Longmuir replaces Suma

Former Fremantle Dockers footballer and up until today one of our development coaches replaces Sumich as our new forward coach.

The West Coast Eagles has today appointed Justin Longmuir to the position of forwards performance coach as the replacement for Peter Sumich.

In doing so, the club has promoted from within, elevating Longmuir after he had spent the last 12 months as a development coach.

The former Fremantle ruckman was delighted to accept the appointment and said he was looking forward to assisting the club’s push towards a fourth premiership.

“I’m just really excited and grateful to the club for the opportunity,” Longmuir said.

“I am really looking forward to working even more closely with John Worsfold and the other coaching staff as we strive to improve on last season.

“It’s a terrific opportunity and I look forward to sinking my teeth into the role when pre-season training gets under way next month.”

The affable big man played 139 games for the Dockers in nine seasons before his career was cut short by injury, and he relished his role as a development coach over the last year.

Longmuir has quickly developed an affinity with the playing list and made a strong contribution in 2011 - something he will be keen to build upon next season and beyond.

I would have liked someone external, given we lost the experience of Sumich... Some new blood in the box would have been useful imo.

How does our coaching structure work?

Fitness and Conditioning > Head coach < Strategy and Innovation

Line Performance Coach

Line Development coach

It is amusing how many rumours have been on this thread that are self-perpetuating but never reach any level of actualisation.

Mmm, I don't know.. Jlo has been there during the development of this side, and might not be such a bad choice given he knows our press etc.
Would say, given his previous role, he may have a broad knowledge of our strategies and can pickup the deeper details of this role sooner than someone new.
