http://www.wgr550.com/Source--Bills-unlikely-to-keep-Byrd/18497378 According to a source, the Bills and Jairus Byrd may be parting ways soon. Byrd is set to become an unrestricted free agent, and the team has until Monday at 4 pm to place the franchise tag on their star safety. I'm told that it's unlikely they'll use the tag and that it's unlikely they'll reach an agreement before that time. |

I would love for us to go after a safety in free agency, but I get the feeling the Colts are going to stick with Bethea and Landry, unfortunately. |

Love to see Bryd in the shoe But folks are saying he is looking for 6 years and over 50 million If we can afford great. The experts say he is best cover free safety in NFL |

He's the one player I'd stick my neck out for in this year's FA crop. 6/50M is about what you'd expect a top Safety to net. He would be the correct compliment to Landry, Bethea wasn't/isn't. Vontae is probably gonna net more when all is said and done. |

I agree about Byrd. He'd keep us from being able to sign other guys we want, but he'd make losing Bethea and Davis not such a big deal. We'd still need to sign someone at CB, but they wouldn't need to be at Vontae's level to workout. |

I for one would take Byrd/Shields over Davis/Toler in a heartbeat. Then focus on another CB in the draft. Either round 2 or 3. Good year for CB's coming out... |

Adding Byrd would be big. Bethea is worse than a lot of fans realize. I'd be good with Byrd/Shields, or Byrd/Davis, but there will be a bidding war and can we count on winning it? It's a careful balancing act, don't want to lose Bethea/Davis, if you can't seal the deal on the better player. |

I feel confident that the Colts could land Byrd with a highly competitive offer, especially if Davis bolts. No need to bring Bethea back for any reason. Not with Landry sticking around... |

Landry is even worse in coverage though than Bethea. At least Antoine is a fall back if you can't land Byrd, but that's what I mean about it being tricky. If you're not careful, you could end up without either one. |

Good Lord, that's my point. No sense in pairing a weak cover S with another one. Been there, done that. Can't have those 2 back together again next year. |

Bethea and Landry aren't the same guy though. Bethea has been free safety most of his career, he's just not as good at it as he used to be. He had two, maybe three solid years (most of that was playing next to Bob Sanders) and has declined since. He's not a hard hitting, crash down against the run kind of guy either. Not a strong safety. My point, the one you're ignoring, is that he's better than many other options if we can't land Byrd, so we have to be careful. |

One talent Bethea has is he plays every week He is durable. That is a talent that some folks do not have Edited by cedjss, Mar 3 2014, 09:21 PM.

I respect all that Bethea has done for the Colts in his career, durability certainly being one. As for his role going forward...any team that signs him had better have a ballhawk type playing alongside him. He's lost more than 1 step in coverage, and his skillset now equates to that of a strong safety. Landry's skillset is that of an undersized WILL. On another note: James Jones just stated on the NFL Network that he wouldn't mind playing with Andrew Luck. I could see this happening moreso than signing Decker. Who knows what Grigson is thinking? Free safeties though don't tend to get the same amount of wear and tear, and when you're an average player, staying healthy only helps so much. To me, to have a really strong defense, you need a top tier safety. We either sign one, or start looking for one via the draft this year or next. |

Would love to upgrade at safety, but feel there are bigger needs than someone better than Bethea. Love to get Bryd , he is a different maker, but we need another center and guard, sign one to two CB, defense line help and an inside LB |

If we ARE going to pull the trigger on a big name, Byrd is the guy. I hope we can land him and have enough to fill some other needs. |

Yes, I'd love to get Byrd, but with the salaries of Toler, Landry, and Davis (or his replacement), we don't need to add Byrd's huge salary to the rest. Bethea isn't perfect, but after watching the likes of McGlynn, Satale and our LB's/DL out there, I think that we have more pressing needs than S. |

The Bills are offering Byrd 3 years at $10 mill/year. Like I said, Bethea isn't perfect, but we don't need to be paying that amount for a S, especially with Davis' situation still unresolved. |

A guy like Byrd could be a real difference maker though and make up for some of our other problems. Would be nice, but I'll still be surprised if he hits the market and we land him. If we sign Bethea in the short term, we have our answer. Honestly, I think the chances Byrd ends up a Colt have to be 10 percent or less.

Absolutely he's a difference maker, but the money... I read in an article. maybe linked here, that Pagano mentioned that Landry has to step it up this year. I still think that a Bethea/Landry tandem is still decent for the money. Throw in a healthy Toler along with Davis and Butler, and I'd be much more worried about other positions on the team rather than the defensive backfield. |

You had me until you said a healthy Toler...You pay for talent, age and durability. Bethea has the latter, while Byrd has all 3. Bethea and Landry simply weren't very good last year. Why repeat the ordeal? Besides, Landry might be a cap casualty in 2015 if he doesn't show alot more bang for the buck. Edited by errsay, Mar 4 2014, 02:34 PM.

The point is moot anyway - Byrd isn't coming to Indy. He'll be in the Meadowlands, Philly, or even staying in Buffalo long before he'll be in Indy. I am more interested in the D'Qwell Jackson visit this week. At least he'll be in the building. Edited by Coltny, Mar 4 2014, 02:56 PM.

I would prefer DL and LB too, but if you can't get a game changer at those positions getting a game changing S is a great idea. |

http://www.indystar.com/story/colts-insider/2014/03/04/former-browns-standout-would-help-upgrade-defense/6014527/ We need MLB help, but I'm not that excited about Jackson. If he's replacing Freeman, who is a near mirror image of him, then okay, but Freeman isn't bad. We need a strong inside LB to pair with him. |

I hear that Jackson is a 4-3 guy, and that he wouldn't fit our scheme. I don't want to sign a guy who isn't comfortable in what we're doing here. I'd rather stick with Freeman if we had to choose between the 2 in a 3-4 style defense. |

He can play in a 3-4. The Browns have gone back and forth (from 3-4 to 4-3) multiple times since he's been there... |

Realize this, but I've read where he was more effctive in the 4-3. |
