New Management, Season Lineup, and Expectations...

Chino Cheng took over the General Manager's spot with pride... "I absolutely love this team, always have, and I've even become attached to some of the players. It'll be difficult because I also run strict requirements for each strategy I employ. This team strategy will be different than what I'm used to doing but we will be playing to the strengths of the player's talents."

The two styles LA will be employing are flexible enough to, in Chino's words, "win any game." The first of which play to player strengths of a Passing>Hit and Grind>Trap>Chase strategy. The second strategy plays to the team's depth of Passing>Passing>HaG>HaG.
"There will be a lot of line matching," says Chino, "especially in the playoffs where it's crucial."

The list of players Mr. Cheng disclosed as being "the essence of the team with which everything will build and revolve around..."
Dustin Brown - Captain
Mike Richards
Drew Doughty
Trevor Lewis

The following list represents core players that play a major role on the team if they meet Chino's strict standards...
Jonathan Quick
Anze Kopitar
Justin Williams
Jake Muzzin
Matt Frattin

Interestingly enough, some players were not on the list. Some players have already been openly listed on the block, like Jeff Carter and Slava Voynov.

"Simply, they just don't fit how I run a team." "Carter is very talented and I would like to keep him but managing six $5 million+ contracts can hurt a team's depth. Not a problem if your coaching staff is superb at drafting and developing players but we drafted high for awhile and our coaching is meant to get the best out of our current players. Our depth is running down in the next few years and I want to be prepared for the worst case scenario so we can bounce back quickly if it ever happens. What I'm mainly concerned about is the next nine months. We'll certainly be making the playoffs, but like always, we'll be pushing for a run at the cup..."

On December 3rd, the LA Kings experienced their first loss in 10 games, and their first regulation defeat in 15, against the Edmonton Oilers, 2-0. After a 12 game undefeated streak, we got an interview with Kings fresh call up 24-year old center Jordan Nolan back in November after their 5-1 win against the Devils where he recorded an assist in his 10th game in the NHL this season.

We asked Jordan Nolan about the reason for the November tear across the league...
“We're playing like a team out there. The whole team has really bought into our system and not one player is slacking off.”

Since the loss to Edmonton on Tuesday, the Kings have gone 1-2 in their last three with losses to Calgary and Vancouver. Coach Darryl Sutter commented…
“Games against Vancouver are always close, real close. They’re a very competitive team but we’re not done yet.”

Sutter is of course alluding to the many trade rumors surrounding the Kings players. Some are worried about an impending trade with Anze Kopitar or Jeff Carter, even Drew Doughty was mentioned, but GM Cheng’s announcement after the 3-1 win against Dallas didn’t squelch the rumor mill, but he did put fans more at ease…
“We’re a competitive team and are only going to get more competitive. I won’t want to do something that jeopardizes that. And if the only offers we have don’t improve the team we’re going to sit pat until someone becomes serious.”

It's overdue but I want to cover the trade with Anaheim.

Los Angeles Trades Slava Voynov to rival Anaheim for Luca Sbisa.
Seeking to fix impending cap issues, Los Angeles traded future star defender Slava Voynov for Luca Sbisa and a 3rd round pick. The trade frees up Los Angeles for $1,991,667 in cap, enough to get them under the cap ceiling.

It may have been with a division rival, but it's just what both parties wanted. Anaheim was seeking another stable offensive defender and LA, along with needing to lose some of its weighty salary, was looking for a more stay at home defender...

"Every team needs at least one offensively capable blue-liner, but building a team around those kinds of players isn't an approach that works for me." Explains Cheng. "Under different circumstances I would have loved to keep him, but I also can't abide players who are paid more than what is appropriate. Sbisa's style fits more with the system."

They were traded immediately following their last games with their respective clubs on 10-14-13. Before the trade, Sbisa had 1 assist, 2 shots, 8 hits, 2 giveaways, 8 takeaways and a +0 in 4 games in October. Voynov had 1 assist, 3 shots, 3 hits, 3 giveaways, 5 takeaways and a +1 in 3 games. Sbisa will play one extra game this season if he stays healthy. Voynov will play one less game this season if he stays healthy.

Since then both players have been meeting expectations of their respective clubs. In just 37 games, Luca Sbisa has hit nearly 60 takeaways and already has 63 hits. It's been difficult for Luca to shake off that -13 he accumulated from being inserted into top minute role which he wasn't ready for, but in recent weeks it hadn't gone up or down. Slava has been able to amass 18 points and 3 goals in 40 games and an impressive 29 blocked shots. As the season goes on Voynov is finding his groove, while Sbisa is struggling to keep up with his poor conditioning.

Kings trade up for playoff run, a rusty start, and World Juniors Championship choices.

LA Kings welcome long time Bolt and former captain Martin St. Louis to the Purple and Black and deal Franchise Center/Left Wing Sniper Jeff Carter back.

Jeff Carter played 35 games for the Kings this season and only got better toward the time he was traded. St. Louis has only played 5 games with the Kings and assisted only 2 goals.

"We're going to see if they can't form some chemistry before moving Williams back to the Right Wing, which may work out better." Commented Head Coach Darryl Sutter.

Mike Richards was especially bummed. Jeff Carter and Mike Richards had good on-ice chemistry together...
"Unfortunately the depth chart forced Jeff to the first line, they needed him there." Explained Mike Richards. "And when Centering the 2nd line just couldn't get going."

But in the LA depth chart further down, players like Tyler Toffoli, Oscar Moller, Linden Vey, Brandon Kozun and Tanner Pearson will be ready to play top 9 minutes soon and "space needed to be made," according to GM Chino Cheng. "We're trying to go for it all this year. And St. Louis is one of those go-to game-changers that give the first line that extra punch."

Tampa will retain half of St. Louis's salary for this year, clearing LA up $2,460,227 in space. Next year, however, LA may be in cap trouble with paying his full salary of $352,273 increase over Carter's salary.

In other news, 5 of LA's prospects have been selected for the World Junior Championships (U-20).
-Jonny Brodzinski (USA); 20; 6.5D; 5TH ROUND (148TH OVERALL), 2013
-Patrik Bartosak (CZE); 20; 6.0D 5TH ROUND (146TH OVERALL), 2013
-Tomas Hyka (CZE); 20; 7.0D; 6TH ROUND (141ST OVERALL), 2012
-Dominik Kubalik (CZE); 18; 6.5C; 7TH ROUND (191ST OVERALL), 2013
-Valentin Zykov (RUS); 18; 7.5C; 2ND ROUND (37TH OVERALL), 2013

Bartosak, Hyka and Kubalik will add depth to the Czech roster but watch for Zykov to be a go-to guy in Russia and Brodzinski for USA apparently. But he might be a spy...
