• The government of the Modern Socialist Republic announced the launch of $500 million worth of 10-year bonds today, marking the return of Tehuacán to regional credit markets for the first time in almost a century. "The move reflects the newfound confidence that investors have in Tehuacán as a viable economy and a stable trade partner," Economic and Public Finance Minister Carlos Pena said. While still the poorest country in the region, Tehuacán's natural gas and mining-dependent economy has expanded an average of 4.7 percent over the last seven years, fueled by the beginning of lithium mining in the rich deposits of the Salar de Uyuni, which holds an estimated 43% of Catena's reserves of the valuable mineral. While Tehuacán's growing economy has stoked investor interest, experts warned that Tehuacán's government has not always been willing to repay its debts. "We still recommend purchasing the bonds, but with caution," a statement from the Commonwealth's Delger brokerage firm read. The statement also expressed concern that indigenous groups and environmental activists may attempt to block further mining in the Salar de Uyuni, which would cause a significant setback to the Tehuacáno economy.

• In a speech before a group of Altani veterans today, Khan Arslan renewed calls for Valadia to relinquish control over the Kharkhorin Islands to the Altan Ulus. Valadia took over the two northern Kharkhorins in 1956, after a brief war with the Altan Ulus over the disputed islands which the Altani lost. The Altani government has never formally relinquished its claim to all three Kharkhorin Islands, which are known as the Maillionian Isles in Valadia.

"The Kharkhorins are, always were, and always shall be Altani land," the Khan said, calling for new negotiations over the status of the islands. Valadia has routinely rejected calls to discuss the status of the islands, which the Empire claims were historically part of Valadia. The Khanate still retains control over the southernmost Kharkhorin Island, which Valadia also claims.

• The government of the Empire dismissed calls to discuss the status of the Maillionian Isles, issuing a terse statement that the Khanate of the Altan Ulus "accepted terms that formalized the historic status of the Isles as sovereign Valadian territory over fifty years ago" and that there was nothing to discuss.

Republic of Santuana
In an international press conference President Miguel Aguirre announced the birth of Aguirrian Communism, which had been named after him by it's adherents, and the Republic of Santosa's becoming a Communist nation. To mark this change the old Santosan flag was lowered for the last time and a new flag raised to the raucous applause and cheering of the Santosan people. With this unexpected change Santosa becomes the first Communist nation in Catena and due to it's size and influence, a major player on the international stage. President Aguirre gave a statement after the announcement.

"It is for the people and so that their voice might be heard that Santosa embraces the ideals of Aguirrian Communism. We stand as a beacon of brotherhood and solidarity in our region. Let it be known that the Republic of Santosa shall henceforth be known as the Communist Republic of Santosa!"

It is not yet known how the region will react to this change especially due to the fact that Santosa is large and strong enough to resist and oppose even mighty Valadia itself.

• Commonwealth officials had no reaction to the decision by Santosa's government to adopt Communist policies, other than to state that the Commonwealth "will continue to view Santosa as a friendly state, and as a valuable partner in restraining Valadian aggression in Catena." Experts believe, however, that the relationship between the two nations will grow slightly more distant due to the general distaste for Communism in the Commonwealth. The exception may be Akamia; the Modern Socialist party there is second only to the mother party in Tehuacán in terms of size, and socialist beliefs are increasingly coming into vogue among Akamia's intellectual and political classes. The MSP-Akamia issued a statement of support for the political changes in Santosa.

• Tehuacáno officials praised the switch to Communism made by the Santosan government, calling it "a great day for Catena, and for humanity" for one of the region's major powers to make such a change.

"We welcome our Santosan brothers and sisters into the community of Socialist and Communist peoples, and will work with them to further advance the cause," President Felipe Huanca said. Huanca dismissed the lukewarm reaction of Commonwealth officials to the change, calling the Commonwealth "a declining power humbled by its own hubris" and "an isolationist, reactionary holdover from the past." Huanca further pledged that Tehuacán would do everything it could to support the new Communist government in Santosa.

