It didn't matter where or how far. She just had to run. "Nowhere is beyond my reach," echoed its voice. The crackling sound of its words remained just as crisp and deadly as when she first heard it. Saya Sil rushed through thick forest, panting and already drenched in sweat. Despite the warning, she couldn't just sit and wait for her destruction. "I am with you now," it had said. "I am with you always. Wherever you go, I will follow." Her heart hammered in her chest like a ringing alarm. Every shadow in the surrounding trees seemed ready to lash out at her, to finish off this fragile girl on her last legs. "And when I choose," it had promised, "I will consume you." The previous night, as Saya Sil finally managed to relax, her eyes lingered on Bryar stretched across the single bed in their room. Somehow, this man was willing to risk his life to protect her. It didn't make sense; they had only just met hours before. The thought put her mind at ease for the first time in a while, however, and the sheridan girl faintly smiled as she drifted toward sleep. Her arm pulled the length of her white hair against her curled body on the wood floor. She forgot all about her plan to abandon Bryar and escape with her savings. Somewhere in the dreaming lull, everything fell apart. Saya Sil found herself in the redwood forest with a thick mist surrounding her. Without any recognition of how she came to this place, she wandered aimlessly between the trees. In time, a nagging sensation pulled at her chest. The further she roamed, the tighter it pulled at her heart. Saya Sil realized this and turned back, but it didn't matter which direction she traveled - the result was the same. The grip on her heart tightened like a clenched gauntlet. "You do not understand," it whispered for the first time. The sound ripped at her ear drums as though driving needles into her head. She dropped to her knees to cower in fear. "It is time for that to change," the harsh voice continued. She clutched at her chest as the pull tightened. When her hand closed on a pitch black chain, her eyes widened. The dream scenery all around began to fall apart in the mist, transforming into something more like a watercolor painting. She seized the chain in her hands and desperately tried to resist the pulling, but it was far stronger than Saya Sil could bear. Slowly but surely, the man on the other end of the chain drew her closer. The shadows of the forest came alive. With whispering and howling noises, they circled around her like phantoms. Saya Sil's panicked screams reached no one's ears. In this place, she was completely and utterly alone - save for the deathly voice speaking directly into her mind. "You will run, as you always have..." it hissed. "But remember..." Nowhere is beyond its reach. Snapping out of the memory of her vivid nightmare, Saya Sil stumbled forward. It was more than a dream, she knew. The dark magic behind her possession on two occasions was undeniably tied to the voice echoing from her dreams into reality, and if she ignored it, she would only endanger Bryar. It didn't matter where, but she had to run. |

Bryar was still fast asleep on the be, not knowing about Saya Sil dreaming so vividly and waking. He was having dreams of his own. Dreams of money. Friends. A home. Even adventure. They were the best kinds of dreams a thief could have and the only kinds of dreams Bryar liked. He loved his adventure and wouldn't want a life without it. Sometime in the night his dreams were broken off and he slowly drifted back to consciousness. He kept his eyes shut, not really wanting to be awake right now, and let out a soft groan in annoyance at the fact that he had even woken at all. He thought he heard someone moving around and was about to go for his dagger before realizing it was only the girl and he rolled over to try and get back to sleep, not thinking anything was wrong at all. |

A sudden pair of firm hands on her shoulders interrupted the stream of dark thoughts plaguing Saya Sil. She shrieked on contact and attempted to wriggle free, but that quickly proved impossible. The hands prevented her from escaping, and before long, her body whirled around at her captor's will. She stared into the face of death itself - a jet black being with glowing, red eyes and hair flickering outward like black fire. An instant later, an ordinary human face stared back at her. The grim expression of a Vancorde guard leveled on the sheridan. "What's wrong?" he demanded. "What's gotten into you? You better explain quick - I've got business back in town." Though Saya Sil couldn't recall, she assumed she must have passed this man on her way out of Vancorde. Her eyebrows scrunched up in a panic. Even though she recognized this guard from the crown city from earlier encounters, she never trusted a man in plate armor. "N... Nothing..." she lied. If she brought yet another person in reach of her curse, she would never overcome her guilt. "You seem more upset than usual," the guard said with a scowl. "Tell it to me straight. Did something happen this morning?" "N... No..." she said, legs beginning to shake. The tremble moved up her body until she could hardly still her torso with her arms crossed over her stomach. Her white fur coat slipped on her shoulders. "Maybe it's none of my business," he finally decided. The armored guard turned around and threw a hand in the air. "If you need to talk, don't be a stranger." For some reason, his shadow seemed to sneer back at her. |

((Meddlesome administrator steals the day.)) The keeper of the Sleepy Tree Inn had much on his mind that morning between bills to pay, breakfast to prepare, and guests to entertain. Somehow, despite his busy schedule, he found the time to check up on the young couple staying at the end of the hall - as he recalled, an enchanting sheridan woman and a strapping, black-haired gentleman. They hadn't turned up for breakfast or for the usual morning chatter over news from up north. In truth, the innkeeper would find no surprise in a ripe young couple enjoying one another's company late into the night and dozing well into midday, but if he didn't lay down the law, the local youth would catch on before long. He preferred not to encourage such promiscuous habits. The innkeeper's knuckles rapped sharply on the door. "Sorry to disturb," he called against the smooth wood, "but if you're staying the day, I'm gonna need a cash advance." |

