Good, I think. Depends on the contract.
So much for early reporting on potential signings. I always view any 'tweet' with a great deal of skepticism anymore.
Verner must have come in as a message to Vontae that there are other cb's out there.

4/39M...20M guaranteed. Polian almost croaked on ESPN.

Not our fault. Blame the Dolphins for this one with that brutal deal they set the market with.

Bent, I'd have posted a link but the story had just broke on NFL Network

I got you. Looks like it came from multiple sources at about the same time.

And once again, Mike Florio is wrong. I really hate him.

That's a big contract, but it's what the corner market is dictating right now. It's a 20 million dollar gamble that Vontae pulls all this talent together and becomes a consistent pro. I like it. I think it puts us out of the running for Byrd though, which makes safety a huge priority now with Bethea gone.

Florio is an assclown. He had Vontae going to the Jets last night...

The guarantee is a bit high, but Davis is young, already a good player, and the CB market has been set pretty high. I didn't expect him to get anything less than this.

Depending on what transpires in the next 8 weeks, I fully expect Grigson to take a WR and S in rounds 2-3, which happen to be strong areas in this draft.

Ouch. Knew it would take that much in all likelihood, but had hoped it would be more around the 8mill mark.
What are we left with? Still need a free safety and NT on defense.

We signed Jones, his cap hit will be about ~7 million year one, Davis will be about ~10 million year one. And Vinatieri lets say 2.5 million. (You never know how contracts are structured until the details come out, it could be more, could be less).

If we started today at 36 million like the reports said, that leaves us at about 20 million give or take a few million. Important to remember that without a 1st, not much money has to be set aside for rookies.

Honestly, I don't think the Colts ever had any intention of letting Davis get away. They just wanted to see what they'd have to cough up to keep him. End of the day, this is better than franchising him, but not too far off from what the tag would have cost.

Right, center and free safety. I don't think we're really looking for a NT. Chapman is still developing and we have depth there.

I think G/C and S will be spots filled later in the week when the bargains start happening. I'm still looking at WR and potentially a pass rusher for big(ger) money.

He got the exact same deal that Shields got. Pricey but fair, I guess...

Looks like Irsay reported this on Twitter, too, right at about the time it was breaking.

Haven't seen any of the big name receivers signed yet.

I wouldn't expect much more in FA going forward. I figure we have about 14M or so left...

This signing is also nice because we already had a second round pick of sunk cost in Vontae.

I imagine we'll sign a journey man type nose like we did with Franklin last year and/or draft someone. I don't know that there are any studs out there that are worth chasing hard. Safety might be a similar deal at this point too with a lot of the big name guys falling off the board quickly. Honestly, with the market falling off at some of our need spots, it increases the chance we might see a bigger named receiver(there aren't any real HUGE ones out there, but there are some talented guys) coming our way to free up that draft spot for a safety/nose/corner. I still think we sign a vet interior linemen in the next couple days. The next week is going to go a long way to sorting out the draft and next year in general.

If the Colts could somehow sign Dietrich-Smith, it would be a great finishing touch.

Agreed. Sounds like the Giants are pushing hard for him though.

I think it was unspoken but understood we were only going to be able to keep Davis or Bethea but not both. I think we made the right choice here, it may be more money but Davis still has youth and much more upside.

Bethea was getting worse year by year. His signing in SF suggests to me their defense will be weaker.