• The Communist Republic of Santosa confirmed it's intent to remain on good terms with the Commonwealth despite ideological differences. President Aguirre, settling into his role as Communist President and Communist ideological leader, commented on the future of Santosan relations with the Commonwealth.

"The Commonwealth was a much valued and respected ally even in the days before our glorious revolution," he said in a public statement "we will not be shunning now that he have embraced the truth of Communism. The Commonwealth people are free and content under the rule of their nation, we bear them no ill will. I believe that although we follow the ideals of Aguirrian Communism and they were own that we can still work together towards our mutual benefit. I would also like to assure the Commonwealth government that we will not be forcing our ideals on them in any way. It would be wrong of us to do so, should the Commonwealth wish to follow Communism, and I'm not saying they do, then they must seek it out for themselves. We will not be thrusting it upon them, to do so is a vile imperialist technique. I would also like to thank the Modern Socialist Party of Akamia for their statement of support. The Communist Republic of Santosa officially acknowledges and recognizes the Modern Socialist Party of Akamia and greets them in the name of brotherhood and solidarity. Socialism is the little brother of Communism, we commend them on having the courage to take the first step."

• The Santosan government thanked the Modern Socialist Republic of Tehuacan for it's warm gesture of support. Santosa stated that it wishes to maintain a close bond with Tehuacan not only due to their ideological similarities but also because of a common heritage and culture shared by the two nations. Ever a busy man President Aguirre made another statement officially thanking Tehuacan for it's support.

"On behalf of the Communist Republic of Santosa and it's people I would like to thank the Modern Socialist Republic of Tehuacan for your kind words and gestures of support," he said "we greet you in the name of brotherhood and camaraderie. We hereby acknowledge and recognize the Modern Socialist Party of Tehuacan and its just leadership of its nation. As I have said before, socialism is the little brother of communism and we intend to work with our Tehuacano friends towards a common goal. You may not be communist but you are our kin."

• The Imperial government had no formal comment on the new Communist regime in Santosa, describing it as "a minor matter." However, Valadian social media and news sites were abuzz over the change, and most of the commentary was not complimentary. "It seems like the Santosans want to emulate the Tehuacáno, because Tehuacán demonstrated how successful Communism and Socialism can be, over the past three decades....if by 'success', you mean 'creating the poorest and most inept state in Catena out of what was once a successful nation,' one prominent Valadian blogger said. Another writer said that "the Communistic Red that nations such as Tehuacán and Santosa want to cover the region in has nothing on the red of Valadia - our crimson and gold banner, and the Empire over which it majestically soars, have proven time and again to be the more successful model, and will continue to do so."

In several polls, most Valadians asked indicated that the change of government had lowered their opinion of the Santosan regime.

The Communist Republic rejected the Valadian reaction to its embracing of Communist as nothing more than the nonsensical mutterings of an oppressive imperialistic power. Contrary to what some Valadian officials suggested the Communist Republic of Santosa remains a wealthy, influential and powerful nation on par with the Eternal Empire. President Aguirre spoke on the subject.

"The Valadians refuse to acknowledge that we have formed and embraced our own breed of Communism because they fear the looming presence of free and united Communist power on their doorstep. In their arrogance they simply cannot understand that our people have made this choice of their own free will," he said "I merely officially established their wishes and Tehuacan has not influenced our decision in any way. If Valadia thinks they are so mighty and untouchable then I say this, your oppressive imperialist regime cannot stand. If you think you are so mighty then come out from behind those silk curtains of yours and face us like men. Or are you to afraid of the truth of our ideals? You fear Communism because you do not wish for your people to be truly free, you wish to continue oppressing them. Your words are but the petty insults of a child, in the end it will be deeds that future descendants will remember. We reject and oppose the Eternal Empire of Valadia and all that it stands for."
