"He's helping, isn't he?" Legend asked with a shrug. He could hardly judge the man after watching the first girl's shackles drop to the ground, followed shortly after by the second and third. Filthy or not, he had rendered them a valuable favor. Legend stood with Aru at a comfortable distance while Oyster attended to the rest of the waiting women. As they were freed, some of the sheridan women immediately retreated into the thick forest. After such a traumatic experience, Legend could understand their intense fear. He smiled at those who lingered to express their sincere thanks, however. "I hope you don't mind my asking," he wondered with the sheridans gathered around, "but why did those men capture you in the first place? Does this happen often?" "No..." one woman replied, gripping her bone-like horns in her hands. Hers were much shorter than the rest, but Legend thought they had character. "I heard rumors of this far to the south, but it only started in this region recently. I don't know why the humans are doing this. They've captured our mates..." At the mention of the captured males, many of the remaining sheridans tensed. Legend's lips sank into a frown. "I saw that," he confirmed. "I don't know if we can catch up with their carriage, but it doesn't hurt to try." |

Aru couldn't help but frown at some of the sheridan women. A few of them seemed generally upset that their mate had been taken away from them. Aru looked up at the sky when Legend suggested going after the other cart of people. "I don't know if we would catch up." Aru thought aloud, staring at the three suns until she could see spots then blinking wildly. "Do we even know which way they went?" she asked, shrugging her shoulders at Legend in the process. |

"More will come." Oyster looked over at the two standing next to each other. "Even if you find and punish these men, more will come. Don't waste your time punishing them. As an old man said once 'why shoot the messenger'" Oyster gathered the shackles together and put them into a pile. He didn't like leaving a mess, at least if its nice and neat, someone who can use whatever he leaves behind will be more likely to pick it up if its already nice and neat. |

Aru took a moment to look at the strange dirty man, an extremely confused expression on her face. She understood that more guards would come, and that it was probably no use to try and chase the cart that had taken away the males. What Aru didn't get was his last phrase. "We did not shoot anyone." Aru blinked, placing a hand on her spear. "I use a spear. Not bow and arrow." |

"It's a turn of phrase," Legend said while patting Aru on the back. He turned to the sheridans once again and addressed them as a group. "If you women know somewhere safe nearby, I recommend heading there now as a group. You'll be in less danger if we stick together. I'll do what I can to find the men who were captured afterward, but your lives are still at stake." The half-conscious crusader with the broken jaw watched them depart with a venomous glare and a trail of blood oozing out the corner of his mouth. "Middlebrook isn't fair," chimed in one of the horned women. The black streak through her blond hair stood out among the group of freed captives. She pointed southeast into the redwoods. "It's one of our largest settlements." "Middlebrook? We're that far north...?" another woman gasped. Legend fixed his eyes on the blond sheridan. "Take us there, if you would," said the miner. One sheridan held a longing gaze on the narrow woodland path, her feet planted firmly in the dirt even when the rest followed their guide into the trees. Legend stepped into her line of view and frowned. "I won't stop you if you decide to pursue them, but even if you catch them on foot, what will you do?" The woman remained silent. After Legend turned and joined the group, she hesitated for several seconds, but ultimately followed. "This doesn't make any sense..." Legend muttered to himself once redwoods surrounded them on all sides. |

"What happened to them?" Aru asked, looking at the sheridan girl with a perplexed expression. She was admiring the horns on her head when the girl covered them up again. Aru frowned and turned away, not sure how to respond. "Aren't they just people like us?" Aru asked, walking a little faster to make sure she could stand by Legend's side. |

"I always thought the sheridans were allied with Knives in war, but they certainly aren't being treated like equals. That man said something about a decree from the king..." Legend wondered if any such decree existed. The robed men could just as easily have acted on their own, which would explain the incongruity between his uncle's war stories and the apparent reality. "You are not from around here, are you?" asked a sheridan walking alongside them - the woman with the black streak in her hair. When Legend's head turned, she added, "My people have not fought in the war with Faust for over a decade. It would be nice if the killing could just end... But maybe Emperor Dirac resents us for secluding ourselves in the forest. Maybe that's why we've been hunted." "That's no reason to order the capture of an entire race..." insisted Legend. "Neither is territory a valid reason for war." He couldn't argue with her there. |

"So it sounds like we got a problem going on here." "But politics or not, those who ran away are soon to be back with reinforcements to search for survivors. We should relocate ourselves before we gather our thoughts so that we can act rather than react if they come back." Oyster enjoyed the fact that he was included in a conversation, but he could never forget that safety is always key in the wild. He would stick around to make sure that this new group didn't need more help, but he was not going to risk his life and freedom to wait and find out. Edited by bobo_da_17th, Sep 6 2012, 02:14 PM.

"The dirty one is right." Aru remarked, turning and nodding at Oyster. She didn't mean to be rude, but Aru had no name to call him by. "We should stop, plan ahead, and introduce ourselves." she went on, looking in the stranger's direction. "Is there a thicker part of the woods we could hide in near by?" Aru asked, turning her attention to the sheridan female. |

"You wish to stop?" the blond sheridan asked. She examined the surrounding woods as though assessing their distance from the crusaders' camp and Middlebrook. "I think we're far enough away for the time being," Legend said with a nod. The sheridan's eyes crossed with his, but she didn't comment. She led them toward a dense patch of redwood trees not far off-course. When the group settled, Legend spoke up first. "I'm Legend Blueshard," he introduced himself. "Everyone calls me Blue... Personally, I'm not fond of my first name. I'm just a miner on his way north. I don't have any deep reasons to be involved with this mess, but I can't just ignore what I've seen. I guess I'm not really in a hurry, anyway." "I am called Meila," said the blond sheridan with a bright, dazzling smile. She stroked the base of her horn as she leaned against one of the ancient trees. "I hail from the lands far to the south, but recently, I have been living off Impa's grace in these woodlands. I never expected the crusaders' influence to spread as rapidly as it has... They captured me in my sleep. There was nothing I could do." A few of the other sheridans expressed similar stories in sympathy to Meila's plight, but their interest soon fell back on the trio of saviors responsible for their freedom. They studied Aru and Oyster in sudden silence. |
