Sumich to Fremantle
Topic Started: Oct 5 2011, 04:04 PM (210 Views)

Approximately 15 minutes ago.

DERBY rivalry is rife in the west with Fremantle's recruitment of West Coast Eagles legend Peter Sumich as an assistant coach.
Quote:

Sumich, 43, has joined the Dockers as a senior assistant and forwards coach.

The two-time Eagles premiership player and champion goal-kicker is set to be announced as joining the Dockers late on Wednesday.

Since playing a leading hand in West Coast's 2006 premiership as midfield coach and senior assistant to his great mate John Worsfold, Sumich has often been head-hunted by Dockers management.

He had discussions with Fremantle after the 2005 season and turned down offers to be senior assistant to then head coach Chris Connolly.

The Dockers appointed Mark Harvey as Connolly's understudy in late 2005 after Sumich stayed loyal to Worsfold after West Coast had lost a famous grand final to Sydney by just four points.

Harvey took over Fremantle from Connolly after Round 15 in 2007 and was sacked in sensational fashion last month and replaced by St Kilda coach Ross Lyon.

Revitalised Eagles forward Mark Nicoski said the players were distraught at Sumich's departure.

"Really devastated that we have lost Peter Sumich as a senior assistant. He was a mentor, friend and coach. Wishing him all the best," Nicoski tweeted.

Sumich joins Lyon in a revamped coaching division after negotiations with Dockers football manager Chris Bond.

Dockers management is keen to inject some more established Fremantle personnel into their football department.

Sumich is a revered Fremantle personality after launching his decorated Eagles career from local club South Fremantle.

He held recent discussions on a possible move to Brisbane as an assistant to head coach Michael Voss, as well as publicly declaring an interest in St Kilda's vacant senior position.

His shock departure to join Lyon comes after it is understood to have already accepted a new two-year deal to continue at West Coast alongside Worsfold.

Sumich played 150 games with West Coast, kicked 514 goals and was a member of the Eagles 1992 and 1994 premierships, alongside captain Worsfold.

Looks like RossGo didn't waste much time. Very handy pick up for Fremantle.

What the hell? Totally unexpected - leaves us with a bit of a blank up forward. Thank goodness Scott Burns didn't leave as well. Who can we fish for to be our forward line coach now? Philip Matera? Matthew Lloyd now that he is out of contract with Channel 10?

Matthew Lloyd would be a great pick up, not sure that is ever going to happen though :P

We won't be getting Matthew Lloyd, love the lateral thinking though Maddison :P

It may well be a good move for both parties. Sumich wants to be come a Senior Coach and with us he has achieved all he could, he was a midfield coach and a forward coach. Fresh start on our side as well, I think a new partnership would bring fresh ideas.

Hoping Burns gets the role as Senior Assistant Coach.

Totally surprised with this one. I wander if he was approached by Fremantle or if he approached them. Maybe we just wanted to promote Burns or Walsh to 2nd in charge and Sumich decided it was just time to move on.

Or perhaps Fremantle just made a better deal.

I wouldn't mind seeing us chase Scott Watters and bring him back home, would be a good replacement for Suma.

Regardless of what some of you are saying, he is going to be a big loss to us. Midfield coach during our peak and now our forward coach, ironically now our strongest point. For him to be a Senior Coach though, he needs a fresh start somewhere.

Thanks for the service and best of luck Suma.
