Saya Sil's eyes darted to one side as though taking the awkward moment as a chance for escape. They soon settled on Bryar once again, however, and she was forced to break the silence.

"I don't know..." she confessed. "I guess... You might start by gathering wood." She studied the surrounding forest with a few sweeping glances. "But you would need something to chop the wood. D... Do you have an axe?"

The girl's white brows lowered. Compared to the industrious villagers of Vancorde, this Bryar seemed too willing to help and not quite capable enough to follow through. Nevertheless, she would grant him the chance. Perhaps it would save her a few weeks' work with the grumpy Mr. Frank.

Bryar had to stop his thoughts immediately to think on that. An axe? Oh of course he didn't have an axe. Come to think of it, Bryar wondered if he had ever touched an axe before in his life.
He sighed and shook his head, "Er... No.. No I don't have an axe. Sorry."

Well that failed, he figured. But oh well... not like he'd know how to use one if he even had one to begin with.
He couldn't help but shrug a little. Guess a house would have to wait.

Saya Sil's lips tightened anxiously. Though she made her best effort to restrain the poor habit, she found herself streaming tears almost immediately. Her chest trembled with the force of her inner turbulence.

"I... I see..." the sheridan girl sniffled. She took two steps backward without minding her footing and tripped over a ground root, spilling at once onto her back. The impact filled her damp eyes with shock for a moment. As soon as this passed, however, she broke into a chain of muffled sobs. She could hardly understand why she allowed this stranger to raise her hopes. Her trembling form tightened into a ball when she considered that Bryar must still have his eyes on her despite the pitiful display. More than anything, she longed to escape him and forget the incident ever happened, but her body refused to move.

Bryar immediately felt horrible when the poor girl began to cry. He made a move to reach out and touch her to comfort her but she was already backing away.
When she tripped and fell over, he nearly gasped, "Oh!"
He watched her for a moment longer before he knelt down and took her by the arm, helping her get back to her feet.
"Are you alright?" he asked, genuinely concerned.

Saya Sil squealed when the suspicious man seized her arm. Her knees wobbled beneath her, threatening to bring the sheridan back to the ground even after Bryar helped her up.

"I... I..." she stammered, hiccuping between syllables. "I don't... know... what to... do..." She backed into a tree and rubbed fiercely at her tear-coated eyelids to remove the blurred screen over her vision. Each time the man's gray eyes became visible, more water tumbled out.

"I just... want to go... home..." she sobbed.

Bryar held her steady but also gently for a bit before letting her go to show he wasn't going to hurt her.
"Shh," he said, trying to comfort her, "It'll be okay. Where.. where is your home?"
He looked around as if expecting to see a town or building in complete plain sight.

Whoever this girl was, she needed protection, he decided. She looked as though she wouldn't last a day out on her own.
"Here," he said, holding out a hand, "Do you need help? I can help you."

The girl's red eyes popped wide open and fixed on Bryar's outstretched hand. If she touched it, Saya Sil was certain the man would never let her go. She imagined his fingers digging into her wrist without remorse.

"Don't touch me..." she pleaded. "Please..." She shuffled around the curve of the tree's thick, red trunk. Rather than answering his questions, she just frantically shook her head.

"I don't know... I don't remember..." the girl lied. Though three years had passed, she knew she could find her mother's home again if she so desired. She would never lead a human there, however. If she cast aside all her progress and returned shamefully to her mother's woodland home, she would do so alone.

Bryar snatched his head back as it was refused. He nodded in reply as if knowing. She was still afraid of him it seemed.
But who wouldn't be? He could be a rather scary guy.

He listened to her a moment then scratched his head, thinking of what would be best to say next to her.
Should he offer her a home still? Build one? Buy one?
Yeah with what tools and what money? he asked himself.
He sighed at the thought of home. It had been a long time since he had the pleasure of calling anywhere his home.

"Well hey," he finally said, "Do you want to go to a town for the night and find an inn? I might be able to find just enough money on me to buy a room for a night."

Saya Sil detested the idea, especially when she realized the underlying meaning - they would share this room until morning. She held her head low so that her long bangs veiled her eyes as she struggled to keep them free of tears. Setting foot back in town she could tolerate; Saya Sil had spent enough time in Vancorde of late to convince herself the villagers meant no harm. Though she had never stayed at an inn, she clung to the impression that it was a safe and comfortable means of shelter. If it didn't mean waking up each morning in the heart of a human civilization, Saya Sil agreed that she would prefer that to tempting the wolves each night with fresh meat. The important fact was that there might be people about the village as dusk approached. Saya Sil couldn't defend herself, but the presence of other people might deter any brutish behavior.

"O... Okay..." she said after settling down considerably. With another sniffle, she raised her horned head and pointed past Bryar in the direction of Vancorde. "There's... a human village that way, about two miles from here." She couldn't fault this man for his refusal. At least he treated her with courtesy.

Bryar waited while she thought his idea through.
It would make complete sense to him if someone didn't trust him, because NO ONE trusted him ever. He earned a reputation for being that way.
But if anything could help it, he'd at least try to make such an odd but interesting girl feel a little more safe.
Or he'd try to.
He WANTED to.
She looked like she needed help. And what better person to help her than someone like him who's trained to watch people and know when one of them is plotting some sort of mischief. That's what Bryar thought at least.

He felt a bit relieved when she said 'okay.' He would have felt a bit terrible to leave someone like this out in the woods alone at night.
He looked to where she pointed and nodded. There was a town that way. Okay.
"Alright," he replied, "Hang on a second though."
He stepped away for a moment and soon returned with his bag in hand, "I can't go anywhere without this. Well I'm ready to go now."
