Sounds like insurance as much as anything.

Key quote: “He will provide strong competition at the center position.”

He started all 16 games for cowboys in 2011

I suspected the Colts would look at him when the Cowpokes cut him loose.

I still don't think this rules out Mack. But if it does, there's still the rest of FA, the Draft, and June cuts.

Hoping this is a minimum deal to add depth and competition and not us being done looking for a center.

That's my thinking as well. Costa surely couldn't have cost much. Insurance policy.

I can't say that I think this is an upgrade from Satele

If he is just depth the Colts must not have any faith in Holmes

Holmes is a big question mark. Could be they want Costa to back him up, or that he might not even have a job if they're still pursuing Mack.

I suspect those of you hating on Costa are just Hulkamaniacs.

Costa sign 2 years for 2.7 million
ESPN is saying according to sources Colts have given up trying to get Mack
Maybe next year we can get him

This can't be it. Get ED-S if you have to. This has to be a joke. How is this an upgrade at Center? It's not. i don't like this one. at least it's cheap

The contract is up to 3.5 million apparently, I guess with incentives. Costa hasn't been a starter consistently since 2011. And he wasn't all that great then. He was inactive most of last year. Grigson's track record with linemen to this point doesn't make me feel any better either.

He can allegedly play guard too, which I guess is the one advantage. Just when I was warming up to this offseason.

Great. Another one to compete with the already inferior talent we have at center and right guard. If we can't find someone who can win the job handily over who we already have at center, then we ain't looking hard enough.

Why didn't they make a push for Smith?

Sounds like he's "in the mix." Since we have the most important player standing behind center, I wish we'd gotten someone who is more than "in the mix."

The offseason is 3 days old. Step back from the ledge. Not every signing is a starter, nor a splashy big name.

NBC Sports had Costa as 10 best Free Agent center out of 20
Guess who were 19 and 20?
19. McGlynn
20. Satele

Many said we couldn't do worse than Satele, so ...
Mike Wells' thoughts on the situation:

I agree. Probably done pursuing Mack given the cost, but doubt we're done pursuing options at center.

If this is the best we can do we better get a damn good OG to replace McGlynn. We can't go into next season with at best minor upgrades (if even that) at both of those positions. We have to fix at least one of them.

Our upgraded center/right guard combo right now is Phil Costa and Hugh Thornton. I mean it might actually be an upgrade, but not by much. I'm just hoping there's more coming, but I'm not convinced there is.

This isn't an upgrade at all. Costa is a bum and I'm calling it now. Luck is too important a commodity to allow this in front of him. If Luck gets injured, then they have no one to blame but themselves. Not Costa, nobody. You get what you pay for.

Living in Arlington TX I have to listen to the local Sports Radio and read the local newspaper full of Cowboys stuff. As I recall, Costa was not that highly regarded by the sports analysts here and although Tono Romo threw for a lot of yards, the OL for the Cowboys has been a big concern the last several years. Romo with his scrambling ability was able to escape quite often but he also was sacked more than the Cowboys would like and the running game hasn't been very good for the 'Boys the last few years which leads me to question somewhat the Colts signing Costa. The good thing is he came cheap.

He seems like a wasted million dollars though. 1, he's not going to start for us. 2, he's not going to be our top backup (holmes, anybody?). they need to get out there and sign either ED-S or Mack...hell, even get us De La Puente. we need SOMETHING. this guy will be worse than Satele and i'm losing my mind even thinking about how bad this can end up.

i know i should step off the ledge, but why spend a million per year when we don't NEED to? if we do happen to sign mack, then holmes can learn from him or move to Guard and play there. point is, Costa isn't a starting C. he wasn't the starting C in DAL last year, and i damn sure hope he doesn't for IND either. It's like they get off watching Andrew running for his life back there. It's exciting that he can move like he does, but all it takes is one guy rushing through the OL and grabbing him at a bad angle, and he injures his leg while trying to escape. i don't want this at all.

You don't sign a center for 2 years at up to 3.5 million because you are about to sign another much more expensive center too. Especially not when you drafted a center in the fourth round the year before. We aren't going to go into the season with 3 centers. I mean, I really really hope this isn't it and I'm completely wrong, but I think we should all prepare ourselves for the reality that unless we are drafting another center or pick up someone way later in free agency, this may be what we are going into camp with at center.

In which case, guard just became a huge need.

Maybe they are already giving up on Holmes?
