The sheridan puzzled at Bryar's strange reintroduction. What reason did any person have for using multiple names? His given name suited him well enough, unlike hers. Such a smooth-sounding name hardly matched with her disfigured horns and range of pitiful expressions. She sank her teeth into her tongue to quell the storm of criticisms stirring internally.

"Well..." she murmured, trailing off. After a period of silence, she walked to the corner of the room and took a seat with her arms folded over her bent knees. There was a lone window on the adjacent wall, so if necessary, she decided she could escape that way. "I'll just be over here..."

Bryar nodded absently and laid back on the bed, staring up at the ceiling.
He was so used to sleeping outside under that stars and never really cared to spend hard earned (or usually hard stolen) money on an inn room and a bed when the ground suited him just fine.
But he couldn't say no to the sweet Saya Sil. There was something about her he just couldn't quite shake.

He sat up a little after a few minutes and finally noticed the bed problem.
"So," he said to her, "Would you like to sleep in the bed? I don't mind taking the floor at all. I'm used to it."

Saya Sil shook her head insistently without loosening the grip around her legs. As tempting as the soft mattress was, she didn't expect to remain here for the full duration of the night. Once Bryar drifted off to sleep, she would slip out and return to her carefully stashed savings. If Bryar slept soundly on the floor until dawn, the bed he paid for would go to waste.

"Here is fine," she said too quickly. "Just here." The sheridan's hair obscured her face as her body slumped forward against her knees. Her vibrant, red eyes remained fixed on Bryar as they peered through the thick strands.

"They aren't really bad people..." she added in a faint voice. "The farmers."

Bryar looked over to her then nodded and looked back up to the ceiling, laying back down, "If you're entirely sure. But I tend to be a gentleman as often as I can and don't much like the thought of leaving a pretty girl on the floor while I hog the bed."

He stared at the ceiling a bit longer before sitting up again, hearing her murmur something that had the word 'farmer' in it.
He arched an eyebrow in confusion, "Hmm? Did you say something?"

"N... No..." Saya Sil stammered, hiding her face. She couldn't bear to repeat it, as now she realized she would have to explain if Bryar understood the whispers of her heart. The entire story from her arrival in Vancorde to meals with Farmer Gregory and his wife would take a while - and she preferred not to speak so much with anyone, especially a near stranger. She steered the conversation far from the subject as soon as possible.

"I like sleeping on the floor," she said. Saya Sil pulled some of her long, white hair back in her hands and clutched it to her chest. "It reminds me of home."

"Home," Bryar repeated.
He tried to relate to that word. He hadn't had a home since as long as he could remember. Most days he didn't much care, but occasionally he wished he could have such a home again.
He'd be happier, he figured, Somewhere there was always fresh food and a warm bed waiting for him.
The thought made him happy and he had almost forgotten where he was.

He looked up again and smiled comfortingly at Saya Sil.
"It's nice to have a home," he told her, "I haven't had one since I was young ya know... I lost.... everything.."
He laid back down with a sigh, not sure why he had just spilled that.
He rarely told anyone details even as small as what he had just said.

Saya Sil remained silent, reflecting on her own losses. That Bryar didn't have a home of his own made her shoulders tense. She could not expect a man without a home to build hers. Instead of commenting, she curled up on the wood floor and pulled her hair over a shoulder. Her cheek squished against the floorboards as she lowered her head.

"What are you doing now?" she asked. "Why are you here?" Ordinarily, she didn't spend enough time around other people to have such a normal-sounding conversation, but as she had no chance of immediate escape, she found herself blurting out questions.

Bryar shrugged a little in response before answering her questions, "Well.. for starters.. I came here looking for.. I guess really just something better."
He paused a moment before continuing, "I've been running my whole life and I'm starting to get sick of it. What I REALLY want is just a place where I won't be chased any longer... somewhere I can be free." He smiled a little, now thinking of all the things he wanted to so badly, "I want to get out and see everything... to adventure and run wild and have fun.."

He was on a role now and sat up, grinning at Saya Sil, "I want to quit thieving and become an explorer or something. Oh! Maybe a sailor... Haha... I love the sea.. Have you ever seen the beautiful seas? There's something about big open waters that just makes me happy.."

"The sea scares me," admitted Saya Sil with a labored sigh. She imagined herself getting sucked out into the ocean by the tide and subsequently eaten alive by aquatic life. Similar things could happen on land, but at least she belonged ashore. Saya Sil had no place at sea where sharks, whales, and all manners of deadly fish could end her life.

"It might be nice to see the world... I've... never actually left the woodlands." Though she entertained the idea of travel, she couldn't possibly do it alone, nor could she endure another person's company acting as her guide. By virtue of her anxieties, the sheridan girl was doomed to life among the redwoods. She grabbed her wrist unconsciously as she considered growing old without accomplishing anything, without ever overcoming her disabilities...

The tips of her fingers, including a quarter-inch of her fingernails, had darkened to pitch black. As soon as she noticed, she stuffed the hand between her legs and whimpered. How had the strange shadows of the forests to the north followed her here? She certainly couldn't allow Bryar to discover this; he might call the guards and have her quarantined. She couldn't hide it forever, either, as the tight veil of shadows covering her flesh gradually ascended to her wrist.

Saya Sil's entire body tensed as she willed herself to fight its progression. If she could buy enough time, everything would be alright... If only she had never agreed to this! She glanced briefly at the window with an urge to escape suited more to a wild animal than a woman.

Bryar seemed sad that she didn't appear to like the sea as much as him.
He gave a slow nod and sighed in reply. The sea WAS scary. It was true. But beyond the scary parts there were such wonderful things.
He had seen all sorts of beautiful and amazing creatures and places by travelling the sea.

When Saya Sil mentioned it being possibly nice to see the world, he grinned, deciding that if she ever wanted to, he would show her the cool things he saw about the sea.
He continued to smile at her, "I bet you'd like some of the things I've seen. Good ole Bryar's traveled aaaaallllll over the place and he's seen real cool stuff."

In the dim light he couldn't see too well but he noticed she was holding her wrist and quirked an eyebrow. He wanted to ask, but soon thought better of it and decided to say more about his exploring.
"Well," he started again, "Someday if you ever want to leave here.. I would gladly take you with me on an adventure. It might be fun."
