Current Estimated Cap Room: $43 Million

Biggest Colts' 2013 Unsigned Free Agents:

  • Austin Collie
  • Jerraud Powers

Top NFL 2013 Unsigned Free Agents:

http://nfltraderumors.co/nfltr-features2013-nfl-free-agents/

Quote:

1. Ryan Clady
2. Jairus Byrd
3. Victor Cruz (Restricted)
4. Andre Smith
5. Dwayne Bowe
6. Henry Melton
7. Greg Jennings
8. Wes Welker
9. Andy Levitre
10. Joe Flacco

Some of these guys are bound to get franchised (Clady, Smith, and Flacco for sure).
Big year for wide receivers. If we could land Bowe or Jennings, that would be monstrous.

EDIT: Just throwing this into the first post after I combined the topics. -IC45

Yea, I mentioned a few days ago I thought Reed might be a possibility. I just dont think the Ravens can afford to keep him.

He is still a very good safety. The issues I have with him though are his health, his age and his free lance mentality. He will play out of position on a hunch or to try and bait a QB. Sometimes it works but some times the corner gets left with no over the top protection that he was expecting and, boom, big play down field.

Even at his age, he would still be an upgrade over our current safties.

I'd like to see a safety signed to upgrade and add depth. Byrd and Goldson may be overpriced, but that still leaves Laron Landry, Louis Delmas and Patrick Chung. In case we dont draft a good one.
If Chicago DT Henry Melton would be interested in playing DE in our 3-4, that might work really well. KRuger would be great, Levitre would be a major upgrade at OG, even if he isnt great. I could see Rashard Mendenhall being brought in for depth.
If we wanted to go for the long-term, big time investment at safety, I'd want Byrd. Wanted him ever since he came out of college. But it would cost a lot. Reed would just be short-term, and because of that he'd have the least risk. Wouldn't be the same kind of investment.

Not a big fan of any of the other safeties you mentioned. Wouldn't even consider Melton. But the other guys? Hell yeah. We'd have to invest a lot to get Kruger and/or Levitre. But Mendenhall could be had for cheap, and at least give us 1 solid year, IMO. Someone will probably over pay for him, though.

I'd like to see us make an offer to LaGarrett Blount RFA TB.If we can't get him this year get a 1 year guy and stick with Brown as 3rd down back.

BUt Reed has been debating retiring for the last 3 yrs or so. Does he want to mnove to a new city? And at this stage, do you want to make that move? His play is not the same. He is not the player he was even 3 years ago.

He made a statement within the past two weeks that he is not going to retire. That being the case, he will have to move somewhere because I really don't believe the Ravens are going to bring him back unless Reed is willing to take a significant pay cut. So if he plays for someone other than the Ravens next season, the Colts or the Jets seem to be logical choices

I don't want to pay him like he was the same player as 3 years ago, but I'd like to have him on the team.

Im with you IC45 - Im a huge Ed Reed fan. I don't know if he can be bought for a reasonable amount, but if so, Im all for it. It would be like having another "almost" player coach in the fold, similar to Wayne, just one for the DBs now.

Elam would be an interesting pick, but at #1 with a team that needs OL & DL help, I'm not so sure.

As far as Reed goes, he appears to have much love for Chuck, so maybe...

Love to sign Vollmer the tackle from Pats
Upshaw and Kruger. Think Byrd will be franchise by Bills. So let sign Reed
Get 2 decent guards in draft or in FA. Do we need a center.

Satele and Shipley are adequate at center. We need some road grading guards and a quality Tackle. If the line could give Luck another 1.5 seconds per drop back and push the pile on short yardage, offensively, I think we would be in great shape. We could use a dependable WR for third down conversions other than Reggie and some depth at RB. Not sure Grigson can do all that and address the defense this off season. Should be interesting though.

I could see Rashard Mendenhall being brought in for depth.
On a related note, I was just browsing around on the 'net this morning and saw mention of the Colts possibly making a play for Steelers' RFA running back Isaac Redman if Arians stays:
Link

"Redman, a restricted free agent this offseason, likely wouldn't even be in the league right now if not for Arians, who watched tape of the Bowie State product at the urging of Redman's uncle Todd McNair, who once played for Arians when both were at Temple. Arians look at Redman resulted in him being signed by the Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2009 and the rest is history.

The Steelers are expected to restricted tender Redman at the lowest level this offseason which will likely wind up being in the neighborhood of $1.32 million. Other teams, if they feel so inclined, will then be able to sign Redman to offer sheet once the free agency signing period begins, but the Steelers would hold the right to match whatever offer Redman gets should that indeed happen.

Generally restricted tendered free agents aren't pursued by other teams because normally they are former draft picks that would cost the team attempting to sign them away an original round draft pick as compensation in addition to the contract. Being as Redman was an undrafted free agent, however, there wouldn't be any draft pick compensation involved."

