Rebuilds can be fun...

Rebuilding, the best and worst word a fan can hear from their favourite team. The Avalanche have been in limbo for the last few years but that limbo dance is no more. The new management group has taken the team and embraced the rebuild. With the 1st overall pick from last season, Nathan Mackinnon, in their back pocket along with Ryan O’Reilly, Matt Duchene and Gabriel Landeskog the Avs have an awesome core of forwards to build around.

The first move the new management team made was to trade Paul Stastny to Florida for Shawn Matthias and defense prospects Michael Matheson and Eddie Wittchow. Matthias has all the potential to be the anchor of the 3rd line for the Avs for years to come. Matheson is an offensive minded defenseman who will turn pro within the next 2 seasons.

The Avs just made a 2nd move, moving energy 3rd liner Steve Downie, prospect Mason Geertsen and a 3rd Rd pick for prospects Jakob Silfverberg and Devante Smith-Pelly. Silfverberg is a skilled winger who adds to the gluten of top 6 skill the Avs have developing and Smith-Pelly has the potential to replace Downie down the line on the 3rd line.

While this season may be a bit of a struggle for wins, fans do have a lot of players of note to watch and follow as they develop.

The Avalanche Transformation Continues

The Colorado Avalanche are transforming from a young developing team to a solid team in playoff contention. 26 games into the season the Avs are leading the Northwest division with 32 points. While the Avs are surprising people around the league with their play, the team still isn’t getting ahead of themselves.

“We are still a young team and are learning as we go, it’s a process and as good as the team is playing we still can be better and there are lots of ways we can improve the team,” commented Avs GM CrazyCanuck. With that comment in his back pocket, CrazyCanuck went out and made a couple moves. First off he moved 4th line Center John Mitchell to Boston for Chris Kelly and a 2nd Rd Pick. A shrewd move getting a more experienced player who can play on both the 3rd or 4th lines and a 2nd rd pick from a team that was in cap trouble. It was a move that benefitted both teams in different ways.

A couple days later the Avs made a bigger deal sending Eric Johnson and Jamie McGinn to the Big Apple in exchange for Ryan McDonagh and Derek Dorsett. This move takes away some of the offensive depth up front but improves the defense. McDonagh is younger and a more well rounded defenseman than Johnson. Dorsett is a energy player who will be able to play within the Avs system in a bottom 6 role.

Not only are the Avs adding players from other teams but their farm team is developing players who will be stepping into the lineup sooner than later. Brad Malone was called up and will be playing on the 4th line. Fans should also expect that Mark Olver and Devante Smith-Pelly will be a part of the team next year if not this year. The future looks bright for this Avs team, and the future may or may not be here.
