Nicks is in the number
Davis only counts $6 million against cap this year
This number also has Brown in it,

Okay so can we just go ahead and get a good Center already then? What are we hanging onto all this money for? All the expensive players are gone

Colts might be trying to create away to get Mack
If Browns offered Mack to us for a #2 draft pick this year would you jump?

Why should we? He's not eligible for compensation if he signs with another team, so...

Dietrich-Smith signs w/ Bucs...4/14.25M

Okay, ED-S is gone, no more messing around. What I have read is that the Colts have all the way till June or July to sign Mack. Costa CAN play guard as well. So maybe not everything is as it seems.

Browns tell Colts, either give draft pick or we will match
Browns have more cap space

Can't go crazy over a Center. Love to have him, but I ain't selling the farm. We need to stockpile picks, not discard more.

Browns can play that game all they want, that's stupid management. If they wanted to sign him long term, they would have already done it. Colts have a lot of time to sign him. I'm reading till June or July. Let the Browns waste their money and then pounce.

If that is the case, then Nicks' deal will count 5.5 if he hits incentives and Costa is 1.2. So we have about 11.1 left in cap room.

Enough to sign one more starter and have enough left over for the rookies.

It would be nice to know exactly how much they have left. The above figure is probably off by a million or 2.

Incentives can't "hit" until after the season, in which case, how is that "accounted"?

I think I have heard incentives hit on next years cap
On overthecap.com it says we need only $600,000 cap hit to sign our draft class as it stands now. If we up or down it would change. They say you need 2 to 3 million during year to sign players if injury occurs. Not sure how the practice squad effects the Cap number
So on high end we need 5 million for everything. Plus 3.5 for Nicks and 1.2 for costs
So we have easily at least
So very conservatly we have just over $8 million
Plenty of room to sign 1 or 2 very good players
I am sure there are several more cuts coming by June 1
We need a safety and center. We need another CB or 2. We good use another big body on defense line. So I think we are in very good shape. Some of these we should get in the draft.

Jared allen as a olb to bring pass rush from other side?
Adam carriker would be a solid 3-4 de
Kevin williams as a nt
Shawn phillips as a olb
Woodson or collins at safety?

The money left could bring 2-3 pieces to make this d great

Phillips is still a good situational edge rusher and Nate Allen had a nice year at Safety for the Eagles. Pat Sims for N.T.

I don't think you can build a "great" defense almost entirely through free agency, which is what we seem to be trying to do.

You build "great" thru the draft. We all know that to be true. Baseball being the only possible exception. Free agency is for filling needs, while the draft is for taking the BPA.

None of the guys i mentioned would be full time starters but would be great part time players who would bring plays on d. Great depth guys at this time of thier careers. Playmakers on d. Thats what you do in free agency. Yes draft for future starters. Free agency for current or just past prime playmakers.

I heard an ex-GM on my local sports talk station discussing a simaler situation with the Ravens. I believe what he said was that the team has to account for the incentives the year the incentives would kick in.

So, we would have to have 5.5 in cap room for Nicks this season. If he does not hit his incentives, the extra money will carry over into next years cap. i'm not 100% sure on this, but this is the explanation he gave.

That's what makes the Pacers vs Heat all the more interesting to me. Pacers mostly built through the Draft (West the primary exception), and the Heat through big name free agency acquisitions. Pacers really should beat them this year. Would make me so happy! But we have to follow it by winning the championship, or it's a little meaningless.

Football (22 starters plus special teams) is different than basketball (5 starters. plus 1 or 2 solid players off the bench)

I would agree, but he included baseball in the statement, so it left it open to others. Really it mainly his statement only applies to football, with other few exceptions in other sports.

True they signed LeBron (who was the #1 pick in his class) but they drafted Wade, no?

Makes perfect sense. Avoids alot of possible chicanery issues that way...

The entire 06 Finals was a Wade free throw shooting contest.
