Problem is you're replacing one 4-3 MIKE with another, albeit a much better/durable player. He and Freeman are almost identical in size and style. I hope he's good in coverage. I suspect the contract reads as such: 4M signing bonus...3.5 salary in '14, 3.5 in '15, 5.0 in '16 and 6.0 in '17. Edited by errsay, Mar 6 2014, 03:55 PM.

1. Free agency ain't free, as was stated already. 2. It is 11 million guaranteed. Worst case he is terrible, and cut after 2 years and being paid 11 million. Up to his play whether he sees all 22 million. 3. I think some are going to be very surprised with the contracts tossed about this offseason. The cap went up 10 million, and is projected to go up significantly the next 2 years after this. Teams have a lot of money to spend. It wouldn't make any sense for teams to have tens of millions more dollars to spend, but for contracts to stay the same. |

Looks like an 11M bonus. http://www.indystar.com/story/colts-insider/2014/03/06/dqwell-jacksons-contract-with-colts-give-salary-cap-options/6127733/ The most important facet: We're told by someone in the know that the overwhelming majority of Jackson's $11 million in guarantees is limited to the first two years of the contract. The guarantees are tied mostly to roster bonuses and base salary. Only a minimal amount – I'm still waiting to hear the exact figure – will be paid in the form of traditional signing bonus. Why is that important? Because it gives the Colts flexibility. Take, for instance, the worst-case scenario: Jackson plays poorly or suffers a significant injury. In such a situation, the Colts could cut their losses after two seasons with few salary-cap implications. Had Jackson received a large signing bonus, a prorated amount of that bonus would have been applied to his salary-cap number for each of the contract's four years. Apparently he turned down a bigger offer to play here. And Chud played into that along with Pagano's rapport with players. And Andrew Luck didn't hurt either ;) http://www.indystar.com/story/sports/nfl/colts/2014/03/06/indianapolis-colts-sign-lb-dqwell-jackson/6115491/ "Once I became a free agent and I was allowed to speak to teams, (Chudzinski) was one of the first calls that I personally made,'' said Jackson, whose contract recently was terminated by the Browns. "He's a big part of me being here today. I thought highly of him last year when he was my head coach in Cleveland. "He hasn't been here for a long time, but I trusted his judgment.'' DATABASE: Stay on top of NFL free agency with the Star's interactive Jackson also got favorable vibes during a dinner meeting with Pagano. He came away impressed with the "family atmosphere'' of the organization. |

Great post and thanks for taking the time. I will say it again...I don't always agree with who Grigson brought in last year in particular, but he's been masterful at the STRUCTURING game. |

I'm glad Angerer wasn't part of our plans. He really didn't play well this season, and his lack of speed/athleticism showed. Can't fault his work ethic, attitude, etc., but just wasn't going to work. Jackson doesn't look like that great of signing for that much money, but we will see. We really need big uglies. And free safety. |

Smallish ILB's mean you'd better be stout up front. NT needs to be looked at too. |

I would imagine we'll shoot for more contracts like this, paying most of it over the next two years before Luck and others become free agents. |

So it turns out all 11 million of his money in guaranteed in the 2014 and 2015 season. If the Colts want to cut him after two seasons, they are only on the hook for $500,000 of dead money. Nothing wrong with this contract. He is a good player, and can easily be cut if his money is needed to pay others. |

Which is what makes it acceptable, even though I would have preferred Spikes. |

Another caveat to this signing indicates that we won't be drafting Chris Borland. |
