![]() ![]() Bruins assistant captain Patrice Bergeron during the Bruins home opener The Bruins have disappointed to start the season, going 2-2 and ranking among the bottom in the league in PP%. The Bruins won both their games against their division rivals Toronto and Ottawa, but lost both out of division games to New Jersey and Dallas. The PP went 0 for 6 in Dallas and 1 for 5 in New Jersey. "This year we're trying out a new system on the power play and the boys are still adjusting to it. We need time to figure it out, but I think once it clicks we'll get rolling." - Bergeron The PK has been a bit of a different story, going 5 for 6 in Dallas, 2 for 2 in New Jersey and 0 for 1 in Toronto. "It's a small sample, we let in a a bad goal in Toronto, but we really can't expect to give up 6 power plays and to not allowed a goal. We need to be smarter than that." - Eriksson The duo of Eriksson and Bergeron have had instant chemistry, both are currently at a point per game, playing on the 1st PP the 1st PK and the 2nd line together. "We're starting to develop some chemistry, when you have the same guy on your wing all game no matter what the role you're in, you start to get use to him, start to know where he is and where he's going to be, and Looch is obviously great for us on the wing, he makes a lot of room for others when he plays" - Bergeron Both have been busy averaging around 20 mins a night. "We like the work load, we're both versatile players and we take pride in being able to play in a lot of different roles together." - Eriksson Hopefully the duo will be able to lead the team to a winning record before they get into too big of a hole. "Pave-"ing the way to a better Power Play ![]() Pavelski will round out the oilers top six, anchoring the 2nd line The Oilers made a splash late Monday, acquiring 29 yr old centre Joe Pavelski from the San Jose sharks in a package deal that included Vlasic also coming to Edmonton and a package of picks and prospects going to San Jose. "I think it shows that our team is done rebuilding, and we want to win now. Obviously some of the guys still in here are still pretty young. Yak and Nuge are both still 20, even Ebs who seems like he's been around for ever is only 25, so bringing in Joe who's 29 and Pickles who's 26 shows that we're trying to build for now and for the future." - Hall "I'm excited to join the Oilers, everyone knows how much fire power they have developing upfront, once Hall, Ebs, Nuge and Yak all hit their stride in this league they're going to be a dangerous combo, I just want to do my part, play a smart two-way game and get the puck to the guys who can burry it." - Pavelski "I'm looking forward to playing with Joe, played against him a lot when I was in St. Louis, he's a good two-way guy, he's smart and he makes the guys around him better, we've been practising so far with him between me and Ebs and it's been feeling like a good fit so far, we'll see what happens when we actually get to playing a game." - Perron The Oilers PP should also receive a large boost from this deal. The Oilers have been terrible in the face-off circle on the PP, something Pavelski should improve. The Oilers play again tonight in Colorado. Edited by RedBull, Oct 1 2013, 03:35 PM.

A Beautiful, no a "Gorges" Penalty Kill ![]() Josh Gorges will begin serving as the Oilers new captain with Smyth being moved The Oilers have revamped their PK, lead by the Oilers new captain Josh Gorges. The Oilers have only allowed 4 goals on their last 26 penalties. Something they want to keep working on. "We're killing them at about 85% right now, but we want to get better. We've played a lot of road games recently so we don't always have the match ups we like on the PK, but over all we know we can get better." - Gorges The Oilers will try and rotate the PK minutes more evenly between their 4 PK defensemen. "I think we're going to move Gorges to the 2nd PK unit, Spurgy or Vlas will be on the 1st PK with Smid, so Gorges can get a bit more ES time." - Oilers Head coach. "It's about balancing minutes and finding right fits. Things are changing a lot right now, but when things settle down we can do some more experimenting and find the fit we like." The power play has also been strong, but at practise today the team has moved Spurgeon and RNH to the 1st PP while moving Pacioretty and Hall to the 2nd PP. "We're trying to roll 2 PP units now, so balancing it out a bit more, trying different strategies. It's just a matter of finding something that clicks." - Pacioretty The Oilers have gone 3/9 in Oct on the PP while going 7/21 in their last 6 games. "We might come back to the PP unit we just had this last week, they did well, can't complain with a 33% PP. But what we have now might work out even better, but if not we'll switch back." - Oilers head coach |

Za-"Jacked" up to get going ![]() In a stunning move the Oilers traded Center Joe Pavelski to the Devils for Travis Zajac The Edmonton Oilers pulled of a shocking move trading Joe Pavelski, one of the league top 30 scorers to the devils for 6'3 C Travis Zajac. Pavelski didn't last long in the Oilers uniform playing for only a month in the copper and gold. "We had no idea lil joe was being shopped. We knew the team was looking to get bigger upfront, to add some size down the middle, but we didn't know who was going to be moved to make that happen. With that said I couldn't be more excited to play with Zajac, he's an incredible talent, he has very soft hands for a big guy like him. He's probably a bit more of a play maker than joe was, so that'll only make life easier for me and Ebs, so we'll see what happens in the end." - Pacioretty "I'm very excited to join the Oilers, they're a young team with a lot of potential. My age fits in well with them, I can be a bit of an older mentor, but I'm still young, only 29. I think playing with Patches on one side and Eberle on the other will be amazing. Eberle is leading the league in scoring right now, so not much I need to say about him and Patches is a big dude, probably as tall and probably even heavier than I am. So put us together and should be able to cycle the puck well and just keep feeding Ebs." - Zajac "Pavelski was a great guy, and helped our team out, but the fit obviously just wasn't working. We needed someone with a bit more size, a bit more of a play maker, and I think we got that with Travie." - Captain Gorges. |

