It is kind of hard to call Thornton a whiff and Holmes a non-call when one played and the other didn't crack a weak line-up. That may be just because Satele played most of the season. Still, even when Satele was hurt we didn't see Holmes. Thornton was more stout that Satele and McGlynn (not saying much there) against the rush when he got locked on to someone. Trouble is, he often whiffed on blocks because he wasn't prepared for inside moves and stunts. He did that a lot. Just saying that neither should give us much encouragement going into the season, but I think Thornton would be the better of the two if we had to have one. That's just a guess. I'm not sure we're developing o-line players very well, though, once we get them. Not too many have gone on to any success elsewhere, though, but I think a couple have. Experience, leadership, and chemistry would be nice on our o-line. We haven't seen that since our Superbowl year. |

I for one hated the 2013 draft, and still do. Hope I'm wrong. In a draft where most are calling it the best in recent memory, and where the team is 3 picks shy, Grigson and his staff need to make amens. |

This might be the most apt typo ever. I just picture Grigson in the draft room crossing himself furiously and praying that this next linemen he's taking actually works out. And I agree that if you count Davis as part of the 2013 draft class it helps it, since we basically got him with that second pick, but this thread was talking about this front office's ability to draft well(there are plenty of other threads talking about their ability to sign free agents). In that regard, Vontae doesn't really apply. I think my biggest concern is that it looks like to me like we tend to take a lot of risks with our draft picks and then go after safe workmen types in free agency. I'd rather use the draft to build a solid core of consistent contributors and augment that with the occasional difference maker signed in free agency. When the risky draft picks hit, it looks like genius. When they don't, all of the sudden your depth is completely gone. Edited by AustinColtsFan79, Mar 28 2014, 10:39 AM.

The fact that Pagano/Grigson had to transition the defense from 4-3 personnel to 3-4 types, may have made the process more difficult and time consuming. Landing Arthur Jones recently was a coup in the right direction. Nicks could be another boost for the offense. So Grigson may have reversed course a bit in that regard. I think we are also a bit spoiled by the immediate ascent from 2011's ashes.

They definitely changed their approach to free agency this year, which I liked for the most part. It will be interesting to see how/if the way they draft this year changes from the way they've done it the last couple years. The needs and dynamics of the team are different now, so hopefully the draft reflects that. |

Correct. Barring the unforeseen, I see Grigson taking the BA/S followed by the BA/G immediately on day 2...followed by the BA/PLAYERS in rounds 5-6. Team is apparently cautiously optimistic they have a hidden gem in Lance Louis...who was signed to a futures deal late last year. He was a starter for the Bears, but suffered a knee injury and may finally be healthy. Feeling is that he would provide quality depth at the least, if healthy. Davis is and is not a part of the 2013 Draft Class. On the one hand, as you point out, he cost a 2nd round pick. On the other hand, his salary is way, way above the Rookie scale. But if he stays focused, and does not get hurt, it is a very good trade/draft pick. |

Which is why it's justifiable to trade a draft pick for a proven commodity. Best part of the Davis deal, was his age. Mathis is getting a bit long in the tooth, hence my suggestion for offering a #5 pick, instead of a #3. |
