Good morning guys and gals, Like most of us, I was utterly on the floor after the selection of Mewhort in the 2nd round, with so many other big names on the board. That many of us, including myself pandered for and after during the mocks and workups to the big day. But after sleeping on it and having a real hearty breakfast. I felt it my duty to dig a bit deeper into the facts and try and understand the moves and position that Grigson has made and is in. 1st round selection 2014 pick# 26 - traded week 2 of the 2013 NFL season for Trent Richardson..When this happened most (not all) where onboard with this move, including yours truly. As of today, return for investment looks a bit slighted towards "we got screwed" category. As this draft has and had outstanding prospects at 26 (which turned into a trade chip for the Browns along with a 4th rounder to move up to 22 and select..IMO the POS Manziel) so now the discussion is. Will Trent Richardson be a more productive NFL player than Manziel (although the Colts would not have used that selection on him.) None the less, I personally feel that Trent was improperly utilized with the sieve that was the interior line of the Colts last season. I also believe that the young man, has something to prove and will come out this fall in beast mode and provide the Colts and all of us, with a solid season, thus allowing all of us to take a deep breath and relax. Manziel might be in a medically induced comma come week 10 this season, I believe the Browns (as usual) made a poor selection with this pick. 2nd round Pick # 59 - Jack Mewhort - COMBINE RESULTS 40 YD20 YD10 YD225 BENCHVERTICAL JUMP BROAD SHUTTLE3-CONE DRILL 5.37 3.02 1.89 28 26 8'5" 4.64 7.79 05/08/2014 - 2014 DRAFT SCOUT FINAL TOP 100: 62- Jack Mewhort, OT, Ohio State, 6-6, 309, 5.37, 2...Mewhort utilizes every inch of his tall, stout frame and large wingspan (80 1/4 inches) to engulf and control rushers. Versatile offensive line prospect who played at every spot except center, and projects as a right tackle. Mewhort looked strong during drills at the Senior Bowl. Lack of elite athleticism may dictate use at right guard. Frankly: Hard to go wrong with a guy who played four offensive line positions, started his final 39 consecutive games, was voted captain by his teammates and was hailed for his leadership by coach Urban Meyer. OK, Meyer's remark should be expected. PTI. - Frank Cooney, NFLDraftScout.com Most of us (fans) had no idea that Jack Mewhort existed until that fateful #59 pick sent out his name into history. Like me, most of you, were at home, bar possible at dinner with your loved one, anxiously scrambling through the draft sites trying to see whom the Colts drafted. And then it came, so many BIG names on the board that we all thought would certainly go and become a Colt. And then the letdown, the WTF is this, the Who the hell is Jack Mewhort, don't lie, you did it..I certainly did.. But my faithfulness to the Colts and my long standing position as a fan, all the way back to the Baltimore Colts days, was only temporally shaken. I know that Grigson has a plan, I know that he understands that we need versatility this year amongst the interior line, is it possible that this MEWHORT has this type of talent. So, I delved into the cyberspace that is our realm of understanding these days, and what I found was MEWHORT, was drafted about the right spot, not a sexy pick. But a guy that might push for an interior line position and at worst projects out to a RT, which he plays pretty darn well. 2 things stand out to me with this pick, 1: Jack has played 4 positions on the Ohio State O-line during his career (sounds like our new Linkenback, right). I believe this is something that was head and shoulders above any lineman on the draft board at that moment. According to most top 100 prospect he falls around 60 range, who knew, none of us, cause we weren't looking under that rock. That's when it hit me, again, all the mock drafting and NFL draft talk, StlColt you're not a scout or a GM. You go Grigson!!! 2: Jack Mewhort obviously is respected by his teammates at Ohio State being selected as their Captain, to me this shows a person not only talented but an individual that does the hard stuff, the nasty stuff, the stuff nobody talks about on TV, Radio shows, but guys in the trenches and behind see this. Being a 13 year Vet, this is the type of person, I want beside me, someone whom earns the respect of his / her peers. My opinion at first was the "you have to be sh!tting me" but now I'm like, PROTECT LUCK at all Costs. Solid pick at 59, nothing to be ashamed by it, although our prides might be stung as Grigson and the scouts have out down us again. Round 3 Pick #90 - Donte Moncrief - COMBINE RESULTS 40 YD20 YD10 YD225 BENCHVERTICAL JUMP BROADSHUTTLE3-CONE DRILL 4.34 2.511.54 13 39 1/2 11'0" 4.30 7.02 05/08/2014 - 2014 DRAFT SCOUT FINAL TOP 100: 57 - Donte Moncrief, WR, Mississippi, 6-2, 221, 4.34, 2...Moncrief is a big man with the footwork of a little guy, enabling him to maneuver his large body into a position where he can make the catch against quicker, faster defensive backs. His 156 catches, 2,371 receiving yards and 20 touchdowns are all third-best all-time in the Ole Miss record book. Frankly: Ready, willing and able to surprise cornerbacks with excellent route running that makes him more dangerous more often than receivers who rely mainly on speed. He will also do damage as a blocker in the running game. - Frank Cooney, NFLDraftScout.com So this pick is one that I have mocked many times, but of course during the ColtsThunder draft contest I leave him off. So my first thought was F'n A, nice job Grigs!!!! But then I was like, Damn, now I just lost the draft contest, I suck~~~~ But in all actuality this a great pick, Donte was ranked a a 2nd rounder by most pundits/mags, he did not hurt himself in anyway at the combine, just that his production dropped from 2 years ago. But the reasoning for that was his coverages doubled and his partner on the other side of the fields numbers went up. I don't feel that many of us are even talking about this pick, but is does serve a purpose. Our man Reggie, isn't getting any younger, who knows how the knee will respond (all accounts he is good to go) but we saw what transpired with Marvin? And Hakeem, who I feel is going to have a stellar season, is only signed to a 1 year contract. On the surface folks are againg thinking we don't need a WR, well I will play devil's advocate, 1: Moncrief isn't the 90 rated player in the country by anybody, so the value their at 90 was a no brainer. That aside he is our Megatron, you need big phsyical WR's to matchup with these big CB's now a days, we can't always have 5"10" guys weighing 180lbs. 2: read up on the guy, he is a monster in the run game with his blocking, something that we all know plays a big part in our run game. This might wind up being the best "bang for your buck pick" in the entire draft???? I appreciate the time reading, I hope that I have provided with some hindsight, laughs and most importantly some ray of hope. We are COLTS NATION... StlColt Edited by StlColt, May 10 2014, 11:05 AM.

Nice read. I for one, really like the Mewhort pick. I first noticed him at the Senior Bowl practices on the N.F.L. channel, where these players are scrutinized and put thru REAL Football drills, Not running around in shorts, at the combine. I then read about him on all the various sites and always had his name in my head as a player to watch in the draft. I actually had us taking him as late as yesterday, but changed it to Trai Turner, another fine prospect. I'm just gonna say this: Mewhort played at a Football factory and was a captain. The highest voted captain by his teammates. He was versatile, tough, smart and DURABLE. As noted, interestingly enough, he was ranked right at #59 by Mayock...a guy who does these sort of projections for a living. I like the Moncrief pick too, but he looks a bit stiff to me and needs refinement in his route running and hand catches. But he has a TON of physical gifts, and could develop into a star if he does the smart thing and follows Reggie around like a pup. |
