NFL Free Agency busts

I see articles all of the time about the biggest NFL draft busts, but don't think I've ever seen one on biggest free agency busts, which are arguably more damaging to a team. What would be the top five worst free agency signings in Colts history? And I'm talking money, contract length vs production, so someone like DHB wouldn't count.

Craig Erickson don't know the exact figures though. How about that DT we got from the Eagles and the Colts released him?

Simon, I'm too young to really go back further as there weren't a lot of big FA signings under Polian.

It was a long time ago, but if memory serves correct we traded for Erickson and he was only here 1 year. 1995, Harbaugh came into the first couple of games in relief and then took over the starting job and led us to a dropped hail mary away from the Super Bowl.

But my pick for biggest FA bust would be Simon.

I don't know numbers, but Chad Bratzke was hyped to all get out when he was signed.

Eric Walden? Greg Toler?

Bratzke didn't live up to the hype, but I wouldn't classify him as a total bust either.

The book is still out on Walden and Toler.

There were a few from Polian's early years that were worse than Toler and Walden have been so far.

Mike Wells, Christian Peter, the defensive end whose name I can't remember who had the drug problem.

And what did they get in FA? Not much. Poor examples.

Considering they all provided little to no production for a Colts team that badly needed to improve it's defense, I'd say they're good examples.

There was also Kerry Collins. That sure worked out well.

Being a free agency bust requires a huge contract. It's kind of like draft picks. Guys in the 4th or 5th round who don't pan out aren't busts, they are guys who just didn't make it. Toler was 3 years for 15 milion and Walden was 4 years for 16 million. Worst case scenario, they just aren't as good as we hoped they would be. The lack of upfront money, or big money at all, means they can't really be "busts". If Vontae signed this huge deal with 20 million up front and then went in the tank, that would be a bust.

Because we've never really gone after big money free agents, it's hard to think of any real busts in our history. There could be some I'm forgetting though.

Not sure he got much money but Brandon McKinney didn't play a down as a Colt to my knowledge. Corey Simon has to rank up there pretty high. Fredd Young, but he arrived via one of the dumbest trades Jimmy Irsay ever made.

Collins helped get us Luck. What kind of production are you looking for from a couple of slugs? Peter had character issues on top of limited ability. Don't make them out to be some sort of Albert Haynesworth's. They were paid close to nothing. Corey Simon is the one guy that hurt significantly. No others, which is pretty good in this day and age.

If we want to get into trades, we've had quite a few that were awful.

How was the Booger trade?

McFarland contributed to our Super Bowl run, but I've always thought people gave him too much credit. He played that one and only season for us then got hurt. We gave up a second round draft pick to get him. Good trade, yes because he helped us win a SB. Outstanding, no.

I'd rank the Rison and Hinton trade for the no. 1 pick to get Jeff George as one of the worst.

Yes. Irsay made that beauty and the Young beauty, as mentioned. Any time you trade a #2 pick for a key component toward a SB, I'd sat that's outstanding. Just went to prove what a legit UT did for that defense, which is what Simon was supposed to provide.

At least unlike others, Irsay was wise enough to get out of the GM role.
