Is Shipley the #1 Center Now?

Holmes practiced quite a bit of the week with the #1's but was inactive for the Jags game so the decision makers must be comfortable with the job Shipley is doing.

I think they just didn't want to take a chance at re-injury, otherwise he'd be practicing with the 2's.

There was a Pro Football Focus reference to AQ grading out as the #9 center prior to the Jax game.

His rating might have improved.

Either way, the guy has been a quality addition.

Feel sorry for Holmes, but you can't take Shipley out right now. This is the best the Colts line has been in YEARS, you can't mess with it at this point. The pass blocking has been tremendous, and the run blocking has been pretty good too.

Amazing what addition by subtraction can do. Good riddance to Satele and McGlynn.

Who would have thought we would have this "issue" on the Colts? I think it is great that Holmes will need to play himself on to the starting OL. Now if we can develop the same problem at guard.
Shipley has earned everything so far.

Line has played better, but Shipley himself hasn't looked all that great. We still haven't seen Holmes really, so it's hard for me to say don't mess with it. At this point, we might need Shipley or Holmes to play guard before long.

He hasnt looked amazing but hes done well enough which is more than weve had lately. Hes rated pretty high so far this year as far as centers go.

I disagree that Shipley hasn't looked all that great. According to PFF he has yet to allow a single pressure in the pass game, and my eye test backs that up. Can't remember much pressure ever coming up the middle.

The run game I'm not as confident in how he has been, but honestly, I don't really care. The o-line has been great in pass protection, all 5 of them. That is all I really care about. If you can keep Luck upright, the run game is secondary.

Shipley has been more than fine. Thornton and Gosder have been the inconsistent links to date.

Hard to believe that. He and Bradshaw completely missed picking up a blitzing LB in the Denver game who sacked Luck. There is more to it than who lines up right in front of you.

Maybe, Bent. But he did pretty good picking up the inside blitz against Philly, I thought, and Jax as well.

I think that play mostly had to do with the limited amount of time Shipley had to practice with the team more than anything. It looked like two guys who weren't on the same page, which when you know one of the two hasn't had a lot of practice time it probably has less to do with ability and more to do with not having enough practice time together.

The denver sack he gave up seems like the only time ive seen him really give way to pressure. I have not seen it happen again since then.

Plus, ya, started days after he signed.

They say Shiply will start.
Feel for Holmes. Wonder if Holmes will be active for Titans or Harrison

Thornton is more of a liablity in picking up blitzes than Shipley is right now.

Yeah, Pagano made it sound like the job is now Shipley's to lose based on his play so far when he talked to the media yesterday. Sucks for Holmes to have lost his starting gig due to injury, but that's what happens when you get hurt every year before the season starts.

Is Holmes unable to play at guard? I'm all for him but T think he needs to "play his way on" right now. He is in his third season with bad luck from injuries so far.

This is only Holmes' second season, but yes his injury in the 1st preseason game was bad luck. I believe Shipley has the job unless his play slips or he gets hurt.

But as someone already pointed out, this is a good problem to have & one that I would not have believed before the season.

Keep Holmes healthy and on the bench. Let it be known that at any time he can and will come in for either of our guards and/or Shipley. Keep the starters on their toes and fighting for their jobs.

Makes you wonder what they were looking at last year when we had Shipley and continued to start Satele.

Is Holmes now big enough to play guard? I know there was concern about his size and inexperience, and that's what kept him from playing center right away.

They were probably trying to figure out how they were going to start a Raven in a Colts game. :-P

Shipley has been fine, aside from game 1. But who could expect anything differently since he was signed roughly 3 or 4 days before the game? Holmes should be fine, but i see nothing wrong in letting him rest and get healthier for whenever players start getting fatigued or injured.

I did not understand it last year. I thought the offensive line played much better with Ship in at center instead of Satele. I really like him and am glad to have him back. I think he will be a top ten center in another year or two.

Shipley played in Baltimore last season, guys. Probably why he didn't see much time at center for us.
