Not advocating this move, just wanting a temperature check from you all on this question.

Moncrief is a 3 at the moment for me. When playoff time comes, I want the guy who's been there. I have more confidence that he'll be in the right place, that the moment won't be too big for him, that the game won't be going to fast for him, etc. Plus Reggie may not be getting as much separation as he used to, but he still has great hands. I think next year is when you make this move, once Moncrief has a year of the offense under his belt and where he has a whole season to build game experience going into the playoffs.

You mean like the play where Reggie allowed Porter to step in front of him to end our Colts chances at another superbowl win?

Reggie is struggling IMO. Twice in the last few games we had to toss him some screen passes late in the game to keep his consecutive games with 3 plus catches alive. I'm not sure Moncrief is ready for the #2 spot, but Reggie is definitely not what he used to be.

Reggie for now, but if Luck keeps having to wait more than three seconds for guys to get open then changes need to be made. All of the complaints about the O-line but some of that pressure yesterday came when when Luck had to stand back there waiting on someone to get open.

Forget benching Reggie, why is Nicks still getting time? There's no way Nicks should be getting time ahead of Moncrief.

Start with Nicks then we can talk about Reggie. One step at a time.

I'm a big Wayne fan and in no way do I want him to see him get embarrassed....but he is only getting open when the opposition is in zone or his covering DB gets rubbed off on a near pick. Sunday, he was open for a sure TD but Luck missed him. The D lost him somehow. Running in sand is pretty close to what it looks like. He needs to be the slot guy exclusively and in motion most of the time. He still has those hands and is probably the best bet to catch the short one for a first down...but a deep threat he is not. This will be his last season. I am wanting him to end his career with a few really good games....but, it is not gonna be very easy.

Reggie is having some down games, but I dont think hes lost reliability.

The weak link is and will continue to be Nicks.

Its just like Marvin Harrison and Jerry Rice at the end of their careers. Its sad to see Hall of Fame players who can no longer get any separation from DBs.

Reggie still brings things to the table, his hands, his awareness, his leadership, and he can still find ways to get open occasionally, he just can't straight up beat his man anymore. He still deserves to start, but his career is winding down.

I think Sunday proved Moncrief is already moving ahead of Nicks on the depth chart (by next season he should be our no. 2, and given what's happened with our depth this year, we need to find a new no. 3 and possibly no. 4):

Donte Moncrief played on 30 snaps in Sunday's win over the Jaguars, two more than Hakeem Nicks.

Hakeem Nicks was first man up in three-wide sets, but Moncrief ate into that playing time as the game continued. Moncrief drew four targets to Nicks' one. Hopefully the Colts realize how Moncrief is lightyears better than Nicks and up his snaps over the final month of the season.

As for Reggie:

The Indianapolis Star says "it's becoming more and more apparent that (Reggie Wayne) has lost a step."

Wayne was not good against the Jags on Sunday, catching 3-of-9 targets for 10 yards and failing to separate. It's what we'd expect out of a 36-year-old wideout one year removed from blowing out his knee. Wayne isn't going anywhere as a solid possession receiver and security blanket for Andrew Luck, but he's capped at the WR3 level. He's averaging just 4.0 catches for 44.2 yards with one touchdown over the last five weeks.

I honestly don't think Reggie was fully healed when he started the season. He might never fully heal, but a full off-season without the physical therapy and rehab, just rest, could give him one more season. And probably a better one than he's had this year. Moncrief would, probably easily, be the #2 by then, but Wayne would still be valuable as our #3, or even our #4. Just don't count him out yet.

As of now, continue to rotate. Give Reggie a break here and there. Give Nicks a chance to earn a contract next year. And give Moncrief some experience.

I choose neither.

It should not & need not be Reggie or Moncrief. It should be Moncrief over Nicks and should have been long ago. Nicks is nothing more than a poor mans version of Reggie. Neither of them are capable of creating much separation against man coverage, but both have good/great hands.

Moncrief actually poses another deep threat opposite Hilton, and he is the future & needs the reps to develop. It is frustrating when a coaching staff is so slow in recognizing &/or acting on such things. It reminds me of last here when they insisted on starting DHB in front of Hilton.

The real dilemma regarding Reggie is what will the Colts do with him after this season? His contract is up & there is a good chance he will not be ready to call it a career. Most players, especially ones of Reggies caliber, tend to hang on just a little to long. The Colts, the fans & Pagano have a deep rooted loyalty for Reggie.

I want to call this out again to make sure everyone sees it:

Donte Moncrief played on 30 snaps in Sunday's win over the Jaguars, two more than Hakeem Nicks.

I think Moncrief is going to be a great all around WR. A guy who can go deep, but can also play a possession role. He's already done a little bit of everything this year. Just has to keep working and learning.

Yes, Moncrief got 30 snaps vs 28 for Nicks against the Jags, but as recent as the Patriots game Nicks had 38 snaps to Moncriefs 16 (according to the link you posted in the other thread). And Nicks has approximately 100 more snaps on the season than Moncrief. Thus my comment about the coaches not recognizing &/or being slow to act regarding such things.

Yes, going by the most recent game though. I don't think this was about garbage time either because Moncrief saw some action early and Nicks was still in there late in the game. I think they're at the very least going to get equal playing time going forward.

Not only this, but I don't think that he is fully healed from his elbow injury in the Cincy game, either.

Nope. If anything today just proved that Nicks needs to sit. With TY, Moncrief, Wayne, Allen and Fleener there should never be a situation where Nicks sees the field. Wayne had his worst game of his career today, rather than take a Hall of Fame player who has played more games in this uniform than any other human being dead or alive and say we should throw him out like garbage in favor of a younger guy, I say we give him a chance to go out with his head held high. With Moncrief as the #3 he should get plenty of snaps.

This is the problem. I don't care what the guy has done in the past. If he can't go out there and get it done week in and week out, he needs to be replaced. Now you can argue if we have or don't have someone on this roster that could go out and be more productive for us, but to say that he deserves to continue to go out there and drop balls and look old and useless because he used to be good is just dumb. And dangerous.

Nicks hasn't earned a roster spot. Time to bench him, and not Reggie, even after today's performance.

Fleenor is the only receiver I saw running consistently hard routes with sharp cuts to get open. Most of our receivers, even T.Y. to some extent, tend to round off routes and struggle to get open against man coverage. Something they need to work on.

I just cant imagine Reggie keeping this up. Hes never been known for drops ever.

The last few weeks have been ridiculous in that regard.

His hands didnt suddenly just become bad though.

They didn't? Have you seen any game since Cincinnati?

Oh come now, you know the answer to that question.

Older receivers lose their athletic ability well before they lose hand-eye coordination. The ability to catch a football isnt there one game and then completely gone the rest of the way like it has been. Hes clearly affected by what ails him.

Be critical of Reggie all you wish, it doesnt bother me. He should be nursing his injury, if thats what the problem is, and not killing drives on the field. Im just telling you his hands didnt just turn to stone all by themselves because hes older.

There are a few things wrong with Reggie right now:
1) he's 36 & has lost a step
2) he's only one year removed from major knee surgery
3) he is injured - elbow & apparently a previously undisclosed torn triceps

The Colts need to let him get healthy. His possession receiver skills would come in very handy come playoff time if he can get healthy.

If Reggie isn't healthy, which seems to be the case, he needs to sit and get healthy cause it is obviously affecting his ability to perform on the field.
