Manti Te'o did lose his grandmother this past fall. Annette Santiago died on Sept. 11, 2012, at the age of 72, according to Social Security Administration records in Nexis. But there is no SSA record there of the death of Lennay Marie Kekua, that day or any other. Her passing, recounted so many times in the national media, produces no obituary or funeral announcement in Nexis, and no mention in the Stanford student newspaper.

Nor is there any report of a severe auto accident involving a Lennay Kekua. Background checks turn up nothing. The Stanford registrar's office has no record that a Lennay Kekua ever enrolled. There is no record of her birth in the news. Outside of a few Twitter and Instagram accounts, there's no online evidence that Lennay Kekua ever existed.

I do not even know what to say about this. I have never in my life heard about a story as bizarre as this. As a member of the clergy, I am embarrassed and saddened that a pastor had a role in this hoax.

I am really confused how Te'o can call her his girlfriend yet not meet her. I thought they supposedly met after a game a few years ago and were in Hawaii together. I am really confused with all the stories that are coming out about this.

Just an odd, sad and humiliating story.

This is too bizarre, but wait till Lance Armstrong opens up his mouth tonight.

Seems you really can't believe anyone anymore.

I'm surprised by how much attention this story is getting on social media sites. I've seen more people talking about this than I have Armstrong's confession, Mali, a proposed weapons ban and the alleged Sandy Hook conspiracy all combined.

There is no way a top 10 pick in the upcoming draft has a gf that he never met. I believe he was in on it. Getting extra sympathy votes for the heisman.

All I know is that 2013 has been rocky for manti. His stock after the national championship game fell hard enough, if it turns out he knew about this, he may fall out of the first round.

This is a bizarre story to say the last. But I don't believe T'eo one bit

If you are a GM and pass on this guy because of this, that's just plumb dumb.

Pass on him because of the NC game, pass on him if he has a poor combine, but don't pass on him because of this.

I can't imagine he did it for the Heisman though. He wasn't even a serious contender until very late in the season.

Let's pretend for a minute that he knew about this. The reasons I would pass is because:
1) the NC game as mentioned
2) the MLB position I'd slowly becoming extinct
3) he may have mental instability

I wouldn't take him for reasons in that order. We don't know anything yet, so I'll try to reserve judgement. He strikes me as a similar player to Aaron Curry, with similar bust potential. I'm sure I'll get flack for saying so. but is just a simple prediction.

I'm going to propose a conspiracy. T'eo really did have a girlfriend who died of cancer, but Livestrong convinced him the best way to help fight cancer was to come up with some screwball story about her not being real to serve as a diversion for Lance Armstrong.
