Wells mentions Bethea and Davis as possibilities here. Crazy as it might sound when looking at the numbers, I'd definitely consider franchising Vontae before Bethea. Let Bethea test the market if it comes down to that. Unless he's willing to be reasonable, it might be hard to lock down Vontae. He's not been consistent enough to earn big money long term. Not yet, but might be worth the big investment for one year to see how he performs. http://espn.go.com/blog/indianapolis-colts/post/_/id/4031/franchisetransition-tags-colts |

Franchising him would cost around 10M+. I'd offer 5/35 with a 5M signing bonus. |

He is, but they tagged him last year. So it would be tag $$$ plus 20% or whatever it is when you use the tag on the same player two years in a row... |

IMHO, there is no one not under contract worth tagging. |

McAfee actually under performed by his own standards this year. No way he is worth big money or another franchise tag. Sign or walk, Pat. You're a punter, one who hasn't even been top 5 in the league, never mind a Pro Bowler. Losing Davis would hurt. He has great potential and he's honestly been the best corner we've had in a few years. He played hurt a lot down the stretch last season. Franchising him would mean you ultimately have to pay him more than he's worth when you do sign him, but he's one guy I'd be willing to over pay, at least on a shorter 3-4 year deal. Yup. At least against the cap. But if he exceeds expectations or performs to his potential, have some bonuses that bump it up to 9-10 mil. I think he'd be cool with that. |

In all honesty, I think his potential is that of a solid player, but not exactly a shut down C.B. Not meant as a knock, but just an honest assessment. I would love to have him back, but at a rate commensurate with his talents. I would let a market be established for him if I was Grigson, and not rush into a hasty decision. Caveat is that he's like 25 years old. Major plus. |

Young and pretty physically gifted. Not a freak like his brother or those Seattle guys, but still... I think he's already pretty solid, just not all that consistent. He has the ability to be a shutdown corner... any given Sunday. Just not consistent enough to be paid like a shutdown corner. That's why I think a contract with incentives is what he needs. That way he CAN get paid like a shutdown corner, or close to it, if he can be a little more consistent throughout a whole season. |

Has a lot to do with the talent around you. Sherman is great sure, give Davis a healthy year in the same spot could he be that good? Yes, I think so. |

Sherman is a freak. Davis will never be able to manhandle WR's off the line like Sherman can. Sure, Sherman pushes the envelope there a little more because he knows the guys behind him will have his back, but he's still a freak. And probably one of the only CB's that can actually shutdown these 6' 3"+ freak WR's that every other team seems to have... Don't forget that his guys benefit from this, too. Nice knowing you can do pretty much anything you want back there because your top CB wont let the other teams top WR get 5 yards past the line of scrimmage before the ball is thrown... |

Who is right now? Davis might be able to get up there with Peterson or Haden, but Sherman is a different type of animal. Edited by BlueKoolaid, Feb 20 2014, 12:01 PM.

Neva. He ain't as athletic and isn't the true playmaker that those guys are. His strengths are tackling and toughness, along with credible cover skills. Just not outstanding, imo. |

You're right about his strengths. I just wonder if he builds more confidence in himself and his teammates if he will start making more plays. He might not be a "playmaker" like Peterson, but he is still athletic and just as strong, or stronger. His instincts and consistency aren't up there with them, but he's still very solid and can improve to the next level, IMO. |

Sherman plays in one of the best, if not the best, secondaries in the NFL. He's the flavor of the moment like Revis a few years back. Very good, but Davis can be very good as well. Maybe among the best. He's certainly played like it when healthy. |

Revis would still be one of the top backs in the league if he hadn't been hurt and then forced to play in a system that is not compatible with his talents. |

Revis, Haden, Davis, your prototypical type of corner. Around 5'11", 200lbs. Athletic, tough, etc. Sherman has almost 4" on those guys, and the wingspan to match. He is a different animal. Really, a shutdown corner is a shutdown corner. If a QB wont throw your way, doesn't matter what size you are. But a guy that can actually look eye level with these giant WR's out there... there aren't many, if any, that can do it like Sherman. I am curious to see how he holds up, though. Once he loses a step, his height aint gonna help him all that much like it still does with WR's... Edited by BlueKoolaid, Feb 20 2014, 02:19 PM.

Look, I like Vontae a bunch...but he's not in their league. Haden and Peterson are huge talents. Peterson also returns punts and could probaly play WR in a pinch. Haden is maybe the most underrated player in the league. Revis is coming off of knee surgery and was mis-cast last year by a horrible coach. When healthy, he was deemed as the best dfender in the league. I expect him to be just fine this year with a year of healing and Lovie. |
