Should the Pacers tank?

Keep hearing this question from the national media. At least they're talking about us, but it sure is a silly discussion. Pacers didn't tank under Bird even after the brawl when it could be argued we should have. Most of the current team (or recent team) was comprised of later picks: George and Hibbert weren't top 10. Stephenson was a 2nd round longshot only because of his history of bad behavior. I don't expect the Pacers to do a lot this year, but I don't expect them to tank. Maybe the playing time will workout and make some of our bench players better.

In the NBA, the best way to get better is to tank and get a better draft pick. San Antonio tanked the year David Robinson was hurt, drafted Tim Duncan and lucked out on a few foreigners and won like 100 titles.

False, the best way to get better is to get lucky in free agency and sign Lebron or Shaq. Just look at who has won the championship since 2000. The Lakers, drafted Kobe at I think 13th, and signed Shaq, then traded for Pau. Detroit, traded for Wallace. Celtics, traded everything for 2 future all-stars. The Heat signed Shaq, and Lebron and Bosh, and weren't that good when it was only Wade. Dirk was drafted in 98, took a while for that to pan out. Really it is only the Spurs whose success is based on drafting high, and even then three of their best 3 players were drafted in the second half of the draft. The rest relied FA and trades. The Cavs have had four number one picks within a decade and have done essentially nothing. The Thunder with Durant and Westbrook haven't won the championship. This tanking to get better idea is a myth.

If you don't go into the tank and don't get to draft good, young talent, then who are you trading away?

Truthfully, it's about luck and being a good GM. Our current team was built with mid to late round draft picks and one really good FA signing. A top five talent is great in a great draft, but you don't get those every year. You can tank year after year and still suck.
