"The trees here are big." Aru remarked, twisting her upper body and swinging her arms as she stood in place, her nose pointed up at the sky. "And there really are three suns!" she blabbered on, now spinning in a circle on the heels of her feet. Her hair spun around her as Aru continued to spin, making herself slightly dizzy before she stopped.

"Oh, what are we looking for?" Aru asked, staring at Legend with an excited smile.

Legend rubbed his temple where he collided with the redwood. He couldn't tell whether it was the impact or the prospect of introducing such a simple girl to a vast foreign world that made his head ache, but he hoped it would pass soon. He laughed at her childish behavior and grabbed Aru by the hand.

"We're going to find a town," he explained. "Most towns should have at least one mapmaker, so we can figure out our current location and decide which way to travel from there." In the foggy memories of his uncle's easygoing lectures, he recalled that the Knives Empire was covered in redwood forests. With an uncertain gaze, he wondered if they could have landed so far from his home...

Aru grabbed hold of Legend's hand and nodded at him in response to his explanation. She took one more look around the forest before she was tugged along by her arm. Aru's head snapped around to face forward, along with the rest of her body. She quickly trotted up to Legend's side when she realized she wasn't pulling her own weight, still holding onto Legend's hand.

"What kind of place has such massive trees? They look red too. Red trees don't sound healthy." Aru pondered aloud, her gaze drifting off course again. "The air is dry here, too."

"For sure, we're several days away from Glandive," replied Legend with certainty. He took in the sight of so many redwood trees with nearly as much wonder as Aru, although less of his reaction was visible. The environment struck him as more open than the jungles of Largo and almost definitely safer for the typical traveler, but whereas he had learned wide stretches of those jungles, he had never encountered these woods. They could only wander until new information gave them direction.

"They look pretty healthy to me," he argued. "Look at how thick they've grown." He knew better than to suggest the whole forest had been infected with some horrible disease; the Knives theory seemed more plausible each time he revisited it. The greater question at hand was whether they landed near the Faust-Knives border or deep in the southern woodlands.

A red barn became visible through the arrangement of trees. As they neared, Legend spotted smaller buildings lined in rows beside it. They hadn't fallen far from civilization, apparently.

"That looks promising, huh?" Legend asked his companion. An armored guard with golden crosses painted on his uniform stood near the barn, speaking with an unsociable fellow in solid black. Legend began to sweat just imagining himself in such dark clothing on a summer day. The effects increased the closer they walked.

"Days away from Glandive?" Aru asked with a solemn expression. In Lariona this usually meant Aru would have to travel on foot from town to town, so she assumed it wouldn't be much different. Her legs ached at the thought of walking for so long, but she was still counting in Lariona time which meant everything was doubled.

"Are we closer to Fret than Glandive, or Glandive than Fret?" Aru asked, tugging lightly at Legend's hand. She had yet to notice the guard standing further down the path, but did notice the bright red color of the barn in the distance.

The moment she did see the guard Aru straightened her back, like a dog when its name is called. She had never seen a male dressed so heavily in armor and didn't know what to think of it. The armor the man chose was thick and looked heavy, unlike her own Lariona version. The pointed edges of the armor also made him look like a monster that had horns shining in the light of the three suns.

"Is he going to stop us, Legend?" Aru asked, tugging a bit harder at Legend's hand this time around.

As if answering Aru's worry, the guard glanced back at them. His stern eyes narrowed at the shirtless man and his poorly clothed traveling companion. With a quick word to the grumpy-looking individual in black, he broke off their conversation. The guard strolled directly into their path, warranting a full stop.

"Good morning," Legend said politely. The guard chewed on his own tongue with a scowl before returning the same greeting.

"Good morning. Aren't you two a little underdressed? I'm going to have to ask you both to cover up while you're in Vancorde. This is a decent town."

"We would, but we lost some of our belongings in the woods..." Legend explained, rubbing the back of his neck. The blood on his hand caught the guard's eye. "I don't suppose you have a couple extra sets of clothing lying around."

"Not for a pair of suspicious vagabonds," grunted the guard.

"Listen, we can work for it." Legend held up his pickaxe in a nonthreatening manner and smiled warmly. "I'm Legend Blueshard, a miner by trade."

"There aren't any mines around these parts."

A miserable sound appeared in the distance, growing louder with its approach. A sheridan with one horn significantly longer than the other ran blindly down the street. Her flowing, white hair trailed behind her body as she sped toward the group with streams of tears dampening her cheeks. The tattered clothing over her chest and waist served as a reminder that although Aru's clothing didn't cover her entire body, it was certainly in better taste.

As swiftly as the wailing girl appeared, she zoomed past the guard and the suspicious travelers. It seemed there would be no end to her frantic bawling. As she disappeared into the woodlands, she nearly stumbled twice for the poor stability in her trembling legs.

The guard covered his face with an armored gauntlet at this pitiful display. When he turned to follow the distraught sheridan girl, he held up the same hand to warn Legend and Aru.

"You're not off the hook," he told them both sternly. "If you haven't found clothes or a job by the time I see you next, you're out of here." The guard raced after the girl's shrinking form with his boots clanking heavily on the worn village path.

"Well... Alright..." muttered Legend. "Let's see what we can find."

The girl who scattered past in a tattered cloak and managed to drag the guard away briefly captured Aru's attention. The white hair trailing behind the shrinking figure shocked Aru, since she had never seen anyone with such oddly colored hair. Her attention was quickly turned back to the guard before he left them, with what she considered unfair orders.

"But, I am fully clothed." Aru complained, her arms crossing beneath her chest. She looked down at her fur pelt, scale male, and her bare legs. "My uniform is the accepted attire for a guard in South Town, a civilized town itself. Why do males not accept this style of dress?" she asked, turning her head up to face Legend again.

"Well, accepted attire for anyone in Largo is questionable here, so it's not such a huge surprise." Legend peered back at the forest where the guard and horned girl disappeared. He had never seen anyone with bones growing out of their skull, but according to his uncle, such creatures fought on the front lines in the ongoing war between Faust and Knives. In that light, he didn't mind that they avoided both the pestering guard and the horned banshee. Legend turned to the man clothed in black outside the barn.

"Hey, do you know where we can..."

"Don't talk to me," the grumpy man snapped. He adjusted his black cap and stepped into the barn.

"Weird town, huh?" remarked Legend. He strolled down the street with his eyes peeled for anything resembling a mapmaker's shop or a villager in need of service. They approached a street side display of clothing operated by an elderly woman with quite a bit of jewelry on her neck and fingers. The old woman smiled amiably at Aru in particular.

"My, what a beautiful outfit," she remarked with wonder in her raspy voice. "Where ever did you find it?"