Bryar snapped awake at the sound of someone knocking at the inn door. He groaned and sat up, then looked around the dim room for Saya Sil. Was she still here? Too tired to look further, he stumbled over to the door and shook his head, trying to wake up more, before pulling it open and answering. "Yes?" he asked, "Whass wrong..?" He noticed it was the innkeeper and stared a moment before clearing his throat, "Oh.. sorry.. We were um.." he looked back into the room but saw nothing but darkness, "Um.. just leaving.. Sorry.." |

"It's no trouble," the innkeeper assured Bryar with two snappy nods. "Just leave the key on the counter on your way out. Eggs're cold, but you're welcome to have some anyway." As the man turned away, his eyes lingered on the dark room. With the lamp's flame extinguished, most of the light spilling in came from the hall, but it was enough to confirm that the sheridan girl had already departed. The innkeeper's brow flattened. "You did say we, but... Never mind, it's not my business. Hope you enjoyed your stay." |

Bryar watched him leave, still a bit drowsy and confused. He groaned and stepped back into the room to get his things so he could leave. "S.. Saya Sil?" he asked sleepily. There was no reply and he cocked an eyebrow before looking about the room. Yep. Sure enough. Gone. He sighed a little and grabbed his bag, hoisting it up and over his shoulder, before stepping out into the hall. Where did she go? When did she even leave? He was usually a light sleeper so he found it amazing that he had been apparently that tired as to not have noticed her gone. And it was a bit saddening to have his only companion gone like this. He figured she really must not have liked his company. It was too be expected, however. He always had that bit of a sinking feeling that told him she'd have up and left while he wasn't paying attention. He shrugged and soon made his way down to the lobby, setting the room key on the counter as he was told. He looked around one more time before heading outside into the morning air. |

Saya Sil could no longer keep her bearings or her wits. Her right arm was coated in a homogeneous, black coating that gradually progressed toward her shoulder. Whether she fled, paced back and forth, or whimpered in the grassy bedding of the redwood forest, it continued to spread. She wouldn't be able to protect herself once it seized control - of that much, she was certain. Her knees knocked together as she stumbled her way through the woods. Breathing became laborious, and as hyperventilation set in, so did her vision swim. She trudged through the forest until her legs gave way beneath her. Saya Sil's face smacked against the earth, tossing clods of dirt into her mouth. She spat the mud balls out as soon as she pulled her nose out of the soil. And precisely then, she lost control of her right arm. Her body collapsed on its side as the black-coated arm released its support and turned instead toward her bare throat. She hadn't the time to hesitate. With teeth clenched over her bottom lip, Saya Sil grabbed her arm beneath the elbow and bashed it into the earth repeatedly. Her muted whining turned into screams laced with fury and fear in equal parts. At the top of her lungs, the girl struggled to disable her arm by any means, no matter how drastic. |

Bryar, with his bag slung over one shoulder, moved along, walking slow. Where he was going he wasn't sure. He traveled far and spent every tiny bit of his money to make it this far and then spent what was left for a room for the night. For the girl. Saya Sil. He could have more usefully slept beneath the stars and spent the money on something better. Food? Passage to the next town? Maybe a bribe of some sort? Either way, that mattered not. he was broke again, tired, confused, oh so confused, looking around for Saya Sil. She really was gone, wasn't she. Without realizing where he was off to, he was in the woods. He looked around, not having meant to come here. He must have came back this way on accident. While thinking of the girl. After this is where they met. The woods. He took another step into the silent woods when a scream pierced the air, killing the quiet atmosphere in an instant. He took a second longer for him to recognize the scream. Saya Sil. The girl! She was in trouble? He hissed through his teeth and bolted through the underbrush of the forest, branches and bushes smashing into him almost painfully as he ran. He didn't care. His mind only told him one thing right now and one thing only. Save the girl. He pushed through another thick set of brush and threw his bag to the ground to be able to run faster without it slowing him down. He was lost bow but again that didn't matter. He soon enough came to an end of his pursuit, finding the girl finally. "S.. Saya!" he cried, panting, "S.. ah.." He couldn't catch a breath enough to speak anymore, but had enough energy left to do what he could to help. He raced to her side and grabbed her arm, attempting to hold her steady. Just what was going on here?! He grabbed both her arms under his and tried to hold her. It was hard as he was worn out from the run and from waking early. He didn't even have the strength or wind to say a word, panting loudly instead and on the verge of passing out. Thieves like him weren't the best at cardio. They usually preferred hiding over sprinting. It always worked better. Especially for Bryar. Man, he reeaaally needed to work out more. |

It didn't make sense. In this maze of redwoods young and ancient, she should have been left alone to die - and yet the same powerful hands held her arms down, preventing either of the conflicting forces in her body from destroying itself. She recognized Bryar the moment she saw him, and yet, Saya Sil could hardly comprehend it. Why had he come here? How had he found her? The questions swirled in her mind as the shadows wormed their way around her right arm like a dark shroud. Her body tensed from the sensation of contact. Even so, that contact was what kept her alive. Her beaten arm still threatened to terminate her feeble existence if Bryar changed his mind. Considering how she abandoned him in the deep of the night - even for his own benefit - such a development wouldn't surprise her. "Bryar..." she whined. "I'm sorry..." |