A P"urst" Of Energy ![]() Brandon Prust has made the Oilers a much harder team to play against When the Oilers changed ownership their goals were simple. Get bigger, get tougher and allow less goals. So far Prust has been contributing to all three of those categories. The 6 foot, 200lbs winger definitely plays above his size, throwing large hits, and dropping the mits as needed. Prust has been a regular on the PK [the odd time it's not him in the box] and has stabilized a third line of himself with Gordon and Jacques. "I know I'm not getting paid to score goals or make passes, that's not what I do best. It never will be. But I can hit, I can block shots, I can do those little things you need to win, and thats why I'm here." - Prust "He makes life a bit easier for everyone on our team, and a bit harder for everyone on their team." Captain Gorges The Oilers top six is slowly beginning to mature. The new second line of Pacioretty - Zajac - Eberle has yet to play any minutes together, but both Pacioretty and Eberle are among the league scorers, with Eberle leading the league in goals and points while the first line hasn't been able to keep up. The trio of Hall/RNH/Yakupov have a total of 9 goals between them over their first 15 games, and a combined minus 14, something which is not acceptable for a team fighting for 1st place in the conference. While that trio has struggle Eberle and Pacioretty have 17 goals between just the two of them. "We need to pick it up, we know we've been on the ice for a lot of goals against, and haven't been able to score to often, so we need to fix that department for sure. We're growing though, we're getting better each game. We had 4 goals I think over the last 6-7 games, so it's getting better." Hall |

"Hall"ing Apart ![]() Taylor Hall and the oilers are slowly sliding in the standings The Edmonton Oilers are on a downward slide falling from 2nd in the League to 5th, with many games in hand around the surrounding teams. The oilers biggest challenges this slide has been around the special teams. While the PK has been an impressive 32/37 over the last 9 games, the issue is that the Oilers have given up 37 pp's in 9 games. Giving teams over 4 power plays per game. It makes it hard to win games when you spend over 8 minutes a night on the PK. "It throws things off, in Philly we were shorthanded for 12 minutes, like thats over half a period of playing 4 guys in your own zone, it's tiring, throws off everyones minutes, it's just a bad place to put yourself." - Prust The Oilers during that 9 game streak have only had 17 PP's and have only converted on 3 of them "Your PP has really dried up, we need to get going again there, I think we're going back to basics and just keep firing the pucks on net." - Hall The team has shuffled up their top six, going with a 1st line of Hall - Zajac - Eberle, the first time this season Eberle will be playing on the 1st line with Taylor Hall. "It sucks that we haven't been able to score, that needs to change, so we need to shuffle up the lines a bit, get going again." - Hall The team is now past the quarter point of the season, and is hoping to pull back into the top 3 teams in the league by the 41 game mark. "We want to be an elite team, we're tried of being bottom feeders, this is our year, our goals are high and we're going to achieve them." - Hall |

Schneid-ing Down The Standings ![]() Cory Schneider has been the worst player on the Oilers during their recent slide down the standings. The Oilers are a midst a free-fall down the standings. They started the last month 2nd in the league, and end this one barely holding on to the last playoff spot. "We don't know what happened. It's like we hit a wall. Zajac plays a very close game to Pavs, so we don't think that's we we began the slide and Schneider was an elite goalie coming into our team, and so somehow things just switched off and we need to get going again." - Captain Gorges The lone bright spot for the Oilers during this streak has been the special teams continuing to impress. Despite the slide the Oilers PK has moved up to 2nd among playoff teams, and their PP which started very weak has moved up to 3rd among playoff teams. "Our PK has gotten into a groove where we're killing penalties well, we're still taking way too many penalties but at least we're killing them. Our PP is the same right now, we clicked and we'll just keep going." - Eberle The team needs better goaltending fast as they sit 8th in the Western playoff picture with Columbus 1 point behind them with 2 games in hand. It's likely the Oilers will finish this week out of the playoffs and trying to crawl their way back in. Ryan Yes-he-can ![]() The Oilers pull off back to back bock buster deals bringing in a wealth of grit and experience to their core It's no secret the Oilers have been in a helpless fall down the standings. The offence has dried up the defence has lost it's legs and the leadership group is not stepping up. The Oilers were left with no other choice but to make a big splash. The Oilers traded recent 1st OA pick Nail Yakupov to the New York Rangers in exchange for the Rangers captain Ryan Callahan. "It's hard to lose Nail, we grew close together, he's a great guy, but bringing in someone like Callahan is exactly what we need. He plays hard, he's a no nonsense kind of guy, a lot of character and skill. So we think he'll be great for us." - Jordan Eberle "I'm obviously excited to be here, hard to leave the only team I've ever had or known, but the Oilers are a solid young team with a passionate hockey city behind them. Everywhere you go you see Oiler fans. So I'm excited to be here and be part of this core going forward." - Callahan Callahan will be plugged right into the team's 1st PK, 2nd PP and 2nd Line, seeing plenty of action with fellow new comer J. Staal and Pacioretty. The Oilers hope Callahan will bring some two-way play to their 5 on 5 game which has been seriously lacking during their recent slide. "I'll try to play my game, forecheck hard, play a lot of minutes, bring some energy and hopefully we can quicky turn things around here." - Callahan |
