Colts not a legit SB contender

Well, if there was some doubt before tonight's game I think the Pats domination proves the Colts simply are not a legitimate Super Bowl contender. This loss was disgusting frankly. Will the Colts ever get a really good defense...they never had one with Manning and certainly don't have one with Luck so far.

The offensive and defensive lines got absolutely dominated and at home no less. No way you can take anything good from this game except maybe Fleener's play which was totally wasted.

29 yards rushing is mind boggling but how about the run defense. And the OL line can't pass or run block.

Colts will have a battle to beat out Houston for the division if Mallett keeps playing like he did against the Browns.

The Colts should beat Jacksonville and hopefully beat Washington. Because the Colts are in the weakest division in the AFC they should be able to go 10-6 which may make the playoffs in the AFC.

Our ILB's are absolutely PATHETIC. I've said it for the longest now, and this game wrests squarely on their shoulders. Chapman has mode ONE play in 3 years. I kept having visions of Cato June all night.

Freeman has to go. Yes, made some nice plays early in his career, but they just masked how weak he is. Gets swallowed up so easily. Jackson brings leadership and attitude, but he's not very good either.

You can't have undersized ILB's in a 3-4 defense. Plus, thay can't even cover.

IronPony...sometimes the truth hurts. Forums aren't just for positive posts of those drinking the blue koolaid.

I still think the Colts can make the playoffs but won't go very far because they definitely have serious problems which even you have to admit.

And injuries are starting to really emerge.
Allen and Bradshaw in locker room with boots on...

Which is perfectly fine if you were anywhere to be found when we played well.

You posted this exact thread after the last loss and then disappeared. No where to be found after a win or the bye, then showed back up when we lost again.

The Colts do have problems, but showing up only when the team didnt play well to tell us they didnt play well....

Not surprised about Bradshaw. It's been a surprise he's lasted this late into the season.

My bigger concern is that Allen might be injury prone.

Can we run the ball? No
Can we stop the run? No
Level playing field on defensive holding/pass interference/illegal contact? No

It was disaster from the first drive on. We were fortunate on Brady's two interceptions, but those three things doomed us from the beginning.

I would really like a good defense sometime. What others have said is true, our inside lb's are weak.

Remember when we shut out the Bengals and we had a dominant defense that would be a force to be reckoned with? Or when we decided we had finally gotten over the hump running the ball? Or how the offensive line was finally fixed? We weren't as good at some of those things as we thought we were then, and we aren't as bad at them as some folks around here seem to think we are now. Who you are playing week to week matters.

Did any of you really think that if you gave our coaching staff 2 weeks to prepare and ALSO gave Belichick and his staff 2 weeks to prepare that our staff was going to be the one that came up with the better game plan? It's obvious to me now, in retrospect, that we were already down before our team ran out of the tunnel last night. We all knew that the Colts are week against tight ends and running backs out of the backfield, so clearly the Pats are going to give us a steady dose of that, right? Nope, the Pats ran 37 plays out of formations with 6 offensive lineman last night. We had seen 8 total going into the game and those were mostly in goal line/short yardage situations. We have been good against the run this year, and that is mostly by manning up outside and bringing extra help into the box. The Pats had 6 offensive linemen and Gronk(who is might as well be number 7) and they trotted out a back who is big and strong and runs straight. We decided we weren't going to let them beat us through the air and respected their strong passing game. They then ran it down our throats, because our small MLBs and safety help weren't going to beat their extra tackle/huge TE blocking fronts. This also let them control the clock and keep our offense off the field(they had a 35 to 25 ToP advantage).

On defense they put their worst corner on TY and gave him constant bracket help over the top. Then they manned up everyone else and commited to stopping us from running the ball and dared those other guys to win one on one. Our only guy who won consistently was Fleener, who was uncoverable last night(I also loved the fire he played with last night btw. I thought he was the only guy on our team who had the appropriate level of intensity for this kind of game). Also for everyone clamoring to get Allen more involved in the passing game, I would like to point to last nights game as a partial description of what happens when Allen isn't helping in the run game.

We got out schemed and we lost a lot of the individual battles last night. We were also playing the team that is the consensus best team in the AFC. This doesn't mean our season is over and we should all just go home. It means we aren't there yet and didn't match up well last night. There's no guarantee that we see them in the post-season. Another team that matches up better with them could knock them out before we get to them. And it might turn out that that team matches up poorly with us.

I don't think the super bowl is ours to lose, but constantly saying we aren't a contender is ridiculous. We're still one of the 6 best teams in the AFC and at the end of the year if we get hot we've got a shot. Not to mention that having Arthur Jones changes our run defense. And having Dwayne Allen the whole game changes our offense. And now we've got what they did last night on film.

Our oline is still mediocre. Our defense is still soft through the middle. Those things got exposed last night, but they aren't things we didn't all already know. Something else to think about is the plays we didn't make. What if Bradshaw catches that ball running down the sideline? What if Luck doesn't miss Moncrief on that long ball where he was wide open? We left a lot of plays on the field last night. There is a lot of season left. We got our asses kicked, but it's way too soon to think we're done.

Their "scheme" was physicality. No wrinkles or gadget plays. If we stop the run like we have for the most part this year, it's a different game. It's easy to "outcoach" a team when you have the talent that provide the answers.

IronPony - the reason I don't post anything after wins is because there are a lot of other posters who do all the postings about positive things so me adding anything about the "good games" isn't really needed or relevant. Don't take offense really about what I'm going to say because I don't really have a problem with you or any other poster on this forum - but I don't need to make 2000+ posts to prove that I am a real Colts fan.

There isn't anything wrong with posting thousands of times as you do just like there isn't really anything wrong with someone who only posts a few times a month.

You commented that I didn't make a post after the Colts Giants win...so what. I'm imagine you did to show that you believed the Colts were still a legit SB contender after that game.

Frankly I believe a lot of Colts fans have an inflated view of how good the Colts are every year whether or not the circumstances reflect that is true. I tend to be a realist - some of the positive posters don't like to hear the criticisms of the team and label those who point them out as being negative.

I tend to post after bad Colts losses because they are so frustrating. Hopefully, the Colts will make the playoffs and make a surprising playoff run.

We have Luck, but not enough talent around him to be considered a viable SB just yet. Losing Mathis really hurt too.
