Hope this doesn't mean Simon told him he wasn't willing to spend money to make the team better. Bird's moves over the last half decade certainly paid off this year. http://www.indystar.com/article/20120626/SPORTS04/120625056/Larry-Bird?odyssey=mod|defcon|img|IndyStar.com |

Can't tell if I am more upset about losing Bird or gaining Walsh. Been down that road; not excited. Pritchard, though, IS something to be excited about. |

Pritchard is the wildcard. It's going to be interesting to see what he does with the makeup of this team going forward. Really interesting. |

Agree on Walsh. He had a good run but left the franchise a mess which Bird has done a good job rebuilding. We'll miss Larry. |

He really didn't have all that great of a run. The 90s were more coaching than anything. |

I'm a little less excited about Pritchard after tonight's hedge scratcher of a draft pick. Miles Plumlee, some mediocre scrub from Duke. There were some good players left, too. |

That was Bird's pick. In his news conference he explicitly stated that he was going to be sticking around for the draft. Which is a little odd, and has fueled the speculation that he's only going to be gone for a year. The Plumlee pick was meh. It's #26; it was going to be meh regardless. |

With Hibbert possibly moving to Portland, maybe they were hedging their bets a bit with the Plumlee pick. He ain't much, but has to be better than no center at all. Is Hibbert worth a max deal? He should have dominated inside against Orlando and Miami. He had his moments, but he didn't take advantage of Orlando or Miami without their starting big men. |

Well, Hibbert isn't getting a MAX deal. He's getting the most another team could give him, but the real max deal is ~$20m more. But if you look at it like a max deal, and just say, "Is Hibbert worth a max deal?", the answer is obviously no. But he's worth $12m and is getting 14-15 from Portland. So the real question isn't "Is Hibbert worth a max deal?", it's "Is keeping Hibbert worth dishing out 2-3m more a season?". The answer to that question is a definitive YES. IMO, there is no way the Pacers can afford not to match. It would have been nice to sign him for less (and technically we still could, if he decides to not sign the Portland deal and sign for us to shave a little off the cap, though I highly doubt that will happen), but shelling out a few extra bills isn't going to kill the team. |

But if the Pacers re-sign Hibbert for that kind of money they suddenly lose all that cap space they had and their ability to re-sign guys like West and George, assuming they're both worth the money when the time comes. I worry about Hibbert. I hate to lose him, but I also hate to tie up that much money in a player who seems to have reached his max potential, and that just isn't worth that kind of money, to be honest. As for Plumlee, he's a bencher at best. That's why the Pacers are looking at other centers right now. |

Like I said, though, it's only 2-3 million a year more than the offer that they've already given him. You are looking at it as total cost, but if you look at that 11m as sunk cost, it looks a lot better. :) I do agree, though, that A) he's not worth that much, and B) he's never going to reach the level where is IS worth that much. But the way the NBA is structured, you gotta match this, because nobody else out there is going to be had, either. It's not like Indiana is going to be able to pull down Dwight Howard, or anyone better than Hibbert, especially without doing a sign and trade that depletes your roster down to the bone. Also, with the way the NBA does its salary cap, the Pacers can still spend to the cap (~20m, I think), and THEN resign Hibbert and Hill. Same goes next year if they want/can resign West. As long as they stay away from the tax cap (which I'm not sure how far above the soft cap that limit is), they'll be ok. |

I think you'll be disappointed. A friend of mine is a die hard Blazer fan and works in production at ESPN. She has met him several times and can't stand the guy. She single-handedly credits him for destroying the Blazers when he was still in charge there. |

Injuries destroyed the Blazers, not Pritchard. |
