I would like to know what your favorite weapon would be in a SHTF scenario. You only get to choose one weapon for hunting food and protection. The scenario is a Nationwide power outage for an extended period and you have 100 rounds of ammo or projectiles unless you find or make more. After voting, explain your choice

I would use my 30/30 rifle in a SHTF/WROL world because it is accurate and reliable.

My favorite total SHTF "main battle gun" is a Ruger 10/22 that I built. Sidearm is a Beretta 92fs

The rifle and mods:
ATI collapsible stock I added this because the stock gives a variable length of pull witch allows for me, my wife, and our daughter to be able to set it to our pull in order to use it comfortably.
Volquartsen Auto Bolt Release This allows the bolt to be operated like any other semi auto rifle.
Volquartsen target hammer This lightens the trigger pull from the standard 6-7 pound pull to 2.5 pounds for precision shooting
Volquartsen Extractor The factory extractor is a big weakness in the original design
Tasco 3-9x Scope This scope is zeroed at 100 yards, and even with cheap bulk ammo it lays a 4 inch group of 25 rounds at 100 yards. The iron sites are still on the gun.
Pistol Forgrip with Bipod Hit a button on the grip and a bipod drops out the bottom.
One Point Tactical Sling Gotta have a sling that allows a smooth transition to another weapon
Ruger BX-25 Magazines These magazines hold 25 rounds and are the most reliable you can get.
2 forms of ammo Subsonic and CCI Velocitor High velocity rounds
Bolt buff and working This is buffing the interior of the weapon to allow for it to vent the dirt and make it more reliable

Testing
This rifle has been tested 2 times for endurance and reliability. Using quality CCI ammo this rifle will fire 3,500 rounds before it starts to jam due to being dirty. With cheap bulk ammo it will fire about 1,600 rounds before getting very dirty.

Reasons
I have tinnitus in my ears (constant ringing) from firing heavy weapons when I was in the Army. One thing a lot of people do not realize is that you are not going to be wearing ear protection in a SHTF situation. Larger caliber weapons like the 5.56 or .30 cal will rob you of your hearing.
This same sound can give your position away in a bad situation. That is the reason for me carrying a supply of subsonic ammo. A .22 rifle with subsonics is only a little bit louder than a decent pellet gun. It makes it hard for an enemy to find you.
I can carry 10 rounds of .22 for every 1 round of larger caliber ammo. This means I can carry thousands of rounds without issue.
The .22 is excellent against small game, and ok against humans. For large game I carry a Mosin Nagant 91/30 strapped to my back with a very limited supply of ammo.

Partial SHTF
My weapon for partial SHTF is my Beretta 92fs. Carrying loaded rifles is illegal in most states. I would only grab my rifle if it appeared to be a total SHTF. I hold a concealed carry permit, so me having a sidearm is par for the course. In fact I have a Beretta Storm Sub compact on me right now as I type this. In a partial SHTF me carrying a pistol is perfectly legal unless I stray into Illinois, which does not honor my permit.

Reasons
Like I said above having a permit means I can be armed, so it is just a choice of pistols. The Beretta 92fs gives me magazine compatibility with the US armed forces. Good for "found mags" and parts. My 92fs has 32,600 rounds fired thru it and I have total faith in it.

Sorry this is long winded, but I want to say one more thing. If you buy a weapon and pack it away to use for home defense or SHTF you will get yourself killed. Every company produces bad weapons including Beretta, Ruger, Sig, and Glock. If you buy a weapon make sure to break it in, take it to the range, and practice with it. No one is born knowing how to shoot and move. If you are not going to take the time to practice with it then there is no reason to buy one.

Assault rifle

Not only can it be used for a riot situation but can be used to kill animals for food. Preferably with a bayonet on the end of it and hollowed out stock for matches.

You left out several other weapons from dynamite to nitro to poison pods, gatling guns. The list goes on.

My m4 clone with eotech xps2 ,Troy buis, vtac rail, moe stock, hogue grip, etc. it's light only 7.4 lbs. I can easily carry eight 30 rnd mags at 1 lb a piece. With the eotech I have fast target acquisition. Easy hits at up to 100yds, bomb proof. One of the most common weapons and cal. Also, shoots 5.56 NATO. Plus it's the weapon I'm most familiar with. For me it's my AR hands down, but everyone has a different mission. There is no one perfect shtf weapon. But really for hunting I'd use my bow. Arrows are reusable indefinitely, it's quiet, won't break down. The rifle is for defense mainly.

12 gauge shotgun with a rifled and smooth barrel would work well in a SHTF situation. I think a cheap long gun with cheap ammo would be the way to go on a budget. Maybe a Mosin Nagant 91/30 with steel ammo. Make sure you have plenty of Windex handy to clean it. Handgun, I'm leaning towards a .38 revolver with a 5-6" barrel. Hollow points are a must.

My Remington 700 chambered in 300 Winchester magnum is my fav of all of mine. I have done a lot of custom work to this one. It has a legal suppressor and a Burris Eliminator 2.With this I can reach out and touch what ever I am hunting. I have taken down a lot of large game with this gun. That way I can feed my family when needed to hunt.I reload most of my own shells. I also use a Barnett Vengeance Cross Bow it is real versatile I can fish or take big game when needed. Up close and personal I have a mossberg 500 wife and both kids can use this one pack my own shells man can it make a mess. I carry 2 side arms 1is a 40 cal and a 44 mag bull dog for back up. Of course both my kids have there own guns for hunting. Wife only uses cross bow for hunting but can use a gun if needed.

I saw this thread and decided to join!

My favorite weapon of choice would be my little Ruger 10/22, for many of the already listed reasons. It is light, relatively quiet, accurate, durable, and a brick of 500 rounds weighs next to nothing compared to my Mossberg 930 or any higher-caliber rifle ammo.

On a different note, living in MD with the recent "assault weapon" ban in place, I really like the idea of the .177 air rifle. They don't carry much knock-down power, but they are unregulated!

I would have to go with my 12 ga. Rem. model 870 wingmaster with 3 inch mag. turkey loads (#2) or maybe buckshot.

with you 100%

i have a marlin 336 that has been through a shit storm. but i must say that i would also carry a ruger 10-22 semi auto .22 rifle, they are reliable and easy to convert to full auto and is one of the most practical to do so with imo.

As a do-all gun I would say my M4 clone. Right now it wears a 4-12 scope and a set of BUIS. With my handloads it shoots 3/4MOA @100. The suppressor and supersonic ammo brings the sound level to just over 22LR. Subsonic ammo is movie prop quiet through it.
Was thinking pretty hard about my CZ 75B 9mm, I have trained way more with it that I have my AR. But for hunting for food the nod definitely goes to my AR. Besides that if I have to shoot someone, I'd hate to wait for them to get into pistol range.

I really love my Mossin-Nagant. When the SHTF for the Russians this gun saved their asses! As for having only 100 rounds of ammo, if I had to make my own I suppose a crossbow would be my 2nd choice.

Crossbow, definitely. Quiet, and you can leave them loaded unlike a bow. Also, it is fairly easy to make your own ammunition out of natural materials. The one thing I wouldn't take is a semi auto/auto rifle, as you would just go through rounds to fast when shooting at stuff, and you can't make replacement ammo.
