I wonder why colts extended his contract now?
Glad they signed him for another year, thru. 2016
I wonder if Gris has got something up his sleeve?
We had cap space.

They also are going to pay him for this season even though they don't have to due to him being placed on IR non-football related. Nice gesture IMO for someone who leaves it all on the field every game and has never been anything but a positive infuence.

I'm a Mathis fan and no way want to put him down. I also will never question his effort.
He is 33 years old and lots of hard knocks in his NFL career. What should we expect from him next year? He certainly had a great 2013.

One thing I read about Mathis contract is that in addition to the extension, the team agreed to pay his contract for this season even though they don't have to and a roster bonus in his contract for next year was converted to a game by game roster bonus which allows the team to not be obligated so early to the full roster bonus if there os still some question on his health when the time comes that it would have to be paid. I know it's not nearly as much and the situation is different than Mannings when he was coming back, but imagine if there was no Andrew Luck available at the time a decision had to be made on Peyton's bonus and the team could commit to it on a game by game basis and not be on the hook for the full amount if he couldn't play again. Something like that could make a difference in releasing a player or not due to a roster bonus.

This is only Houston's 4th year in the league and he has gotten better every year and has not missed a game (I think). I do not see any way that the Chiefs let him walk unless they just can't come to terms. He would be a huge price tag but would make our D put pressure on the QB every single snap. I think if we had Mathis this year or a Houston our defense would really be a force to be reckoned with.

Chiefs are probably using the franchise tag on Houston this offseason.

Houston's potential replacement was drafted in April, when they drafted Dee Ford. Not sure tagging him is a slam dunk.
