the one after, a company swears she was drinking on stage (they supplied her with the alcohol she used on tour). See the "Drunk" thread for those links

I think the piece was written more out of disappointment, not buttkissing. And if you ask me, the writer was probably afraid of a slander suit or blacklisting.

If anyone still can't believe Madonna's going through substance abuse, I have a beautiful candy colored unicorn farm to sell them.

I did not copy the guy's entire review to the forum.

I only pasted in the second half, where he criticized her show for being dull.

The top half of it, though, was written in a little bit of a slobbery, devoted fan mode, about how great Madonna is at singing and dancing.

Even in the midst of a few pot shots in the first half (where he mentioned, for example, how stupid American Life's lyrics are), he's basically saying how great, trendsetting, and wonderful she is.

He just wishes she was as (supposedly) ground-breaking and hip now as she was back in the day.

You can read his full review -here (IF MADONNA WANTS TO BE IMPORTANT, SHE’LL NEED TO LEARN HOW TO SHOCK US AGAIN)-
