The Browns used the transition tag on Alex Mack
Will pay him like 10 million
I guess Browns knew he would not resign with them

IIRC, the Transition tag means the Browns can match any offer, but if they choose not to, he walks with no draft pick compensation.

Also means Ward is not getting tagged.

Paying a Center something in the neighborhood of 10M seems ludicrous to me. No reason not to sign someone like Smith or De La Puente for half that amount.

Average salary for a center is 5 million
Good ones are closer to 10
Satele who was ranked the 32 best center in 2012 and the 31st best center in 2013 is to make $5.1 million in 2014

That's obscene what the browns are paying him. I mean, it doesn't even make sense for him to do a long term deal.

From Pro Football Talk:

"With the franchise tag for offensive linemen only $1.654 million higher and the Browns having $57 million in cap space, they arguably should have just used the franchise tag.

While it’s possible that another team will sign Mack to a contract that more accurately reflects the center market, there’s no reason for Mack to do a long-term deal unless it pays him a lot more than $10.03 million guaranteed. His best move could be to take the money for 2014 and hit the market next year.
Unless the Browns want to pay him $12 million under the franchise or transition tag in 2015."

Kind of bewildering to me what the Browns did.

I figured that Mack would get big bucks somehow, but the way that the Browns went about this is a head scratcher.

I guess they want whoever their new QB will be to have a solid center year one, but seems unlikely Mack will sign with them long term. Over paying for a center is just stupid.