I don't know if the Colts are even looking at bringing in another RB, but I thought this was interesting since the Steelers are up against the cap and it might not take a whole lot to outbid them if a team wanted to.

They'd better be looking at RB depth.

Speaking of Free Agency, there's an article in the Indy Star with some revealing comments from Grigson:
Link

“I feel like I don’t want to go after a name just because that’s easy. There are guys out there — if you really scout this league, if you really know this league — you can find guys under the radar just because we dig a little harder. I feel confident we can sign some guys that might not be household names but will fit real well here despite not being splash names.

“If there’s someone that is an absolute game wrecker at a position and I feel like I absolutely have to have him — and if the staff feels like they have to have him — we’ll do it. But it’s not in my DNA to just go after names because sometimes, those guys let off the gas when they get those huge contracts. That’s just human nature.’

Im not big on Mike Wallace. He has INSANE speed and could blow the top off defenses but if were complaining about drops this year, like we have been, next year it would be just as bad with Wallace. And he bitches when he doesnt get the ball. I hate that more than anything.

I would freaking LOVE Ed Reed though. Even if he isnt the same player, he is still a badass.

And Grigson sounds more and more like the one of the most logical execs ive ever heard of. So glad to have him.

Good stuff, DHC. You could even say Redman is one of those "under the radar" guys Grigs could go after.

Honestly, though, the Steelers probably want him back if Mendenhall is gone, and will probably put that 2nd round tender on him. Plus, I don't think teams go after and/or get RFA's very often. Not saying we wont, just saying it doesn't happen a lot.

And Grigs is gonna HAVE TO spend some of that money with that whole cap spending minimum thing. He could even be bluffing a little, hoping more teams let their FA's test the market. He wants as many players available as possible. Even O-linemen.....

One thing is for sure though, this free agency thing is gonna be fun. Big names or not. It's definitely something different and pretty cool.

Sounds like we're in the running to sign Armond Armstead:

http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2013/1/13/3872250/nfl-free-agency-2013-armond-armstead-patriots-eagles-colts

Armstead was a standout at USC in his first three seasons. He spent most of his junior year at defensive end, recording 43 tackles, six of which were for a loss (three sacks). He was set to start at defensive tackle in 2011, but his career was derailed by a heart attack before spring practice. Armstead was never medically cleared to play his senior season and then went undrafted during the 2012 NFL Draft.

They're talking about Toradol on Outside The Lines on ESPN... same painkiller injections Armstead blames for his heart attack.

Toradol isn't technically a painkiller. It's basically ibuprofen, just a lot stronger and it's injected straight into the bloodstream..

That shit works though I can tell you that much.

Here is a break down of the free agent linemen the Colts could go after. It's from Eric Ivie, the same guy who wrote the article above. He seems to know his stuff as it relates to the Colts.

Keep loving Kruger more by the week.

Greg Jennings put his house on the market and has allegedly been told by the Packers they won't be pursuing him. Reggie Bush also is allegedly not going to be resigned by the Dolphins. These are both guys I could see being on Grigson's radar as possibilities, even if not entirely likely.

It looks like the Giants are going to let Osi Umenyiora walk, which makes Freeney by most accounts at best the number 3 FA DE on the market, behind Cliff Avril and Osi. It'll be interesting to see what kind of contract he gets.
Patriots might be the front runner for Ed Reed?

Boldin has come out and said he'll retire if the Ravens cut him. Says he won't play for another team. Guess we can cross him off the list.

Also saw some interesting analysis on Kruger today.

Quote:

Free agent OLB Paul Kruger amassed just 1.5 sacks in six games ahead of Terrell Suggs' 2012 return from Achilles' surgery, before closing out the season with 7.5 sacks across the final eight games with Suggs in the lineup.

Kruger also had 4.5 sacks in Baltimore's four playoff wins, all with Suggs aligned opposite him. It's worth debating whether Kruger's production was at least partially a product of Suggs commanding increased defensive attention. We fully expect 26-year-old Kruger to command a massive free-agent deal, but the sack statistics suggest he's more of a complementary than franchise pass rusher.

Excellent analysis. I realize that I've been pushing hard for signing him, but I wouldn't go bonkers in the process. He had Suggs in Baltimore, but would have Mathis in Indy. So...

Freeney saying all the right things...
He didn't say he'd play for free in there, did he?

Someone will pay him decent coin to play in a 4-3, and no one should/would blame him at all for taking it.

We can sign him to a one day contract, so he can retire with us, once the gas is out of his tank... Otherwise, he should go somewhere and try to pad his stats, get in the top ten for all-time sacks and make a push for the HOF...
