Dazzled girls want to be WAGs instead of having careers, headmistresses warn

WAGs are a UK thing - it stands for Wives and Girlfriends, and they are usually wives/girlfriends of footballers. They're kind of like D-list celebs. Sadly, a lot of girls in the UK want to be WAGs instead of having proper careers, according to this article.

An excerpt:

Quote:

'I think it is the whole celebrity culture. You see wives and girlfriends who are famous because of their situation, not necessarily their skill and talent.

'If girls think to be rich and famous is to be some sort of goal, parents may consider that that's a less positive outlook than wanting to be successful in a recognised profession and make a career that will have a positive impact on people's lives.'

But she said that aspects of celebrity culture could be positive, suggesting that TV hospital dramas such as ER and Casualty may encourage teenage girls to choose careers in medicine.

Of course. Teen girls tend to be caught up in the "glamourous" life sold by the media. Once most girls reach a certain age, their priorities change after that. In other words, it's probably just a phase for the majority of these girls.

And for those whom it isn't a phase, they're probably not that bright in the first place. And well, not everybody can be a rocket scientist anyway. There's still spots that need to be filled in convenience stores and fast food restaurants.

So, whether they know it or not, they'll all have "careers". Whether or not it's a job they like doing... well, that's another matter.
